What's Your Pipe Dream Games On The Jag.
CaptainBreakout replied to Atariboy2600's topic in Atari Jaguar
There was a PC DOS shareware-era game called Skyroads that I could see working as a Jaguar game. Anyone here remember this? -
What's Your Pipe Dream Games On The Jag.
CaptainBreakout replied to Atariboy2600's topic in Atari Jaguar
Yeah, it was better (we're talking the original SCII DOS game)... good enough so that I played it all the way through. The voice acting was cheesy but cool, and the planetary lander would actually land in the large window under the planet graphic, rather than the tiny status window on the lower right. This was probably the most significant difference, since you could easily spend 20-50% of the game driving the lander around. The Ur-Quan Masters was an open source remake using the 3do code, so it's better then the 3do version and as far as I know it's still free. Also there were lots of fanmade upgraded sound track packs and other neat bonuses (including an entire second mission, effectively a sequel). So there's no cause for tears if you have no 3do (although it's still a top ten game for that console easy imho). -
So... tell me about the Gravis Ultrasound?
CaptainBreakout replied to 82-T/A's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Yeah... Tyrian ! I think I got it to work on the Roland Sound Canvas. Might have been the AWE. I remember it sounds great. That's one of the games I had to really monkey with to get past the Runtime Error 200 glitch (on a computer that's too fast, I think a result of using Borland Pascal). Had to hexedit the thing. Anyways great game for fancy sound cards. -

Star Control 2 (Or Ur-Quan Masters if you prefer) Wish I had the time and skills to port it myself. -

Anyone interested in looking for a GUS or something like it for their retro rig might be interested in this trade thread I just started. This is targeted at an owner of an Another World Jaguar cart, but I guess I'm willing to entertain ideas. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/291574-trade-your-another-world-jaguar-cart-for-my-rare-sound-cards-gus-roland/ -
Greetings... I'm testing the waters to see if this kind of trade might work out. I've been trying to think of what I have that's htf and valuable. I'm after Another World for Jag, and I know that's both. Luckly I realized I've been saving PC sound cards that are becoming impossible to find now, and have prices on eBay (when they show up) that are in the neighborhood of what Another World would fetch. If you are looking for rare PC sound cards (building or upgrading a vintage DOS rig) and willing to trade your Another World cart, let's talk. We could probably make a deal.

Strawberry Shortcake: Musical Match-ups (Parker Brothers)
CaptainBreakout commented on DoctorSpuds's blog entry in DoctorSpuds Reviews Things
This game ... oOoOO .... This game. I think it's meant for kids age 0-1 (and only because it's colorful, noisy and slightly interactive). My kids had no interest in it whatsoever. I thought "santa" would give it to my younger daughter (age 2) for a goof in her stocking. On game night, both my kids looked at it with a perfect WTF stare. Ok ok, I'm guilty of leaning towards the 80's for flavor with my kids toys, but I'm not crazy enough to artificially recreate an entire American Greetings chronological media phenomenon aimed at my children. Even if I had, I doubt the game would have much more of an attraction for them, since I think part of it requires seeing the dolls around town, on TV and at other kid's houses. To enjoy this without snearing at it, I think they'd have to be familiar if not obsessed with the characters (which I observed in my sister during the actual time period). Anyway, yeah, I think this "game" is a relic at best. Having grown up next to my sister and actually knowing who Lime Chiffon was, it still didn't hold my attention for longer than 2 minutes. My kids were even less interested, and wanted to go back to something fun like Ladybug, or something more genuinely awesome, like Astal for the Saturn. I suppose if one happens to be the kind of person who collects Strawberry Shortcake dolls, it would be amusing to see a larger one in a display case holding this cartidge and a joystick. Other than that, there's not much use for this title outside of irony. The Trashheap Has Spoken. -
Thanks to the cool members who I cut deals with. Much appreciated. Also seeking an Intellivoice unit, and bump. Or just hit me up for a chat... Why not?

I swear by my Pentium II 400mhz with 100mhz fsb setup. Slot 1 cpu, and 256mb of sdram. Microstar motherboard with 3 ISA slots and an AGP 2x for the vid card. It's the best of both worlds. All the (pre-Windows) Ultimas run, and so do things like Descent 2, Command and Conquer, and Quake. Also most stuff from the CGA/EGA days works well enough. Many games from in and around the 386 era have their own built-in throttling routines, so going too fast isn't as much of a problem as I expected to encounter. If I really need to slow things down, good old Moslo usually does the trick. Anyway, I recommend this route. Other bonuses include using MSDOS 7 (aka Win98Se with GUI=0 in the config) which can use 60gig FAT32 partitions on a solid state drive with a PATA adaptor (my BIOS supports up to 120gigs). This gives you an immense amount of HD space. An Nvidia (TNT thru GeForce4) or ATI Radeon (or even a Matrox g450) with native VESA 3 compatibility will handle a wide spectrum of graphics modes hassle-free. An ISA sound blaster (an AWE64 is my fav) to round it all out... also able to provide audio in nearly all circumstances. Anyway, I guess where I'm going here is I find more power and speed, up to a point, in pure DOS is something that is usually an advantage rather than otherwise. I also take advantage of the CPU to handle dos-based emulators, video/music players and demoscene stuff. Just to see how far I could take this, I once built a Pentium 4 2.8gig DOS machine. I honestly couldn't really see any appreciable difference in performance from the P2 rig I mentioned above, in DOS anyway. Also it was hard as hell finding a motherboard that supported a P4 and multiple ISA slots, so for that reason alone I don't see any reason to go past a Pentium 2.

Well, I'm happy to report save2600's details are correct. The Seagull and the Best adaptor make for a good solution for a jagpad on the 7800. Best testing it out tonight, and runs fine with Asteroids and Rikki & Vikki. I'm sure that means it runs fine with pretty much everything. I remember reading somewhere that this thing didn't work with Roc n Rope. I don't have that game. I had trouble with a Genesis controller on Popeye tho (another Parker Bros). I'll try that at some point. Also Genesis... Need to try this out on the Genesis. I doubt Start or A will work, but I'm curious to see if I can use a DB9 Y-cable to plug in another controller and see if I can start games that way... Or what.

Street Racer (Atari)

Wow I had no idea this game was so, um... multi dimensional? I don't have this game on my rack, but now I realize it needs to be. -
Bump-a-loo-bop. Also trying to find a 2600 Polaris, Stargate (color) and Star Fox manual.

A brief update...
CaptainBreakout commented on DoctorSpuds's blog entry in DoctorSpuds Reviews Things
I had good luck ordering from Best Electronics recently. Their website and ordering methods are a bit of a throwback to paper catalog days, but they did deliver. Also I believe they have refurbished/reengineered 7800 power supplies. -
"Daddy, I like build robots." -my 2-year-old daughter
-
I've never see such a young person so keyed into robots. I mean she's only like 28 months. Still just figuring out Duplos. But wow... Wants to know everything about robots. I think Short Circuit is her favorite movie. Ponies and princesses don't do a thing for her.
-
Congratulations for encouraging and fueling her interests! So many parents don't pay enough attention to their kids to notice the things they're becoming interested in, leaving potential learning opportunities to die from neglect.
-
Yeah, I'm happy to encourage my daughter's world-conquering ambitions. Not doing so would be a disservice to humanity.

A brief update...
CaptainBreakout commented on DoctorSpuds's blog entry in DoctorSpuds Reviews Things
Hmmm... Forgive me if you've done these before, but I'll rattle off a few titles ... Since I'm here staring at the Kellogg's racks. A Misterious Thief (misspelling intentional) Obelix River Raid II Secret Quest Mines of Minos Saboteur ... those ought to keep anyone busy. There's always the 7800 . Or you could get yourself a Jaguar and a straight-jacket. Or go real crazy obscure and go for an Epoch Super Cassette Vision. All of these things I don't really advise, except maybe the 7800. -
Hiya! Looking for any of the manuals listed below. Just thought I'd put the word out here. Let me know if you'd like to sell or maybe trade... Retogaming with real hardware? Hard. The gap to interfacing the controllers and video to the typical at home stuff is ever-widening.

Plenty of LCD TV's from 2008-2012 available with every input under the sun, including S-Video.
-
Less hard and more expensive IMHO. Either RGB-mod and grab an OSSC or; a pile of HDRetrovision cables + Trinitron off Craig's List.

Pitfall! (Activision)
CaptainBreakout commented on DoctorSpuds's blog entry in DoctorSpuds Reviews Things
I used to listen to Live 105... The FM station in the Bay Area circa 1994, and play this game. It was retro even then. I liked how the game was mostly silent. Noise happened when important things happened. (You could listen to pop.) That was good. I could hear the music of the day. "Alt Rock". And play Pitfall. It was already out-of-style... And it was fun reinterpreting it with a background of "Our Love is like water..." by Live (the band, not the station, which was on the Live 105 FM station...). "That's the part that is confusing." -Pirate Girls 9, They Might Be Giants. -

I spent some time looking at these on eBay, and, if you go back further, garage sales. I wanted to like them. In fact, having worked at a plastics fabrication company (TAP), I appreciated them moreso then most, but still... Don't own one. Since we're all adults here, I advocate... Build your own!!! Are you a woodcrafting hobbiest? Yay! Go for it! Get those fancy hinges too! Maybe handy with a table saw? Sweet. Did you know you can cut clear acrylic sheet with most circular blades? More teeth the better. Some raw materials, a plan and a tape measure, and you can craft your dream console's home. My son is into building model train layouts, which is all about being handy, resourceful, and attention to detail. I'm realizing there's a lot of cross-over potential here in this hobby.
