  1. Also, for the real "vintage" lists..... http://www.vintagecomputerbbslist.com/
  2. Well, if you wish a place to start.... <shameless plug> bbs.sfhqbbs.org port 5983 </shameless plug> As we discussed, it's a Lantronix box, so if it doesn't answer, there may be someone on (given a recent Ars Technica artilce and being picked up by SlashDot and some others, there have actually been a lot of calls lately). If you want to look at that article.... it's about an Apple BBS a friend of mine runs, but I'm hosting the fTelnet for it from my BBS site so some of them found their way to me. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/04/a-1986-bulletin-board-system-has-brought-the-old-web-back-to-life-in-2017/
  3. So does Ray have a store, or do I just email him? Anyone know the average turn around time on his products? Thanks again for the suggestions so far. I'm looking forward to getting this thing fixed up (it also has a problem that is generally believed to be a VDC issue, but at least it works fine as-is in 64 mode).
  4. I actually met Steve a few years ago when I bought a bunch of stuff off him. Really nice guy. Too bad he wouldn't be up for a meet.
  5. Long story short. I'm a die hard Atari guy who is about to acquire his first Commodore through the generosity of a Commodore user who recently got his first Atari. The machine doesn't include a power supply though. Any recommendations where I can get a reliable one? Thanks in advance.
  6. Really? For some reason I thought it was Texas.
  7. I'm noticing more and more Ohioans in Atariland.... Maybe we should look into having a little Atari get together sometime.
  8. If you could take some pictures... that would be cool to see that many 1200xls laid out. Only have 2 myself.
  9. I could listen to the music test for hours!
  10. Sorry.... I was more into disk-based games and BBSing.
  11. What? That colorful Atari logo is totally cool! I could watch it for hours! But yeah, without some kind of device to run images or a disk or tape drive, cartridges are your only real choice. There are cartridges that will let you load tons of games off a menu though... might be a good option for you. In fact, if you look at some of the other suggested videos while watching your video, there are some videos on that very subject.
  12. True, but besides you and one other user, I don't think anyone's really taken any time to look at them... and I think when they see the 12000 messages, they get scared. Probably need to do a tutorial on how to use the system........ Actually, I had a few people try some games last night. Got slammed due to an Ars Technica article about an Apple II BBS that I'm hosting the fTelnet portal for (so many of the users found their way back to me). Almost 20 new users since Saturday morning (and I doubt any will ever call back, but we'll see). Sure did give my fTelnet proxy server a bit of a load test (3021 connections or attempts since yesterday morning). Still kind of amazing how many old school BBSers from back in the day don't know we still exist.
  13. I suppose to be honest, we wouldn't know if it was worthwhile until you uploaded the list. So I guess you should upload the list, so we can look at it and tell you if it's worthwhile to upload the list. Or if you're fairly sure there isn't anything sensitive on there, you can just image them and upload the collection and someone who's interested can figure out how to recover it on their own.
  14. Yeah, those licenses are weird... Our store tried to get one for yeas and finally did (small town in Amish country). Still didn't buy my booze there... Walmart had no business knowing how much they made me drink. I treat Walmart like it treated me. While they serve my purpose, I treat them well. When it doesn't, I have no use for it.
  15. During a dark time in my life (after my computer business of 13 years failed) I was an assistant manager at Walmart for 6.5 years. Explain what purple passion you could possibly have that would keep you from pursuing your retro hobby when I can walk into one to further my retro hobby? (I mean, I'm half joking but also half "seriously dude, you don't know shizzle, you think they're the devil? I got documented proof they are but I'm still going to "use them" to further my retro computing agenda because THAT puts ME in control of the evil").
  16. It was temporarily running the BBS. Thunderstorm..... No response. Black screen. It does have a power light but no HD/Floppy activity light if I recall. I also lost my U-Verse router. The BBS ran through a Lantronix device which survived unscathed so I don't know if the surge came through the network (I have a lot of machines and devices and only the U-Verse router and Falcon were damaged). The garage behind the building was struck by lightning and perhaps the apartment building itself, so it might have come through the electrical, but then again, only the Falcon and the U-Verse router were trashed. (And a lot of U-Verse routers died that day, when they came to fix mine, he said there were still 200 people they had to fix in the area). I did try swapping out the power supply and ram from the other Falcon (that is kinda flakey) but no change (so it's more involved than the power supply). That's as far as I've looked into it so far since lately I've been focusing on my BBS and the TT030.
  17. If you have kids who can't leave well enough alone, that's on you. When I was growing up, we were raised not to touch that stuff.
  18. Honestly, for stuff like that I just went to Walmart (not sure where you're from but...) they sell a universal adapter that you can set the voltage and it comes with multiple ends.
  19. With BigDos 2gb partition limit, you'd have 16gb with the same 8 icons. Also, you only need the icons for the drives you need to access. For example, how often do you manually access your download areas from your desktop? I usually manage mine from my BBS program which is through command lines. The bigger question is "what are you going to fill that space with". I only have about 2.5gb combined on the BBS drives and ... still have empty space. I was going to get a 18gb scsi drive and wondered what I'd fill it with.
  20. Always glad to help. Then again, you can always atdt blah.blah-blah.com can't you? As long as you can get into terminal mode... I know it works in ICE-T. I never used the dialing directory anyway since I have a file with the addresses and user/passwords.
  21. And thanks to Dr. V for pointing out something I forgot to mention... The part of the APE package I use the most is the ProSystem. Frankly, I prefer real disks. Most of what I use APE's disk drive images for is backing up the Carina BBS system hard drive. I also use it for the modem functionality... and a little for the printer... but mostly, it's ProSystem. It makes churning out real disks easy.
  22. It's all good man..... I was just keeping up my smart aleck quota for the day. (Been posting too many somewhat-productive messages... I could get my web license revoked).
  23. It wasn't that long ago that I got the latest update to APE. I mean, there might be more active development if people thought of new features that they needed, or bugs that needed fixing. I have nothing against the free software, but to me, APE has what I need right now. The other programs are still "in active development" because "they aren't finished yet"... by that, I mean the authors still have things they want to add to their apps. Some of those "enhancements" they are working on are already in APE. Some are features APE doesn't have. Someday those apps will have all those features and more and on that day sure... going with the free software will be a no-brainer. But if I want certain functionality today, right now, this very minute... I have a choice. Pay the fee or wait. I chose to pay the money. That was the right decision for me. Maybe not the right one for you and that's cool. It doesn't mean that I'm smart or you're dumb (or vice versa) it just means that we have different priorities. I personally have helped quite a few new "late in life Atari fanatics" lately, and I recommend both options with the pros/cons for each.
  24. As far as I ever knew, there weren't any A8 Fido mailers. None of the current A8 BBS's are running any kind of message networking but if I recall there was a discussion on Boot Factory with another former Express SysOp. So the question is, are you looking to set up an Atari BBS, or only if someone is doing message sharing?
