  1. All of this chatter has got me interested in setting up a dial-up and/or telnet ATASCII BBS!

Or.... (and this isn't necessarily directed at you personally) perhaps people could try calling the ones that are out there?

It almost seems to me that we have more SysOps in the "Atari BBS Community" than we have callers.

And that's based on my observations calling around to the Atari boards. I try to hit them daily or every few days max now and still far too often it will say "Last Caller - TIllek".

    Breaks my heart.

  2. @Doc, on the LANTronix:

If you ever come up with info on these two issues:

The big things are (in order of priority [from a BBS standpoint])

1: Some form of BUSY message to inform the caller if this link is just busy, or dead.

    2. DNS Resolution. Would be nice to get working, would help.

It works, but could be better.

    :)

Just for the record, I'd love to have the IP address either logged, or delivered with the connection string perhaps (or even better, the same way the caller id was transmitted for modems that did that). RatSoft has no way of intercepting the data from the "RING" where the IP currently appears. "RING 192.168.1.1" as the case may be.

And like Kyle said, a "doesn't connect" when the system isn't responding is ok... Like him, I need a way to let users know "hey, it's just busy, really, everything is totally cool so call back in a minute" rather than "hey, could be busy.... could be down.... figure it out yourself" as they wander off and never come back.

I remember a few months ago, after activity started to pick up on my BBS (actually a bunch of new callers lately... just wish they'd post or play games or something. :( ). I got home from work and like I normally do, I sat down to call the BBS and check the messages (even if no users post, I still read my Fido areas)...

I get the "can't connect".... start swearing under my breath about the thing crashing... turn on the monitor.... and someone is actually online!

  3. So for a TI99 or Apple II I'd need a regular Serial cable then?

No. Fujidude is not correct. Well, to be fair, he's correct in what he's describing... but the MSS-100 has a DTE port.

I use an MSS-100 on my BBS machine. I use a standard serial cable with a Radioshack null modem adapter on the computer end and a gender changer on the Lantronix end because unlike the UDS-10 which has a female 25 pin connector, the MSS-100 has a 25 pin MALE connector (as you'd expect with a DTE port).

    UDS-10 - 41EQPAM6APL.jpg

    MSS-100 - MSS100.gif

This guide from Lantronix explains it well (and includes wiring diagrams). http://ltxfaq.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/25/~/rs232-serial-cable-wiring

For any other computer, you'd use the same setup (except perhaps with an adapter depending on whether it's a 9 or 25 pin).

In the case of the 850, they do have null cables (They call them terminal cables) http://www.ebay.com/itm/CX-88-Atari-850-Terminal-Null-Modem-Cable-New-800-XL-XE-/140954304558?hash=item20d188002e:m:mXmgO1W1DVGfPh3Yk-V7qNQ

But here is what I'd suggest. Find a 25 pin null modem adapter (hopefully with gender changer) and put that on the MSS-100 so that what you have is a null modem adapter (and/or gender changer) which ends up with a female DB-25 facing the world and never take that off. Then use a "regular modem" cable for whatever machine you are currently using it on (since most modems were DB25 female connectors, finding that cable should be easy enough)....

That should be good to go.

  4. Well I managed to find a MSS-100 here in the junk pile at work (I thought I had seen one a while back) so I'm good. Now all I need is the modem cable, an SIO cable, and I'm all set. The bonus is that I can use this on my TI-99, Apple II, and C128 (although I need to get an RS-232 adapter for it). Of course I'm not exactly sure what the point of dialing into BBSs is anymore since I doubt there's much going on on them, but it will be fun. Why not?

I've seen Particles BBS get usually 10-50 new local messages a day... They're a Commodore 8-bit BBS running on a real C128D.

I call daily so I don't get overwhelmed. Last time I skipped a couple weeks I came back to over 500 messages.

  5. What kind of cable do I want going from the MSS-100 to the computer? Serial or Null Modem?

It's a null modem cable you need. (I actually use one of these for my BBS, and I rely on the DNS resolution since I'm in FidoNet and can't convert the whole nodelist to IP addresses).

The only thing you have to be careful about.... not all null modem cables wire up the hardware handshaking lines. While you'd still be able to use it, hardware handshaking probably won't work... (Then again, not sure if the 850 even supports that or if it matters at 9600 and below).

  6. I've been following his channel for awhile and he does some really good game reviews. He is the only guy on YT that does lets compare videos on real hardware, he refuses to do comparisons on emulators.

He does admit in his videos that he may be biased towards the c64 in some ways because that's the system he grew up with however, I don't think there's anything wrong with his view on the Atari.

For some, the war will never be truly behind us... :(

  7. Actually I just wanted clarification because based on what you said, very bluntly, it can't be done. However I never heard of such a limitation on external devices. I wasn't trying to stump anyone. Believe it or not, as someone with a mega STE who has something bigger that 1 gb attached without modding it, I thought I might have been able to help if I understood exactly what you were trying to do.

Indiana based. Added to the TT group because of their repair reputation... https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1332823243441261&set=gm.389262254775315&type=3&theater

  8. The internal ACSI controller in the Mega STe limits access to all attached storage (internal and external, ACSI, SCSI, and IDE) to only 1GB. This is because it uses only 5 bits for addressing. There is a known mod that will allow the controller to use 6 bit addresses. It this mod that I am asking for service to apply to my machine.

So you're saying that I can't use an ICD Link2 to have a 2.1gb drive on my system? Or am I misunderstanding what you're trying to do?

  9. Ok... got the issue fixed. Had something that was causing issues with the logoff maintenance (totally my fault, so it's fixed now).

Didn't have anything to do with the fTelnet client thankfully.

I was actually using it most of this evening to catch up on my messages and do some other maintenance, so it's looking pretty solid.

This weekend I plan to do some more enhancement of the site and the status (and put the status on the Telnet page so you can see what the system's status is before hitting connect).

For the 8-bit SysOps....... I still haven't heard from the author about the ATASCII functionality. Allegedly it can do ATASCII and I can get it so it can do ASCII with a 40 col blue screen (it even does the buzzer!), but when you hit "return" it identifies itself with an ASCII CR and won't do ATASCII mode. :(

However, looking at the code, the functionality should be there, so I'm trying to figure out how to get it working again and see what issues remain to be fixed. We shall see.

  10. I've been farting around with making a 1450XLD LIKE machine. I say like because I have 2 1200XL's and I'm not cutting them to make this. So I ended up using a 800XL that was broke. Not sure how it will turn out but we will see.

Well, what I was thinking was something more where the bottom is replaced (leaving the original untouched) and then the top would actually interlock with the beige top of the 1200's vents on the side. Add some port extenders and install 2 1050 guts and you're good.

And nothing has to be destroyed and could be easily restored.

Of course, this would require the big 3d printer and a lot of precise measurements and trial & error.

  11. Thank you all, I just wanted to sort of warn people just in case, its very unlikely that I will lose it on here because when my own depression hits I normally take myself to a quiet room and look out of the window, it calms me a bit and takes away the chance I'll be rude.

Just seems its always a new thing after the other, she's only 17 and handles it like a mature adult, i remember me falling to bits when they told me I had cancer back when I was 20...So proud of her...

    thanks

    Paul..

People being rude on the internet? The hell you say!

But hey, you obviously beat that cancer at 20. She'll beat this. The survivor ability seems to run in the family.

  12. As many know my daughter Serena has been in a fight with anorexia over the years, she's slowly getting the better of it and gaining some weight but on Friday she and we were told she has Osteoporosis and in a pretty bad way with only the hope that she can fill her body with food to a mass scale, giving the other illness its a big ask and its hit us all very hard, I need to keep myself busy hence the posting but I'm having good and bad days, I'll try to keep myself off if I'm bad but please try and excuse if I am a little odd in a post.

    Thank you

    Paul and family..

    Don't even worry about it.

  13. I've used both SyncTerm and the Lantronix in experiments to do other internet protocol stuff by changing the port.

Like getting a website. I've used SyncTerm and a properly formatted Http request on port 80 to get a web page response.

I was actually working on using this to experiment with my Atari 8-bit test BBS to update a webpage of it's status in real time. (With STar Fleet HQ, I do it with an ethernec card, but I don't have an ethernet adapter for the A8).

If I could find a way to have 2 Lantronix (one through the MIO and another through an 850 or P:R: (I have both) I could ACTUALLY do it in real time). At this point, it's more of a "after a user logs out".

The thing is, at some point you're not really Telnetting, but just using raw connections.

  14. For anyone who was interested but got a problem with validating your email address......

I fixed the bug so it won't do that anymore. (Originally, that was your "real" address field... which had to be 20 characters or more to "validate", so I fixed that).

Thanks to those who have checked it out.
