Hello all: I am now running a telnet BBS on my old PC, gave up on running it under the Mega ST4, the advantage is that I am running Renegade 1.20, and my telnet address is 99.250.141.63 : port 23 I think, also have dialup under 1-226-647-0710. I am using a PC because I can run 500 GB , and I already have an Atari ST section, an Atari 8 Bit section, and an Atari Portfolio section, and max logon speed is 118,000 Baud (somewhere around there).    Renegade supports doors, I have 9 doors running so you can relive those door games days, or the uploading ands downloading days. My BBS is named Spy Visits Spy BBS, and I am The Master Spy. Hopefully I will be able to put Atari graphics online , I have the source, and it is written in Pascal, so I may modify it to suite my purposes. Russ

It's a shame you gave up running it on the Atari.  You might find many (or most) of us aren't really nostalgic about PC BBS's so I wish you the best, but hope you don't get too discouraged if things don't take off quickly.  Then again.... nothing "takes off quickly" in this hobby. ;)

This is definitely broken and something I need to work on fixing. Don't know what's going on there.

      ..Al

Yeah John... I already got with him on this.  So we'll see how it goes.

Tillek you can wipe those entries out. It is in the content directory for Syncterm appdata>roaming>SyncTerm>syncterm.lst   - wipe it or edit it.. and you have the list you want.

I know that, but if I understood what he said, he didn't get any with his default install whereas I got tons.

Never before. My Friend had a Atari 800 in the early 80's and showed me BBS' a couple of times. Thats is my only memory of BBS. I asked my parents for a Atari computer for Christmas 81, they got us a 2600.

I really hope you enjoy it.  Sometimes, there is nothing like just old-schooling it.

    @JohnPolka, @Tillek,

Point taken. I agree that it’s better to start out with no investment. I figured out the empty Syncterm directory window is where I add entries. If a sample entry had been there, it would’ve been obvious to me. A short tutorial video would’ve eliminated my frustration. It’s been too long since I dealt with a Procomm Plus-type interface.

I was able to connect to Dark Lord’s BBS. For some reason, I was stuck on connecting to JP's Basement BBS. I don’t know why yet. I’m sure it’s a problem on my end.

I still need to determine how to generate an Insert key on my MacBook Pro so I can add more directory entries.

For me, I’m hoping a BBS will have a small community of people who see everyone else as a person. I miss those civil discussions. Online today, people too often forget they’re talking to another human being with their own problems and differences.

I used to to use my local BBSes to get files for my ST BITD, but that doesn’t make sense anymore. I never played the games much. It was a long distance call so I had to call late at night and limit my time online.

Actually, I'm surprised.... When I downloaded SyncTerm, the dialing menu had tons of entries... All IBM machines of course, and half of them basically dead.

Regarding the "insert" key on the MacBook Pro keyboard, try this link... Page I found googling it.

The BBS community tends to be more civil than in the past.  Then again, there aren't that many.

File transfer is kind of an interesting topic. BBS's that are old systems from "back in the day" tend to have more files.  Ones that are "newer" tend not to bother as things are easy to get on the internet and not hard to get it back onto disks or "disk emulators".  Even games don't seem to be all that popular (something I hope we can change with better awareness).

That said, it really is a die-hard close knit community, and every extra person makes a huge difference.

Not sure about the gender changer (why am holding my breath waiting for the PC police

to pop in right about now?).  :)

Probably because they're on their way and any hope you ever had for running for political office is now gone. :P

850 interface R1: is my UDS-10 for BBS

850 interface R2: or R4: is where the mss 100, eds, or perle's go for calling out and testing depending on the communication software

Just out of curiosity... Is this your setup? (Didn't know you were running a BBS too.... let us know and we'll get it on the list).....

Or are you just familiar with Kyle's setup?

    Sorry, just a little confused.

I am having some trouble with pages auto scrolling or changing automatic where as i cant read or see everything as it goes by to fast. And its not every page, just some. I am using 40 column on a stock 800xl, 850, UDS-10, BobTerm 1.22. I dont see anywhere to change a setting for this. Any tips?

    Thanx

    Doug

The real question is what BBS are you calling?  Generally the "MORE" prompt comes from the BBS, not your software.

The main thing to consider is are your column and line settings right?  If you're using 40 col with 20 some lines, but on the BBS you're set to 80col.... it's going to give you twice as much as you can see (give or take).

Maybe it's something the SysOp of the specific BBS can help with.

  9. My main suggestion to anyone is to try SyncTerm first (or Qodem or one of the others).

One thing I see far too often is people spending a lot of time and money getting a "real hardware" setup.  There is a lot of posting, questions, answers, etc.....

But then something happens.  They call some of the BBS's once or twice.... and then disappear into the "Fruit Roll-Up Zone".  Never to be seen or heard from on the BBS's again.

I don't know if they just got their "fix" or if the BBS community didn't live up to their memories or expectations... but some of them just don't stick around.  So why not try one of the "easy" methods for connecting first, so that you can see how you like it (if you like it)... and if you do find yourself hooked, then look into spending the money and making the plan to find the best solution for your setup.

... anyway, that's my 2 cents for anyone interested in getting started with the BBS hobby.

Thanx for putting this group together. As someone like me who just started BBS'ing this week, this has been very helpful!

Welcome!  Don't forget to check the links post under Resources for the Atari BBS list if you haven't already!

So when you say "just started this week", do you mean "never before" or "just restarted after about 20-30 years or so?"

  11. I actually have a Buffalo wireless bridge.  Don't use it so much right now since I prefer wired connections and all my stuff is in the same room currently.... but it worked well when my mom was sick and I was living at home helping my sister take care of her.  They weren't about to let me drill through the walls, or lay patch cables from the upstairs (running along the stairs, across the floor, trip hazards....)

But it worked great with the Lantronix boxes I had attached to it.

The Basement and Part-Time BBSs are running under the Altirra 3.0 emulator. I went the emulator route because space is limited at my house. I can run both BBSs on a small lap top placed out of reach from three young curious kids. :)

When I develop BBS modules, I typically use a version of my BBS on native hardware. This allows me to test the modules on various hardware configurations including an MIO, P:R: Connection, and 850 interface. For the modem device, I use a Lantronix UDS-10 for Internet connectivity. When I was developing a term program that runs inside my BBS, I also tested it with a classic dial-up modem. The dial-up modems I have are an Atari SX212 and a US Robotics 56Kbps modem (yeah, the USR modem is overkill, but I bought it cheap off eBay ;-) ).

    -JP

That's kind of funny in that it seems that most who mix emulation and real hardware tend to do the dev on the emulation and then use the real hardware.

But if it works, it works!

Just a UDS10 hanging off the serial port of my Mega ST4 here... :)

But what BRAND of serial cable are you using?  Or is it literally just hanging with a gender changer or something?  HMM???  WE WANT TO KNOW!!!!!!

Actually, that would be kind of interesting.... Slap a gender changer on there and you probably could forego the cable..... That could be interesting.....

  14. And a big thank you to all who have posted so far.  One reason for doing this is that I think I've been "that guy" from time to time who isn't happy when people ask the same question for the 1000th time (even though it's the first for them) because it seems like every time it happens, it feels like it's going against the hard work for all the people who have taken so much time to thoughtfully and fully research and post the answer.  I just figured that if we can make it really easy to find these answers, it will be easier for both the prospective Users/SysOps, but also the veterans who don't have to re-invent the wheel and can just quickly find (and point to) the answer.

And if I'm not part of the solution, I'm part of the problem.... so here we are.

Also, if you all think there is a better way to organize the information, I'm totally open.

  15. Thanks Albert.... and thank you for all your work on AtariAge....

One question... would it be possible to have some repository areas that are restricted to certain members?  Like perhaps, a section that is only available to SysOps, or for registered users of certain software?  If not, that's fine... Just thought there might be a need to have sections that have files that you might not want everyone to have access to, without having to have a closed club.....

  16. For STar Fleet HQ, I used the MSS-100 (it was a Mega STE, with a 9 pin serial port) so I just had a 9F-25M pin serial cable, with a radio shack 9F-9M null adapter on the computer side, and a 25F-25F gender changer on the Lantronix side. (I needed DNS resolution since it called out for FidoNet)

For The Veteran Adventurer's Guild, I use a UDS-10 connected to an ICD MIO and what I'm pretty sure is the ICD equivalent of the CX-87 cable that I had from my days with the P:R: Connection.

I also have used the UDS-1100 on both BBS's at one time and while others have had issues with that device on a BBS, I actually had no problems with it.

  18. If you're here, you're interested in Atari-focused classic BBSing.  I thought it might be a good idea to create a club to help as a resource for archiving much of the information from the Atari BBS thread here on AtariAge so that it is easier for newcomers and veterans alike to be able to find information on calling or running BBSs.  Also, it can serve as a place to discuss and archive information that is a bit more in depth than what can be captured in a single all encompassing thread.

Feel free to introduce yourself, and if you have any ideas of things you'd like to see, just let us know!
