As far as the telnet goes, I'm a big fan of the Lantronix devices. I use an MSS-100 for SFHQ (for the domain name resolution for Fidonet) and a UDS-10 for the Carina system. Other than the lack of a busy signal and IP logging, I've been happy with them. I have not been happy with TCPSer and the Commodore BBS server. I think Lord Cygnus is using the SIO2PC as his interface to his Lantronix, so that might be helpful. Not sure what baudrate that supports. I've considered using that myself, but I prefer the MIO for the "retro street cred".
I'm not a big fan of "modern" stuff on my BBS systems (that's just a personal choice) but for backing up, I use SIO2PC with Ape. I'm sure others will have better suggestions.
Maybe it might be better to let us know what you might already still have? And how "real" you're going to keep it? I mean, you could go Ultimate 1MB, SIDE2, APE for the printer/modem (and backups perhaps, it's too slow to effectively replace a hard drive).
I'd be happy to help you with whatever you need.

For anyone interested.... the Veteran Adventurer's Guild can be reached (for now) at bbs.sfhqbbs.org port 4444.
It's not 100% where I want it, but it's stable enough for people to call. Enjoy!
The games are in a sig called "The Arena" (keyword games).

Ok... Let me know if this works for you. As soon as I can track down the original RoboWar disks, I can archive those for you as well. (They're here somewhere, I've seen them recently but I boxed up a bunch of stuff to try to make some space to organize the junk).
It's a 16mb HD image ATR so if that doesn't work let me know.

After re-constructing MAIN, ROBOEDIT and ROBOWAR, I have found some errors in those files. As soon as Tillek can get me what he has we'll know for sure.
I modified ATR Tools by adding a "Detokenize on Demand" feature where you can click on a character in a file using the "View as Binary" option after "View File" (to get the variables used) and then it will show you the detokenized result of a single line.
It's not a complete restore / fix yet, but with a little help, we'll get there

I'm copying it now... sorry for the delay.
My place is so disorganized right now (getting it organized this holiday weekend ended up being an epic fail) and I can't find the original disks... but I'm copying it from the working MODSEC. It includes my simple menus, so MAIN.TXT is the main menu A is the MAIN from Robowar.
I'm also including Zenobia. It'll be on a HD partition ATR... (I'm still cloudy on file transfer between the A8 and PC... it's been awhile but it will come back to me).

Hopefully the hang-over wasn't too bad

Unfortunately, the memory issues have nothing to do with that. That's a life thing.

I'm with Tillek. I also run a BBS so that's a 24/7 proposition although I can't say
it's "hands on" all the time.
Then there is a Mega STe I'm working on restoring to full functionality. My STacy
sees a lot of use, both at home and at at work.
Still play the occasional game on my Jaguar and Lynx too.
Sadly, as odd as it might seem, my Falcon and my 800XL see the least amount
of use...
You have a sick Mega STE!?!?!?!? I'm on may way! We have to save the little guy... (and in the meantime I'll bring my sick Falcons and we can play "Atari General Hospital").
But seriously, what's wrong with the MSTE? Anything I might be able to help with?
-
Yeah, but is this active? I was under the impression this was old and he wasn't doing them anymore.
If he is still doing them.............. my paychecks are about to evaporate quickly.
-
I just wish someone would come out with a new run of MIO type devices. (I have a 256k that I'm using and somewhere in storage I have a 1mb, both original ICD units).
But the CSS Black Box or something else would be great. Even a PBI "serial/parallel" (or even serial only) device.
Any of the "more technically endowed" able to speculate how fast of a serial port a PBI device could theoretically handle?

Did you play Atari today?
I run an Atari BBS (soon to be 2)... I >WORK< Atari every day.
Any my "Atari Room" >IS< my office.
But still, thanks for the pic. It's always nice to see others. Love how that monitor looks with the Mega ST(e)s.... (I have the same one on mine).

Castle Smurfenstein? sounds interesting

And congrats on those side projects hitting some milestones, I know how good that feels

Back in the "begin times"..... Apple version of "Castle Wolfenstein"... but remade with Smurfs replacing the Nazi guards.
-
That's cool, I suppose I can wait

Well, I'm also celebrating because a lot of my side projects hit some milestones today (this being one of them) and there is alcohol involved. If I tried to send it to you now I might end up sending you a grossly inappropriate version of Castle Smurfenstein........

PM Sent...
Thanks... I'm pretty much shot... and like I said, I'm not 100% sure if it came from the floppies I had downloaded it to "back in the day" or an archive I downloaded. I started this about a year ago, and I barely remember what I had for dinner last night.
But I'll try to sort it out tomorrow and get it to you.
-
I looked through the files and I only see RoboWar II and not any hint if it's 2.0 or 2.2.
Which ever version you have would greatly help out

Thanks,
Jay
What's the best way to send it to you?

Just for info.... This is the setup that it's running on....
I am running on an Atari 800xl (my actual childhood machine that I always wanted to run a BBS on but couldn't because my parents wouldn't let me have my own line unless I paid for it and I was too young to get a job).
256k Rambo (that I installed when I was in grade school)
256kMIO
An SH204 hard drive (basically, bypassed the ST host adapter and went straight from MIO to the controller on the SH204... works beautifully).
Lantronix UDS-10 @ 19200
R-Time 8 (original) and Basic XE
I find Basic XE makes it run a little faster, but I haven't noticed any difference when it comes to making it run "better" but the Zenobia docs say they require it.
I do use an Atarimax SIO2USB to do backups and transfer things between the Atari and PC, but I don't leave it connected most of the time and it doesn't do anything with the BBS except the backup.

I checked out the RoboWar II archive and there are 4 files that fail the CRC check, 3 of which are BASIC files: Main, RoboEdit and RoboWar.
Does anyone have an earlier version of this? Otherwise it's going to be a slow recovery...
Do you know a quick way to determine which version you have? Triads mentioned that a version for Carina 2.0 and then this 22 archive.
I just know mine works with Carina 2.7. But it was over a year ago so I don't remember if I copied it from an archive, or from my old floppies. I'll look at that and get back to you.
Either way, I can get you something that works.
-
Ok... Just a small status update. I got the system running with Zenobia and Robowar. I contacted the guys for the first round of testing and we'll see how that goes.

I have Carina and Robowar working how I want (or so it appears) and once I get out of bed I'll work on Zenobia. Once thats done I'll turn it over to some guys I got with earlier for testing.

I think I got Robo working last night but it got late and I work early. Things got slow since I was sick last weekend and with my long commute I only get a couple hours a night. I'll do the finishing touches tonight and if it works I'll let you know what I did. I also have a few people lined up to help me test it to make sure it's stable-ish before I open it to the wild.
Funny thing. My biggest problem right now seems to be finding a good editor for the ATASCII and ASCII files.
Unfortunately my work blocks Atariage so I'll post more details when I get home.
So... Veteran Adventurer's Guild or Veteran Gamers Guild?
Also if things go as planned, I should have Zenobia and some other games too.
-
Oh! I could take mine in! I'll tell them it's for testing our web-app in "alternate non-java environments".

I have the stereo RCA ports of my Mega STe connected to the line inputs on the CD channel of my receiver/amp. The sound is...squawky. It sounds overdriven, like when you push an amplified sound source onto something expecting a line -level signal. Any ideas what's up with that?
I can only say that when I was using my Mega STE as my main machine back in the day, I had it hooked up to some nice speakers and I can't really say I had any complaints.
I'm not audiophile but squawky... I'd probably have noticed.

GEnie was amazing, I sure do miss those days. Good stuff!
I never got to experience those much. Occasionally when there was a free offer (but notice how the free offer barely covered the sign up time and reading all the disclaimers?)
When I was old enough and had my own money that I could have chosen to spend, they had already gone by the wayside (or were still on life support but there were better ways).
It would be great if someone could actually find archives of that and set it up as a nostalgia piece.

played this game for years... then lost it bought another copy and noticed they changed some things and the dos they were using... played it again for about a year and a half... moved and sure enough turned up 'lost' again... love the game but it sure can consume some massive amounts of your time
The best games do!
Otherwise.... well... we wouldn't waste time playing sucky games. (Usually)

Here is the Complete Product Guide in PDF format.
Wow... One heck of a necro-bump but thank you. I'm actually working on playing a lot of those old games start to finish and that one was definately on my list.

I also had a conversation with David Hunt, and got the runaround about not having a local copy, and his intent to jump back into working on Carina 3 in the future ( the only thing here that comes to mind is Lance and BBS Express on Cart.. ha )
Well, that's good to know about the ANSI....
As far as Dave Hunt. Not sure when you talked to him but I had sent him an email last January (2016) about purchasing the software if possible and getting the most up to date copy and this was his response. (I'm assuming there isn't anything special about me and that anyone who could get their hands on it would be able to run it). As for Ben, the copy on his site was corrupted.
I had asked him a follow up question about something, but never got an answer. I work on it now and then, but just never made it a priority based on the activity level of SFHQ and the Atari BBS's I call. Lately, SFHQ has had a bit more activity and I've been working on both.

Greetings Andy!
All of my Carina files are currently on hard drives that haven't been
fired up in over 10 years now. I don't currently have a Carina system up
and running, and can not offer much in the way of support. The internet
forced me to switch over to IBM's to make a living.
That being said, if you can find a copy of Carina, you are welcome to run
it with my blessings, free of charge. Ben Smith MIGHT have a copy...
Sorry I can't be of more help...
Cheers!
The Shadow

I think it's a safe bet that since this thread has been towards the top long enough, anyone who cares enough to actually call has already been following it.
Plus it's silly to really promote it on a temporary address.
