For everyone in the UK the new issue of Edge has a four page feature on the making of AvP (although two of those pages are just a big picture of a facehugger). It's well worth a read, and one of the caption, quoting one of the head guys at Rebellion claims that 'one programmer came and went pretty quickly, as he just couldn't do the maths, the game is fondly remembered enough for him to still be claiming to have been 'lead' on the project though!" Anyone have any idea who this could be?
Is it Andrew Whittakker? Do I win a prize if I guess right?

Thanks Nukey Shay! I musta missed those threads! Last time I edited it took about a minute. This time it booted me.
But I guess they are going to change forum software eh? That'll be cool to see what the new setup is like. Is it going to look exactly the same? Or a different layout for the forums itself?

Is there any chance we can get the edit function on this board fixed? 90% of the time when I try to edit one of my posts for mistakes or omissions, things go terribly wrong. Like just a few minutes ago it completely disconnected me from the site after waiting for five minutes after hitting the submit button. Now I get here and find out my edit didn't take.

Anyone remember the Gameboy Color for the SNES? Remember how it was a cartridge that fit into the SNES with the circuitry it needed to emulate the Gameboy? Then you fit the Gameboy cartridge in there and played it on your SNES?
Anyways, I was thinking something like that would of been cool for the JagCD. Instead of emulating anything, it would of pumped up the Jags main RAM and Video RAM and then you plug in the little memory track inside of it to save CD games. Ah, to dream huh?

I love a good debate. How about you Link?

The Predator AI in AvP is very good. But the Alien AI seems minimal. Any flanking you see is accidentlal because they are coming out of a room beside you. Or maybe happen to slide around a round table and some of them end up on one side of you. Usually though, they get stuck on these obstacles.
They are always facing you because they are one dimensional bitmaps for the aliens. Andrew is making claims that they can run off and warn the others or something like that in one of the interviews. They'd have to be able to turn around and look away from you to do that. Has anyone seen one of the Aliens in AvP running away from them backwards? I haven't.
Althouh i is cool he is giving interviews for the community.

-
Andrew claimed, that if you make noise, it will attract the aliens. But how to avoid noise?! There isnt even a sound for your footsteps, thus no feedback! I think he was halluzinating a lot in this interview...
I wholeheartedly agree with you on this.

If Dragonforce were stalking me he would know where I was instead of welcoming me backWell, maybe he's just not a very good stalker.

i dont get it. thunderbird says that. but id software. i mean. freaking ID SOFTWARE. cant make doom work good. but can make wolfenstein 3d make top notch.who to believe...i believe john carmack. the best programmer in the world.
. but i might be wrong.Well, I think Doom runs great on the Jag. But if you don't think it works good, you gotta remember it was their first time programming on the Jag. They were just learning it.
-
@holy_fluckRegarding Dragonforce: Seems like you have a stalker.
Congrats!That's hysterical.
I think in the Middle Ages that was considered romantic.

If the Jag could do Quake then AvP wouldn't run at 3FPS and iD's port of Doom wouldn't have been at extra-low-resolution.As Agrandeu said, this was their first time on the Jag.
In the JEO Battlesphere updates as it was being developed, Scato claimed with what they had learned about the Jag they could get the Jag to do Doom at 320x240 at 30fps 'EASILY'. This is paraphrased from memory but I'm sure the rez I gave and the speed are correct, and that the word EASILY was used. But there is a chance I could be mistaken.
What I remember as the main problem, is the high speed video memory to do something like Quake. The Jag may not have adequate video RAM to throw the textured polygons to the screen fast enough. I think the analogy was that if a Jag had the same amount of memory as a Pentium 100, whatever that would be depending on the machine. Say 32mb and 1mb video ram. The Jag would match it or beat it in performance. This is my memory and understanding of what I read in posts on JI2 and other places.
-
I know that the processing power of a risc chip isn't comparable to a same clocked "normal" cpu. However, it would beinteresting if the Jag could surpass the processing power of an 75-100 MHz PC with proper programming (means extensive use of parallel processing).@Stone:Its just a matter of finding an equivalent to express the Jags speed through PC specs- if you have that you can compare even apples and oranges

I believe about a little over a year ago on JI2 T-bird said the Jag's overall processing ability was about equivalent to a 100mhz pentium. But this was over a year ago, so my memory might be in error.

I think the GOAT Store is a great place
Then again, I own it, so I might not be the best source to ask. As for games, I think I'm a pretty good source.
What games do you have for the Jag? I can see you have AvP, so I'll just go with whatever else:
Jaguar
Tempest 2000 - the best there is, period.
Zool 2 - Personally (and people think I'm wacky, so maybe this isn't your best choice) Zool 2 is one of my favorite platformers. It's insanely fast, and it requires a lot of quick thinking. I love it. Your mileage may vary.
Flip Out - A wacky puzzler that I love.
Val D'Isre Skiing and Snowboarding - It isn't the "fun" snowboarding we get now from games like SSX and 1080. It is pure racing action, and it's really quite good at that.
Attack of the Mutant Penguins - Rare and getting more expensive, but quirky and frustrating... the best things to have in a puzzler!
Missile Command 3D - I'm not a huge fan of the original, but something about this game really grabbed me and I spent week after week trying to beat my best score. I love it!
Jaguar CD
BattleMorph If you liked CyberMorph at all, you need to get the sequel that is about 1000 times better.
Vid Grid If you like "classic rock" and puzzle games, you'll really enjoy this game. I sure do!
Iron Soldier II Bigger and better than the first, I adore this sequel!
Hopefully, that is a good starting place. I wouldn't suggest Myst unless you haven't played it. The Jaguar version is the best looking version of Myst, but it's Myst. If you've never played it, it's pretty cool -- kinda a point-and-click adventure thing. Blue Lightning is okay, but don't pay more than a couple bucks for it at most. It is a very unimpressive title for the Jaguar in almost every way, and had no need to be a Jag CD game.
I see you have a new copy of Syndicate available. And also a copy(used) of Theme park with instructions. Those are some pretty competitive prices. I do believe I will be doing some trading with you shortly.

Well, I've learned something from this thread. Those who picked Wolf3d over JagDoom are all out of their minds!

-
Doom over Wolfenstein for me. Doom has the lighting, the angles, the textures. Also the characters in JagDoom are 3 dimensional, whereas in Wolf3d they are only two dimensional. Even the PC version of Wolf3d the characters are 3-d.
The missing music for me is nothing since I also have the PC version and the PC in game music is nothing great or memeorable. I want music, I'll listen to the radio.

Hey SinigLord, when are you going to release the encrypted versiion of Painter?

-
That's unfortunate if that statement is true. And you seem proud of it for some reason.
Since Thunderbird and/or Scott LeGrand claimed it was floating out there, maybe they're proud of that?

Well, if they kept putting smilies and wink emoticons in their posts every time they'd mention it, I'd start to wonder.
-
BS will never end up as a distributable ROM as long as Doug and Scott live and breathe. The ROM is already floating around out there.

That's unfortunate if that statement is true. And you seem proud of it for some reason.

You know how you dont see Harry Sr. In the first part? When you rescue him (Sr.) He looks exactly as he did on the 2600. I hate it when they give weird makeovers to old game people, but they didnt.Hey there fellas, there may have been some people reading this who haven't gotten that far yet.

-
Don't mean to knock this off topic, but what was the reason Mad Bodies won't be on CD? Was there a definite reason given?
-
Hang around a while Fojy, and you'll learn that JaySmith 2000 is DA MAN around here.

$50 for a Jag with shipping sounds like a pretty good deal to me

Welcome to Atari Age! It's good to know that Atari even made an impact in Japan.
a impact is such a big name...dont you think? even the xbox is american and it isnt a succes.
We don't need no lip flappin' outta you DF! The Jag flattened 'em in Japan! Thats is why the Jaguar is known as Godzilla over there!

-
Hey downix! Can you link us up with where you got the $6 part, and which part it was? Thanks!
And a special thanks to LinkoVitch, with his online repair tutorial. I have a working and a non working on the way. I'm hoping I can fix the non working one as well.
I've successfully fixed at least one of just about every console out there, so I might as well add the JagCD to the list!

Really? Can you help me fix my Saturn?
