Yes, the Harmony cart is awesome. It's like having a hard disk in your 2600. By the way, Moon Patrol works fine for me, no file extension changes needed.
-
Jammed rolls the screen on the Harmony (and on a Supercharger). The file is (allegedlly) NTSC.

Ok, I verified Buzbard's suggestion tonight. Highlight Space Invaders (or one of it's hacks) in the menu, do NOT press the joystick button to load it. Instead, press and hold the reset switch. The game will load and if you keep holding the switch the cheat is enabled. Or, as was suggested, you can play Space Invaders Deluxe which has double firepower enabled by default (but I like Space Invaders Arcade myself).

Just wondering out loud here. Has anyone ever built a homemade multi-cartridge selector along the lines of a Videoplexer? If so, my two questions are: -How would you connect the cartridge slots? Daisy chain them to a single ribbon cable? -How would you do the switching? A switch on the voltage wire for each cartridge?
-
So joystick button followed quickly by holding reset. I will try that. I tried the reverse, I pressed reset first and then tried pressing the joystick button but that didn't work. In fact I found an undocumented feature of the Harmony cart by doing that. Pressing reset while a game is highlighted in the menu will load the game.

I don't suppose there's any way to do the Space Invaders trick when running it on a Harmony Cart? (where you double your firepower by holding down the Reset switch when powering up the machine...)

Video Games with the Coolest Names

My Harmony Cart arrived yesterday. All I can say is that I now have a new favorite Atari accessory. Sorry Stelladapter, you've been bumped to number 2. I saw some posts about long menu load times. I don't see that. In fact mine loads so fast I usually miss the yin yang altogether, and I'm using an old SD card. I think the problem may be that some folks are tempted to just throw the whole 2600 library into the root directory of their SD cards. This may slow the menu load and will also make selecting a game a nightmare. I suggest using two SD cards. One with the whole library for completeness and another for day to day use that contains only your favorite games and leaves out the stinkers. For example, my card has just under 200 games separated into about a dozen folders. I sorted them by company (Atari, Activision, Imagic, etc. You could use genre instead, like Arcade, Sports, Driving, etc.). My largest folder contains only 49 games. Sorted this way the menu loads very quickly and game selection is simple.

The 7800 joysticks are some of the coolest looking joysticks ever... and the most uncomfortable. For one button games I just use a 2600 stick. What is available for two button games? I know about the game pad and will probably get one but sometimes a joystick is just better. Are there any third party choices? Will I have to build something myself?

Zaxxon Atari 8 bit cartridge - Going rate?
tkarner replied to tkarner's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
That auction is exactly why I asked here. Right now there is just one loose 8-bit Zaxxon cartridge on ebay and the buy-it-now price is $69.99. Same seller also has an 8-bit HERO that I'd like but they want $49.99 for that one. Any suggestions where I can get these for a reasonable price? -
How much should I expect to pay for an Atari 8-bit Zaxxon cartridge (not disk or cassette)?

New Plug n' Play system actually has GOOD classic games!
tkarner replied to jeremysart's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yes, that's the one. Not Whack-a-Mole. Your character is an Eskimo and you walk around clubbing seals. Also, I found Xevious on the unit. It is listed in the menu under a completely unrelated name (which I forget at the moment). -
I use a 32" Sony WEGA TV, circa 2001, for all my retrogaming and vintage computing. I think it represents the pinnacle of standard def CRT design, and therefore its perfect for the old stuff. It's a flat screen, 480 line, 4:3 CRT. They made smaller models too and up to a 36" model. The 32"+ sized models had a video mode (that they called "movie" mode) that did some sort of anti-aliasing that really improved the picture sharpness, especially for onscreen text. It's perfectly serviceable as a PC monitor at 640x480 and even 800x600. It has RF, composite, s-video, and component inputs so there's no problem connecting anything vintage. And since it's CRT, light guns are no problem. There is no better way to play Duck Hunt.

New Plug n' Play system actually has GOOD classic games!
tkarner replied to jeremysart's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Ok, I picked up the 101 at Walgreens yesterday for $9.99 based on the reviews here. It has just enough good NES games on it to make it worth it but it sure has a lot of stinkers too. What's up with the game where you club baby seals. Seriously, it has a game where your character actually clubs seals. WTF?! And the build quality of the unit is pretty crappy. There's constant audio interference and the unit occasionally gives me a static shock. After the static discharge the unit either freezes or resets. -
Any chance of these polish books been converted to English
tkarner replied to carmel_andrews's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I'm not a Polish speaker but I have some experience with Slavic languages. I can try to translate some of those book titles for you. That might help you decide which books to focus on. Your avatar is amazing I know ZERO of 'em Thanks. I can't take credit for the avatar. I found the graphic on the homepage of some flash game site that I no longer remember. As for Ixglobpt Ugzibniac, my first thought was that he must be a Serbian fugative war criminal.
-
Ixgobpt Ugzibnic must be the president of FEV (the Foundation to Eradicate Vowels).

Exactly what is your character supposed to be in this game? It looks like something from a Mystique game.
-
Reading the subject I was expecting a homebrew cartridge that displays the time on the TV...
-
Thanks, I'll try that. I was just getting frustrated. It's one thing when you get stuck but at least you know what you should do. Here, I had no idea what, if anything, I was doing wrong.

I guess no one else knows how to do it either. The refueling boom has a mind of its own and deploys less than half the time no matter what I do causing me to run out of fuel. Shame. An otherwise interesting game is reduced to unplayable junk.
-
I'm having some trouble refueling my plane in this game. At the end of each level the tanker appears and I fly near it to refuel but the fueling boom may or may not deploy. It seems random. Manual is no help. Do I need to do something or be in a very specific position?

I've had mixed results using MP3s. Wav files work more consistently. But my prefered method is to hookup an old laptop to my Supercharger and use wplaybin.exe. It converts bins to wavs on the fly and plays them in realtime. I have it setup so that double clicking a bin on the laptop runs wplaybin and loads the Supercharger.
