  1. Crossposting my experiences out of the retrosix discord just so they have more visibility.

I found with my particular board revision (rev 14) of the 2600 (America region), there was a resistor soldered onto back pins of the TIA, from pin 6 to 9.

    PXL_20230923_184856888.thumb.jpg.63ff11a45b2c8759ccc648239863f8a7.jpg

After some googling figured out it's a stock atari tweak for improving color (the resistor existed on newer versions of the board out of the box it seemed)

Since CleanComp V2 wasn't specifically tuned for this variation, I tested it out and the color change was apparent with the resistor connected, especially over composite.
    A few comparisons below:

Svideo without Resistor:                                                                                                                      Svideo with blanking Resistor:

Composite without Resistor:                                                                                                                      Composite with blanking Resistor:

Svideo without Resistor:                                                                                                                      Svideo with blanking Resistor:              (blur deinterlace from the capture card kinda messes this up)

Basically, if you have a rev 14 board, if it already has the blanking resistor installed, add it back after installing cleancomp, if it doesn't have it at all, add it in.

  2. Found a decent bit of 360 games today, the more expensive ones were the ones missing manuals but I decided to get them anyways...

Also found an LCD etch a sketch animator, apparently the succesor for it was like a game console?! There's always some obscure game console you've never heard of.

Finally, I also found a golden cousin to the TI SR-51-II calculator I've had for a while, I'll have to use a power supply to see if it works still although it looks like someone tampered with it.

  3. Those DOOM finds are pretty sweet, if I was to collect anything for PC it would be classics like those.

Also, Last couple months of thrift finds, not anything too crazy, but I did see CRTs for the first time at a thrift store in ages which I have very barely seen in my area. Got a smaller one for smash bros. events. Also went by a garage sale for the first time in a long time earlier and did grab a Wii box, it was only really exciting since I wanted a spare one for Smash Bros. purposes, and I offered slightly too much since I didn't know ebay prices, but it was nice to see gaming items.

  4. Wasn't able to thrift much in february or march due to a car accident, thankfully the car is back and repaired now, but here's the little bit I have found. I haven't tested the Tac-3 joystick yet but the tiny bit of info online says it's atari pinout. Wii Fit U was a more practical pickup since Ring Fit is starting to feel repetitive.

  5. I haven't played too much of this recently due to there being so many games out there but I do have fun with making levels, reminds me of using lunar magic back when mario world romhacking started becoming accessible. Going for the world records is maybe even funner to me though. Here's my favorite levels I've made so far. The first one is meant to be an open world sort of exploration level. The second was made for a charity gaming livestream event, Tip of the Hats.

  6. I'm barely too young to much nostalgia for these (the crappy mcdonalds versions of these on the other hand...), but I do remember seeing these secondhand as a kid and thinking one of the licensed ones would be cool to have, years later and I've never found one at a thrift so I guess I might be a slight sucker for the Sonic 3 one. On the other hand I almost kind of hate how these look exactly like the originals, I know thats the point, but why not take some creative liberties or even retroactivly apply a new license like rebranding the sonic 3 one as sonic mania?

What's that USB cable? It looks like a game port to USB adapter but IDK.

The adapter is a Displayport to DVI one, I might use it for my slim dell optiplex since it only has displayport and vga outputs.

Also, for the 1CHIP snes I found, I determined it was by connecting it and my old snes to my capture card and comparing screenshots of scenes with white text, not quite an applicable test for everyone though.

Yeah you got it.  The 1CHIP has a few games that may, yet not 100% certainly could act a bit strange on a handful of titles.  Super Ghouls n Ghosts also Pocky & Rocky supposedly get some weird graphics warping but my games never showed this and I have one that came from a DK Super Set.  Even the 1CHIP can yellow, just not horribly as much as the others before them from what I've seen.  The cleanness of the graphics compared to other models is no joke and it's obvious, especially as the quality of the TV you jack into goes up.  You should definitely swap it out.  I was going to say $70 was steep for thrift (and kind of really is) but then I saw the list of games there and you did quite nicely.

Also if you're into Sega PC games from that period I might have something you'd be interested in that's new.

I got garfield more because of how much fun of him gets made on the internet these days, plus slight nostalgia for the genesis version. Older PC games aren't quite my thing to collect much of, since they aren't just "pop in and play" especially the older you get. Games that have modern source ports like DOOM on the other hand are still nice to have.

  9. Found a SNES bundle along with a few other things at a local Salvation Army this weekend, I really only wanted the Controller (the one I have is the later variant), and Mystical Ninja and Mario Kart, but when I took it home I realized this console wasn't yellow. I learned about SNES variants, the original motherboard vs. 1CHIP systems, and that basically the newer, non-yellow SNES's have slightly better picture at the cost of slight video oddities with a handful of older games. Guess I'll be swapping this one out from my old yellow SNES.

  10. In the launcher of minecraft you can create "profiles", for a profile you can set which version of minecraft to use, you'll want to set it to the latest snapshot, which are basically betas. The version picking feature is nice for going back to old worlds due to all the changes in minecraft but it can be confusing when all the hot new buzz is about things not in the version of minecraft that runs when you just hit "play" by default.

  11. Got my arduboy and it's related micro arcade siblings from the bundle finally today, I won't lie, I mostly got them for the novelty. My first impressions of the Arduboy maybe confirm this as well, the buttons aren't the most comfortable to use and the lack of a start/pause button seems limiting. Oddly enough, the micro arcades are a lot more comfy to hold, as they're a bit thicker and the buttons are less flush with the case.

  12. I've always known of Zelda games but never cared to play them until BOTW came out, where I played Zelda 1 in anticipation. Now I'm ready to do a chronological zelda marathon, so I had to get these. For Zelda II I'll be using with the Switch Online version since I've heard it's continue system is harsh compared to Zelda 1's and I'd rather have the option to use save states if I feel I need them.

  13. Finally came across a speak n spell today, electronic and chipmusicians loved sampling this around the turn of the decade and I've been looking for one since (and they used to be all over thrifts before I ever looked for them in the mid 2000s). I've never heard of Koudelka but apparently it's a nice jrpg, despite the case falling apart it had all 4 discs.

  14. Wow sweet, both of them at the same time. Shame the one manual is gone but for $2 easily replaced at not a loss. I know people hate on that game so irrationally but it out Zelda'd zelda in enough good ways in how that adventure game played out.

Well, that sounds like that'd be pretty sweet to try, but double check the second pic, I won't be trying them any time soon ;)
