But this truly is rare! I've never seen an auction for a 1050 and that specific joystick (box included!) and likely never will again! Once in a lifetime! Literally! You totally should "Buy It Now"!!!!!!!!!

crap..so it was not me.. it was the host.. I was trying to connect with The Brewing Academy and it was not getting past the login.. but others once I got their numbered addresses were able to work. I think I still might be having some issues with 9600 baud. but overall its working.
Seems various boards I log on to have different things.. if it disconnects proper.. if it wants a specific enter to log in etc..
I have not got IceT to work yet.. but I remember another thread.. so I will be looking there.. that has to do with the PRC.SYS I think.. though I did try it.. and dont remember anything working better.. but we will see.
James
I've personally had issues getting to the Brewing Academy myself... I've been relying on JP to verify that link... it's only recently that I've been able to connect myself.
That said, do you know the atari BBS list at www.sfqhbbs.org/ataribbslist.php does IP addresses now if you flick the radio button to IP's?
It's a real-time DNS resolution every time you update the page.

Actually, am I just having one of those bad brain moments, or is the IP 0.0.0.0 with no gateway?
I can't say that would cause an issue with the junky characters.... but it's an issue.
Just out of curiosity, if you just do an AT <CR> with nothing else, do you at least get an OK from the device? Even if you don't actually see the AT displayed?
-
Just for the record, while some people had issues with the 1100, I actually had no issues with it.

Yes, I got confused by what Venkman said in the other thread that he was using a CX-88... which he then stated he was using an MSS-100 (like I do).
So I posted that for clarity. Since the UDS-100 uses a DCE and you're connecting it to a DTE, you need a straight through... which is what I have on my UDS-10 and UDS-1100.
The problem is that in some parts of the UDS-10/100 manual, it also refers to using a null cable in some situations...
-
You can have a Lantronix box work fine in the device installer but not be good on the terminal end. SFHQ's original MSS-100 wend down that way.
-
-
Yes, it's a null modem cable.

Modem (Emulation) Mode: In Modem Mode, the unit presents a modem interface to the attached serial device. It accepts AT-style modem commands, and handles the modem signals correctly.
To select Modem Mode, set the Connect Mode to C6 (no echo), D6 (echo with full verbose), or D7 (echo with 1-character response).
Note: If the unit is in Modem Mode and the serial port is idle, the unit still accepts network TCP connections to the serial port if Connect Mode is set to C6 (no echo), D6 (echo with full verbose), or D7 (echo with 1-character response).
Echo: Refers to the echo of all of the characters entered in command mode; it does not mean to echo data that is transferred. Quiet Mode (no echo) refers to the modem not sending an answer to the commands received (or displaying what was typed).
Full Verbose: The unit echoes modem commands and responds to a command with a message string.
1-Character Response: The unit echoes modem commands and responds to a command with a single character response.
FROM the UDS-100 manual..
So which do I want? ECHO? VERBOSE OR 1 Chr?

I mean, I really love your enthusiasm and your support for Atari BBSing, but this is literally the old guy from BattleStar Galactica (the "reboot").
"This has all happened before, and it will all happen again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again....."

The Doc is the lantronix expert.
Yeah, but this is clearly an "asked an answered, your honor........" situation.
If someone talks about running a BBS and can't be bothered to do a quick search, should they be running a BBS? Do you want to be their full time Yoda?

If you look through this thread and/or do a search on Lantronix in this forum, you'll find examples of working configurations that people have posted.
That's the easiest way to set up your own config.

This one.. does BITD mean Back in the Day??? As I was typing I figured it out I think.
LOL

Quack.

We'll see.
I start a new job on the 6th, so right now I'm just focusing on the paperwork and making sure everything is good to go for that....
Once everything is locked solid, I'll look at the situation and make a decision one way or the other.

Man, that sucks, Tillek. I hope you can resurrect SFHQ. You had lots of great historical messages on there, not to mention the games.
--Josh
It's not a matter of "can"... It's a matter of "want".
I have a few Mega ST's (at least 1 mega 4) and another Mega STE that might be a quick fix... a 2nd Falcon that was flaky but I probably could get working, not to mention the TT.
I just don't want to sacrifice another machine. I've already lost a Falcon and MSTE. From what I've been told from the various people who have been out, it definitely came through the network wiring. Everything damaged (from all the neighbors) was hard wired to the network or a network device (in the case of the TV's) that was hard wired. I really think the ST's are just really sensitive to it. I don't know how well those lightning protectors work.
But even then, like I said before, this was the actual hardware the BBS ran on back in the 90's. It's more than just losing a mega STE... It's losing THAT MSTE.
And on top of that... those games? I don't think anyone plays them. Those old NeST/AtariNet archives? I don't think anyone reads them.
So it's really just a matter of how much effort, time and equipment do I throw at something that really isn't used that much. Not to mention that there are at least 3 people talking about putting BBS's up so do we really need SFHQ?
There are a lot of other things I could put my time into that would probably be more useful to more people.
-
I'm certain I still have the phone number for that on an old floppy. Might even have some menu captures.
It's just really a shame that he's gone.

Any captures would be great to see again.

Whoa there - BITD, Oasis was highly sought after. Back in '87 if I called into a BBS running Oasis rather than some other freeware, you knew you had hit the jackpot.

I thought I had it right but might have been backwards. I didn't list Hawaii because I tried connecting to it on multiple days and couldn't. The other one I could connect to and there was a third mentioned (name escapes me) but I couldn't connect to that and I just wrote it off as outdated information on the website.
But if you can connect to them, that's good enough for me.
I'm heading out on some errands here so I'll take care of it when I get back.

It was a screwed up book first...you mean you never had to read it in high school English class? I think it was a required read for American students in high school, along with Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, etc . Though I don't know if you're from the U.S or not unless I look up/decode your location coordinates!
The Irony being that these books were written as a warning to us, yet our current society seems to have ignored it all, forgotten, or are the ones in control leading us to a big-brother society anyway...
Actually, I'm American, class of 91 and I never had to read any of those books. I mean, I had to read books, and I was in Honors and later AP English... but those books weren't on the list. We had books like "The Once and Future King", "Lord of the Flies", "The Good Earth" and "Of Mice and Men" just to name a few... but then again, the books you mentioned... yeah, probably more the exception than the rule that I didn't have to read them.

Rampant fanboyism on either side is just as annoying. Each machine has its strengths and weaknesses and pretending otherwise makes me feel like a 43 year old throwback to myself at 6 years old on the playground. Pitiful.
In small doses, it can still be fun. As long as we realize at the end of the day the war is long over.
I mean, I have Apples and Timex Sinclairs and even a Commodore... and I enjoy them... (Well, not the Commodore, but only because it's a newer acquisition and I just haven't had time, but I plan to really enjoy it soon).
Now, it's more like sports fan talk. Trash talk during the game.... then drink beer.
Please, everyone, don't take it too seriously... otherwise, you're the judgemental prick bringing everyone down (not suggesting anyone falls into this arena yet, I'm speaking more abstractly.....)

Please ignore emkay. If you want to see beautiful soft-sprites, look at the game Atari Blast. Properly designed late 70's chips are more capable than some early 80's poorly designed chips. I like to hear pokey emulating sid better than the sid in the commie.
Commode Door 64.

I usually do ignore emkay..........
Thank you... Sincerely... THANK YOU... for pulling the Commode joke. It's been far too long.... and I'm stealing that graphic. (Yeah, I did finally acquire a C128, but still....... It's a classic vintage retro diss......).
(*high-five*)...

the UDS 10 / 100 don't do DNS. meaning you have to know numerical IP adresses, the mss 100 takes names and reaches name servers that converts them making calling easier, the mss allows configuring the telnet protocol to connect to just about anything correctly allowing stripping of telnet padding and other such goodies. The UDS 10/100 is a pita to configure in such ways.
I use the UDS almost exclusively as a receive only device, and the mss I use both as a caller and receiver, if you want to have a networked BBS you want names resolved. ANY lantronix with DNS will be fine it that case.
If we want more callers and more networked BBS out there we really should only suggest devices that can do DNS and allows telnet/raw/padding strip modes.
That's what I've discoverd... no muss no fuss is the way to go.
That's why I put the IP addresses on the Atari BBS List. (It actually resolves them on each page load, not read from the database).
As far as more networked BBS's... I don't think we need that. That just encourages people to call fewer BBS's I think. I also don't really think that the IP issue is what is holding people back.
I think it's more a matter of getting people who participate in these discussions to actually call BBS's on a semi-regular basis, actively participate in discussions on those BBS's and not just talk about BBSing here.
In fact, I'd love to see all discussions on how to RUN a BBS actually take place on BBS's only so that in order to learn how to run one, you first need to learn how to call and post on one.

-
Too bad it still doesn't send people who try to connect when someone is already on a "busy" signal.

I used the MSS-100 for SFHQ because it is (was, I guess) on FidoNet and I needed the domain name resolution. For the Adventurer's Guild (the Carina one) I used a UDS-10 because I have no real need for DNS resolution.

yawn, looks like with all the commodore threads in the Atari areas there is an active concerted push to try to get folks over to that platform... must be a recruitment drive to get fresh blood into their stale and often crazy cadre....
I really wish all the commodore threads would be in the commodore section provided to/for them...
Now if it were about porting the game to Atari that would change everything... but that's not what any of these seem to be about....
Yeah, what the hell is up with that "What about the Commodore Community" thread? How does someone NOT know? I can't manage to avoid it while trying to find information on the Atari.
