  1. My main suggestion to anyone is to try SyncTerm first (or Qodem or one of the others). One thing I see far too often is people spending a lot of time and money getting a "real hardware" setup. There is a lot of posting, questions, answers, etc..... But then something happens. They call some of the BBS's once or twice.... and then disappear into the "Fruit Roll-Up Zone". Never to be seen or heard from on the BBS's again. I don't know if they just got their "fix" or if the BBS community didn't live up to their memories or expectations... but some of them just don't stick around. So why not try one of the "easy" methods for connecting first, so that you can see how you like it (if you like it)... and if you do find yourself hooked, then look into spending the money and making the plan to find the best solution for your setup. ... anyway, that's my 2 cents for anyone interested in getting started with the BBS hobby.
  2. Welcome! Don't forget to check the links post under Resources for the Atari BBS list if you haven't already! So when you say "just started this week", do you mean "never before" or "just restarted after about 20-30 years or so?"
  3. Just out of curiosity... Does RespeQt have modem emulation yet?
  4. I actually have a Buffalo wireless bridge. Don't use it so much right now since I prefer wired connections and all my stuff is in the same room currently.... but it worked well when my mom was sick and I was living at home helping my sister take care of her. They weren't about to let me drill through the walls, or lay patch cables from the upstairs (running along the stairs, across the floor, trip hazards....) But it worked great with the Lantronix boxes I had attached to it.
  5. That's kind of funny in that it seems that most who mix emulation and real hardware tend to do the dev on the emulation and then use the real hardware. But if it works, it works!
  6. But what BRAND of serial cable are you using? Or is it literally just hanging with a gender changer or something? HMM??? WE WANT TO KNOW!!!!!! Actually, that would be kind of interesting.... Slap a gender changer on there and you probably could forego the cable..... That could be interesting.....
  7. And a big thank you to all who have posted so far. One reason for doing this is that I think I've been "that guy" from time to time who isn't happy when people ask the same question for the 1000th time (even though it's the first for them) because it seems like every time it happens, it feels like it's going against the hard work for all the people who have taken so much time to thoughtfully and fully research and post the answer. I just figured that if we can make it really easy to find these answers, it will be easier for both the prospective Users/SysOps, but also the veterans who don't have to re-invent the wheel and can just quickly find (and point to) the answer. And if I'm not part of the solution, I'm part of the problem.... so here we are. Also, if you all think there is a better way to organize the information, I'm totally open.
  8. Thanks Albert.... and thank you for all your work on AtariAge.... One question... would it be possible to have some repository areas that are restricted to certain members? Like perhaps, a section that is only available to SysOps, or for registered users of certain software? If not, that's fine... Just thought there might be a need to have sections that have files that you might not want everyone to have access to, without having to have a closed club.....
  9. For STar Fleet HQ, I used the MSS-100 (it was a Mega STE, with a 9 pin serial port) so I just had a 9F-25M pin serial cable, with a radio shack 9F-9M null adapter on the computer side, and a 25F-25F gender changer on the Lantronix side. (I needed DNS resolution since it called out for FidoNet) For The Veteran Adventurer's Guild, I use a UDS-10 connected to an ICD MIO and what I'm pretty sure is the ICD equivalent of the CX-87 cable that I had from my days with the P:R: Connection. I also have used the UDS-1100 on both BBS's at one time and while others have had issues with that device on a BBS, I actually had no problems with it.
  10. So out of curiosity, do you have 2 machines, or do you have both connected to the same 850? Or do you switch them out? More curious on how you use more than one port if that's the way you do it.
  11. Started adding some topics and such..... will be adding more throughout the week and the weekend.
  12. A topic for discussion on the various options available for connecting a classic Atari BBS to the internet.

  15. If you're here, you're interested in Atari-focused classic BBSing. I thought it might be a good idea to create a club to help as a resource for archiving much of the information from the Atari BBS thread here on AtariAge so that it is easier for newcomers and veterans alike to be able to find information on calling or running BBSs. Also, it can serve as a place to discuss and archive information that is a bit more in depth than what can be captured in a single all encompassing thread. Feel free to introduce yourself, and if you have any ideas of things you'd like to see, just let us know!
  16. Just FYI... Ill be getting some content there after work today.....
  17. It wasn't that, it was just that none of my callers used it since pretty much no one in my area had Ataris anymore.
  18. Where I was, I basically was the ST community, so actually, VT-52 was what I had no use for.
  19. If I ever get things fixed/back up again I might have to talk to you about what RIP stuff you were able to find. Alas.... Or... maybe get RIP running with Carina? ... Ehhhh..... maybe not.
  20. Or post them, in case others are interested too?
  21. Yeah, I actually had planned to get into some IG (maybe with a game) and RIP (there was a RIP thing for RatSoft that I had installed just before the big crash in 93, which I lost all of it).... But then the BBS died.... (But if we can archive the stuff in case I ever decide to put it up or someone is stupid enough to try again....)
  22. Other people did finish theirs. ANSITerm and TAZ both seemed to handle it well, others handled it ok... Even the 8-bit has ICE-T.
  23. Anyone know of any IG or CGS documentation? I recently "think" I got the CGS for BobTerm working, but when I went to The Resistance, all the files were missing (got file not found errors on all screens and menus). I'd like to try to implement IG and CGS, but without any docs, I'm guessing it's a lost battle.
  24. Well, not really. Most of the routers or gateways I've worked with have a DMZ function where any unsolicited traffic that isn't handled by the firewall just gets forwarded to a specific IP if activated. Generally, you'd never want to do this... unless that specific IP goes to another router or firewall device that is itself protected. From there, he just configures whatever he wants, however he wants and doesn't have to worry about the idiots downstairs as long as they don't kill the DMZ. I doubt it would add any significant latency (and if it did, who cares, we're simulating old school 9600 baud modems). The downside is needing the 2nd router. (And yeah, I'm sure you know this Doc, but others might be trying to follow the bouncing ball.... especially since I wasn't really clear the first time I said it, being on my phone and all.....)
