Trying to compile a list of cart based handhelds/tabletops
brendan replied to sku_u's topic in Modern Console Discussion
What about the Game Park and all of the one-of-a-kind Atari handhelds? -
Must have gameboy (not advance) games?
brendan replied to ElephantStyle's topic in Modern Console Discussion
For what it's worth, I don't think I saw any nominations for: - Kirby's Pinball Land (one I play almost every time I pick up my GB or GBA) - RC ProAm - Kid Icarus (if you liked the original NES version, at least) And I would second Castlevania's, Metroid II's, Pokemon Pinball's, and Revenge of the Gator's nominations, as well. (Ok, so do you get the idea that I like pinball yet? ) Great info about some other original GB games I need for Xmas, too...I had no idea the game & watch and original DK were good on the GB! -
This may be a dumb idea, but how about just wrapping your thumb with tape or a band-aid? I used to wrap my fingers with electrical tape (just because it was handy and cheap) before a multi-hour drumming session and it always kept me from getting blisters. (Of course, if an NES Max would work for you, I used to quite like the "cycloid" instead of a D-pad...mine are just too worn out to use now.) Just some thoughts.

I'm interested! PM sent.

I agree with Godzilla. When I was much younger and I played Berzerk into an early grave , I swore that if I could ever have backup cartridges, I would. So especially for games I like to play, I will try to have 2 copies (one boxed, one loose or just a loose pair). Third copies are for trades or for setting up some other Atari-needing person along with a spare console.

How much of your collection is stuff you owned as a kid?
brendan replied to Room 34's topic in Atari 2600
A whole bunch of my stuff is from when I was a kid - I still have my working heavy sixer from '79 and all of the cartridges (minus the Berzerk that died and I took apart). I still have my Apple ][+, Tandy Color Computer 2, and NES and all of the related cartridges, software, and hardware and then some. Of course, since the 80s, I've about quadrupled the size of these collections... Damn, I'm a pack rat. -
I've had nothing but good luck with everyone here so far, including: CPUWIZ Video Game Addict DoC.ShocK (back at you... ) Susuwatari (updated 4/28/2004)

Not sure if anybody else has mentioned this one, but we got our console (a heavy sixer) in '78 or '79 (can't remember for sure) from Wilson's, a department store chain that, at least in southern New Mexico, later became Service Merchandise. We also got a fair number of cartriges and controllers from them, as well (along with my Star Wars action figures and ships and playsets ). Otherwise, it was Sears that we would hit for cartridges.

So does it still count as "this week"? I swear this has never happened before and probably will never happen again, but I overheard an elderly guy talking to the guys at GameStop here in north Austin yesterday about how he had some Atari cartridges for them to look at in the trunk of his car! I handed over my wallet to my fiancee to finish out the purchase (we were picking up a used DVD movie) and ran outside to see 4 guys huddled around this guy's Cadillac. He had 5 consoles, including a Vader and a Sears and a big tub of cartridges and controllers. I picked up: Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator (Sega) 004-01 Math Gran Prix (Atari) CX2658 Flash Gordon (20th Century Fox) Boxing (Activision) AG-002 Riddle of the Sphinx (Imagic) Swordquest: FireWorld (Atari) CX2657 Armor Ambush (Mattel) Congo Bongo (Sega) 006-01 The Earth Dies Screaming (20th Century Fox) Bustout (for the Tandy Color Computer) Triple Action (for the Intellivision) for $25. I didn't have my checkbook with me, but my fiancee let me borrow some cash (note to self - be prepared in case there ever is a next time). Still trying to decide if the Vader and Sears units are worth $25 each...but I have his phone number. Don't know if any of the Atari carts are that rare yet (haven't had a chance to look them up here yet), but a couple of these have been entertaining, and half I hadn't ever seen before. I just know my luck has run out for the year, though - something bad is going to happen...

I did Me too! I'm getting ready to, myself. Along these lines, it seems like videogaming girlies aren't that hard to find anymore: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...videogames_dc_2 Of course, mine prefers slightly more up-to-date (in other words, prettier) games than I do, although it's not hard to get her to play Klax, Tetris, (among other puzzle games), any racing game, and Moon Patrol (the latter on the Atari, I might add). Life is good...

And did you ever note how many carts start with "S"? On my shelves, almost an entire shelf is dedicated to "S", as I have them stored alphabetically, too. (Of course, it doesn't help that I have 5 space invaders... ) But there seems to be an awful lot of "Space *" and "Star *".

How about 7 feet wide? I picked up an LCD projector and pull-down screen at my company's fire sale a year and 1/2 ago (and have the projector mounted in the closet so that it shines through a square hole in the wall). Yes, the pixels are rediculously large and I don't always like to have to wait until dusk to play, so most of the time, I actually play Atari on the 27" Panasonic in the bedroom...

I definitely recommend the original GBA - you can always add a backlight (actually, it's a frontlight, but it's internal). See my web page for some pics and some tips to install the Afterburner light, along with my reasoning to not trade in my GBA on a GBA SP, which was a preorder option at the time: http://www.polylith.com/~brendan/VideoGame...fterburner.html Of course, what I really want is a portable Atari like I've seen folks build... Cheers, Brendan

Well, you don't know me (1st post - long time lurker), but I live near/work in Austin, and I'll be there tomorrow. Look for one of what I'm sure will be many guys with black T-shirts with white Atari logos. (At least I hope my fiancee will have washed it by then... ) I don't know if it will be the kind of event where folks do any trading (never been to one before), but I have my bag all prepped. Just to introduce myself, I've been a long time Atari lover - I still have the heavy sixer that Dad bought in 1979 along with all the games we had along with my uncle's setup (just had to fix a bad game select switch solder joint). I've picked up games (and the spare console or 2) from any number of places, trying to track down games that I had played at my grandparent's and friends houses along with others that I hear are fun, and my collection is slowly but surely expanding. I definitely "collect to play", even though I don't have enough time to do that as much as I'd like. I'm right at around 150 unique cartridges now... (Of course, I also have my old NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and Dreamcast and numerous games for those, but I always find myself coming back to the 2600 for the most enjoyable and rewarding gameplay.) (Oh, sorry, to appease Godzilla - that's heavy sister...no, sexy sister...no, big sexy! Yeah, that's it! ) Cheers, Brendan
