  1. It is not a good assumption that Modems work over VOIP. It really depends on who your provider is and what codecs they are using. I've heard people claim to have good luck with Verizon's Fios, but everything from mid-range to horror stories on others. I experimented with MagicJack once and could barely get 1200 baud, not completely stable, with one BBS. If you can't find someone with your provider in your area that has tried it and can tell you how it went, you're really just going to have to try it yourself and see how the results go. This may have worked fine for Russ with his provider in his area, but YMWV.
  2. Eh, we can always kick people out for not doing their homework. Of course, we'd have to call it "expulsion" in that case.
  3. Really would h ave loved to have seen one of those RatSoftXE BBS's
  4. Figures... tried to get in touch with him for years while I was running RatSoft. Barely two months after it goes down, he shows up. I had been hoping that the source code would come up, but he had said that something had happened with some water damage or something (or so I was told, I never was in contact with him directly). If I could find another Mega STE or get one of the two dead ones here working, I'd put it back up, but alas.... That said, this really should be in the discussion section, Resources was meant to be more read only and my intention was to delete messages here when the main post was updated with the links (which I haven't managed to do yet).
  5. I had Fidonet/AtariNet/NeST/RPGNet/etc. archives from back in the 90's... I just wish I had archived more than the last 250-500 messages... Especially the AtariNet and NeST..... Might get around to making it downloadable in an archive someday..... someday......
  6. Yeah, I guess it's about time I watched it too...... We should all watch it and write a one page book report.
  7. Thank you for all your great work... and especially for this. Hope we weren't too much trouble, Was this a site wide thing, or were we just an unlucky group?
  8. It's a shame you gave up running it on the Atari. You might find many (or most) of us aren't really nostalgic about PC BBS's so I wish you the best, but hope you don't get too discouraged if things don't take off quickly. Then again.... nothing "takes off quickly" in this hobby.
  9. Yeah John... I already got with him on this. So we'll see how it goes.
  10. I know that, but if I understood what he said, he didn't get any with his default install whereas I got tons.

This was an image of me calling DarkForce on monitor 1, while someone was calling SFHQ that I was monitoring on monitor 2. This was back in the day before the retro revolution, before retro BBSing was cool and one could go weeks or even months without a call to the BBS, so this was truly an interesting event.
  15. I really hope you enjoy it. Sometimes, there is nothing like just old-schooling it.
  16. Actually, I'm surprised.... When I downloaded SyncTerm, the dialing menu had tons of entries... All IBM machines of course, and half of them basically dead. Regarding the "insert" key on the MacBook Pro keyboard, try this link... Page I found googling it. The BBS community tends to be more civil than in the past. Then again, there aren't that many. File transfer is kind of an interesting topic. BBS's that are old systems from "back in the day" tend to have more files. Ones that are "newer" tend not to bother as things are easy to get on the internet and not hard to get it back onto disks or "disk emulators". Even games don't seem to be all that popular (something I hope we can change with better awareness). That said, it really is a die-hard close knit community, and every extra person makes a huge difference.
  17. Probably because they're on their way and any hope you ever had for running for political office is now gone.
  18. Just out of curiosity... Is this your setup? (Didn't know you were running a BBS too.... let us know and we'll get it on the list)..... Or are you just familiar with Kyle's setup? Sorry, just a little confused.
  19. The real question is what BBS are you calling? Generally the "MORE" prompt comes from the BBS, not your software. The main thing to consider is are your column and line settings right? If you're using 40 col with 20 some lines, but on the BBS you're set to 80col.... it's going to give you twice as much as you can see (give or take). Maybe it's something the SysOp of the specific BBS can help with.
  20. Ah...ok.... I had heard awhile ago it was on a todo list but wasn't sure if anyone had worked on it since.
  21. Well, what I really find funny is that you dev on the REAL hardware, but then USE it in emulation.
