  1. You need the cable for the 850 (CX-87 if I recall, the CX-88 is the null modem cable so don't get that)... You can get it at best electronics also or try B&C at www.myatari.com (also on ebay as "myatari" but I just checked and all he has on there right now is the CX-88).

Then you'll need a 25 pin to 9 pin adapter, because I don't think they made the 850 interface cable in a 9-9 (though you could probably wire one up yourself).

Have you tried calling them? They have a phone number at the bottom of the page.

  2. is it viable or merely clever to use ST these days for the internet..?

    and is NetusBee worth buying/implementing?

that guy in 2002 said: 'i use my ST for web browsing all the time..."(!!!)

    oh

these days i use an atari 1200 baud modem and the terminal prog vt52 emulator i think

    just to call BBSes.

fun and good enuff for me!

Are there actually any Atari BBS's on dial-up? I thought they were all telnet.

  3. So far, lost a Mega STE, 42" TV, Roku box (the higher end one), the U-Verse gateway, the network switch is faulty (some bad ports), potentially damaged the MSS-100.

Not really sure how the other equipment survived (or if anything else fried that I haven't noticed yet). I'm hoping the SFHQ hard drive is ok, but until I get around to hooking it up to another system, I can't be sure.

I don't think SFHQ will be coming back unless I can somehow fix the MSTE.

The lightning strike actually blew the AT&T box cover off so hard that it flew across the driveway (about 6-7 yards) and broke a window in the building next door. (Fortunately, the landlord owns both).

Neighbor across the hall from me lost 2 TV's and her Spectrum box... neighbor upstairs lost a TV, her PC and her AT&T gateway too.

  4. Just to update.... My internet connection is back up and I have the firewall re-configured for the proxy (for accessing BBS's through the SFHQ page that some BBS's use, The Basement being one of them) so if you use that page to access those BBS's, they're good to go.

The TVAG BBS is still down as I can't seem to get the new gateway to recognize the Lantronix boxes. The Lantronix device installer sees the two UDS devices, but not the MSS-100 (which was on SFHQ).

  5. Just another question here... Has anyone considered an external option?

I'm only asking because I have some other non-Atari ST drives that I'd love to be able to use on my 8-bit if it's possible... For example, the Future Systems GTS 100 and 1000.... Both would be great to use on the A8 (or failing that, a way to take the mech out of the GTS 1000 and use it in an Indus GT as a 360k drive but still have the track display and the buttons.....)

    Just wondering....

  6. So a little bad news.....

Just like in 2015, we had a bad storm today.

Just like in 2015, that storm seems to have taken out my UVerse.

Just like in 2015, that storm seems to have taken out the computer running SFHQ BBS (at the time, it was my non-flaky Falcon, this time, my cherished MSTE that ran the BBS back in the day).

This time I also seem to have lost my TV as well, but frankly, I'd rather have lost my MSTE.

Funny though, the 800xl running TVAG was locked up, but it rebooted fine.

I'm not sure what the future holds for these BBS's I don't think I can bear (or afford) to lose another one of my machines.

Obviously TVAG will be down until my internet connection is restored, assuming the UDS-10 survived. At that point I'll make a decision.

    SFHQ.... who knows.

  7. Is there a a plugin for BobTerm for this?

Yeah, that's a pretty good point. It really doesn't matter what options are "out there"... It's a question of what terminal programs support them and whether anyone uses them (or if they still exist).

Generally speaking, I'm not going to switch terminal programs to just call one BBS unless it's epic. Which also calls into the question of editors. If there is a term that does CGS, but no easy editor... well, SysOps won't make screens, so who cares?

That is the question that should dictate what to support.

  8. I don't use any Atari BBS's these days but the odd one on the C64 and thankfully people are encouraged to leave feedback before logging off and NOT dropping carrier....Warnings if that is done..

Just such a lazy practice...Manners of a womprat!

    A) - TRAITOR!!! :P

    B) - I would think that encouraging people to leave feedback before logging off would encourage people to drop carrier... at least in the Atari "community". Half the time they can't even be bothered to say "hi" when creating a new account when the email editor pops up.
