Do they deliver on Memorial Day?
-
Probably both will arrive Tuesday... but not before going to Warrandale Pennsylvania.

So just to apologize... I spent some time tonight trying to get Connect95 to work with the CosmosEx with STing and ...... failed miserably. I couldn't even get Ping to run. In fact, I haven't really managed to get the CosmosEx to work at all with it's "sting driver". I'm fairly busy this weekend so I may not really be able to do much more with it, but I'll try. In the meantime, if you have a null cable and a PC with a serial port, you could use that without any other hardware. Or, I would consider a Lantronix box (I prefer the MSS 100). The benefit of that is you can use any terminal program, or any program that uses the modem, over telnet (the computer doesn't know the difference). In the near future, I was hoping to play some Falcon over the modem.

Well, as a SysOp of another Atari ST BBS... I guess I'm qualified to help you. (I actually do a lot of this, I just haven't specifically tried CosmosEx STing implementation with Connect97 yet). Maybe I'll do that tonight so we can get that information. Actually, there have been a lot of discussions over on the 8-bit side concerning the Lantronix boxes and other ways to connect to BBSing... almost all of that applies to ST's. Just ignore everything about 850's, P:R: connections, MIO's and all that since the ST already has a serial port. But I'll walk you through it.

The CosmosEx has a "beta" sting stack program. You'd have to use that rather than the "regular" sting program. (I think they cover it a bit on the forum). That said, I haven't had a chance to try it with Connect95/97 (does Taz do native Telnet? I use Taz with a Lantronix box). With the Lantronix box you can use any regular term program.

Which problem was it that they fixed? I never knew they got around to that... It's good to know. From what I read, the main complaint was the blocks vs. sectors thing that wasted a lot of space.
-
Maybe I should buy it... I have at least 10 A8s and drives... Fire them all up with DOS 3 and post the picture.... That would be funny.
-
Yes, because I totally need 10 of them

I always wanted to try DOS 4 and look more into it... Thank you! (And 5.25 floppies aren't all that hard to get really... you might want to look into it again as there seems to be a retro revival... might be able to make some beer money!) I'm basing that on the fact that I keep mailing DOS disk images to people. But thanks for the pack. (I got DOS 3 with my first 1050 drive and I can't say I hated it...... But alas, if it's not compatible, it's not useful). I should write a game and put it on DOS 3 just for kicks.

Just so this doesn't get out of hand........ I get where Toddtmw was coming from. He gets suggestions to buy something, then nothing in the way of a response and then he sees a bunch of posts like the ones we all just got done with. We see "yet another Steve bashing" which seemed to be almost orchestrated... I think this one was really just a misunderstanding. I've talked to Toddtmw and he's a good guy. He had concerns, I hope that all works out. Thing is, this "community" does tend to be hostile at times, especially with newer people. I've very often recommended to people looking into Atari that I run across on the BBSs or other forums that they don't come here (especially on the ST side, because God forbid you don't want to use an ultrasatan!) But The Doctor isn't really one of those. He just saw yet another "let's bash Steve" thread and wanted to defend someone who has done so much for the community (and the criticism of Steve seemed like it was going way over the top which made his supporters even more defensive). An no sooner did one thread end, then another would start. But in this case, I think we're just dealing with a misunderstanding... Toddtmw is new here and had a legitimate WTF moment when he realized he might have just sent a bunch of money to someone who wasn't going to make good (not knowing that some of the people posting negative stuff were known trolls) and then The Doctor defended a great member of the Atari community since it looked like yet another unjustified attack. But really, I think we're all good here.

But does it also do "modem emulation"? It's not just about the ability to telnet, it's about letting old school programs that want to talk to a "modem" (AT commands) connect through telnet. Something that does both would be great.

I use the AtariMax SIO2PC (usb) with ProSystem to read and write images directly all the time. And you're right that the USB version doesn't need an Atari connected.

I actually was able to find a ton of 1gb CF cards a few years ago on ebay I was going to use so I could switch OS's at will. But I thought TOS 2.05/.06 was 512mb? Or are you running another driver? (And no, I'm not playing "stump the professor", I really want to know because... well... I have all those 1gb CF cards....)

Most sought after? I'd disagree. Mega STE, 1040STE (with 4mb, especially). It's really a matter of what you're going to do with it. I have a STacy. I bought it for one reason mainly. I love my retro machines. I would like to travel and play with it. I'm considering going to the gatherings in Indianapolis and other places. I run an Atari ST BBS... I'd love to bring an ST setup so people could play with the BBS on a real Atari (especially since the only RIP terminal for Atari is monochrome, it would work nicely). I still fantasize that someday I'll head down to Kentucky and help DarkLord get his BBS on Fidonet so I won't be able to claim that I'm the last Atari BBS on Fidonet (I know it seems like I claim that as a matter of pride, but in all honest, whenever I say that, I cry inside). The STacy would help with that. My STacy was purchased because I actually do stuff with my Atari computers, and I might want to "do that stuff" outside my home... and I might not want to drag a whole storage tote's worth full of stuff. (In my aged years, I find myself traveling lighter and lighter). If you can't actually say you'd want a "portable" ST because you want to take it somewhere and use it, then your decision on whether you should get one should focus on one question. "Do I want a $xxx paperweight"? The STacy in my opinion is no better than any desktop ST. If you want to enjoy it at home, spend the money on a Mega STE or 1040STE (or save money with a regular Mega) (way more bang for the buck potential). If you plan to put your ST in a car and go somewhere and do Atari stuff.... Get a STacy.

Getting A8 Online with Lantronix and 850 Interface
Tillek replied to Paul Westphal's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Nope. Because I have no idea what you're talking about, so if I did I certainly didn't do it intentionally. ButI'd be happy to go over my settings with you so we can figure it out. -
Falcon and TT owners needed for testing
Tillek replied to 19rsn007's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
So I ended up getting home a bit later and had a few things to do once I got here....... So didn't get around to any videos (though it's not really any more impressive than the one we already have) At any rate, I tested it on my TT030 with CaTTamaran card. I also have a Cyrel Sunrise but unless I disabled that, the game would run, but give two bombs when you got to the part where you'd enter in the code (Indy's notebook). So on ST Low, it seemed to run fine from the C Drive. When I tried TT low, it loaded, but ran in monochrome. I also tried running it from the E partition (after deleting it off my C partition) and it worked just fine there as well. I obviously didn't play all the way to the end, so I can't vouch for 100% of the game, but it looks very promising. Great work! If there is anything specific anyone wants me to test, I'd be happy to do so. -
Falcon and TT owners needed for testing
Tillek replied to 19rsn007's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
It works on a TT. On the bus heading to work so I'll post more details about it when I get home. And maybe video too! -
Not all games can run from a hard drive though, so he wouldn't be able to use those. Though that said, if game playing isn't your focus or the games you want to play work fine from the HD, then you're pretty much set with what you have.

I would suggest looking into BigDos http://rainer-seitel.onlinehome.de/bigdos.html That will allow you to have partitions up to 2gb and will increase the number of drive letters available to you.

When you say "so many other boards" are you talking about the Atari ones, or just in general? -
Falcon and TT owners needed for testing
Tillek replied to 19rsn007's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Sure... I'd be game. My Falcons are a bit disassembled at the moment (one was dead the other flakey, so I'm trying to get one working now and fix the other later). But I also have a TT030 up and running on the same desk as my main, so I can try with that for now. Just let me know what I need to do. -
Has anyone tried the ports of Doom,Heretic.Hexen,Quake
Tillek replied to WimpMiester's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I second that. -
Getting A8 Online with Lantronix and 850 Interface
Tillek replied to Paul Westphal's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Those of us running BBS's are grateful for your efforts. Just hoping you're checking in before spending money so we can make sure you can connect the right way with the right equipment. Ask us if you have any questions or problems.... -
It doesn't have the floppy image functionality. You can emulate a hard drive, but not a floppy drive with floppy images. (The full CosmosEx has an actual connector for an actual floppy cable that can replace your floppy drive in addition to the ACSI/SCSI connector).
