Mentzer was definitely onto something with the reduced number of sets, but it's debatable if he even believed in the one set to failure in his prime. He in fact had quite a few "warm up" sets. It was only years later, post competitive career, that he did the do as I say, not as I do concept of one set to failure and nothing else.
