I still need to test it. I don't think I have the right power adapter, and I sure as hell don't have five D batteries lying around. I'll probably head over to Frys tomorrow and buy some batteries.

Been a while since I've been to Savers. I popped in today and found some really exciting stuff. First time I've ever been there and had to go get a cart to hold all the finds.
Grabbed some reel to reel tapes for future recording, the Warcraft II expansion, and Magix Music Maker (I don't even have a PS2, but it looked interesting) and thought I was doing quite good. Then I came across the Beta cleaning cassette, the projector, and the Casio keyboard. I was in heaven. There was also a boxed Commodore datasette for $10, but I passed on it because I already have one and the box was really janky and taped to hell and back again.
Everything came out to be about $36.-

That Talking Computron looks wicked awesome.

This is actually a really great opportunity for me to test out my new capture device. I'll see if I can't get a bunch of scores submitted this week.

I think finding any NEC console for $25 is a steal.

I still need to get screws for my Atari 520STfm I bought at the flea market several months ago. What's with all these Atari's with their screws removed?
One of these days I'll get around to buying screws for all these wayward computers, but knowing myself it probably won't happen for a while.
-
After I test them all I'm going to decide on whether or not I want to keep all of them. I want to try out Retrobrite on the yellowed one to give it a try, and there's one which doesn't have any screws holding it together, so I'll probably keep it around for parts and whatnot. That's all I have planned at the moment.

Here's an unexpected find! Last night I got drunk with my best mate. I woke up this morning much, much earlier than he did, so I hopped on the computer to kill time. I hadn't been on Craigslist in a while, so I went on and searched for 'Atari'. Bingo. What came up was this lot of three 800XLs, 1050 floppy drive, 1030 modem, cables, a few carts, and a small selection of floppy disks with boring stuff like 'dad' and 'home filing program' written on them. It had been listed the night before, so I knew I still had a chance. I quickly composed an email, and waited. Long story short: I was the only person to have emailed her at that point and I got everything for $25.

Not exactly a 'thrift' find, but I just bought this lot from a good friend of mine for ten bucks. Total.
That's a friend to hold onto and never let go.

Fridays at my flea market are really hit or miss. I either find nothing whatsoever, or multiple items I've been searching for for months, if not years. Today was the latter.
Seganet DC keyboard: $3
PXL-2000 camcorder: $12
Hey You Pikachu complete: $5
Superpad 64 Plus controller: $1
I'm most excited about the PXL-2000 and the DC keyboard. I've been keeping my open, hoping I'd find either one of those for about two years now, and today I found both of them. Same seller even, so I was able to negotiate the price a bit more.
Edit: My friend also gave me a Mario Paint cartridge, a SNES mouse, and the mouse pad last night, but I don't have a picture. He's trying to start a Mario Paint collective.

My understanding is that the Xbox controller pinout is similar to a USB port, albeit with a change in shape. Would it be possible to make that light gun compatible with a home computer? Long shot, but I gotta wonder about these things.
(It'd probably make more sense to just use a Wiimote and a Bluetooth connection...)
From my understanding the Xbox controller is more or less exactly the same as USB. There's a little information on it here if you want to alter your controller to be a permanent USB controller. What I would recommend, though, is this little converter, so that you don't have to sacrifice an Xbox controller. I bought a couple of them and they work great. Now you can use the same controller for your Xbox and your PC.

25$ at value village, best find Iv had there in a while, though its not really a "find" as I have 3 friends who work there and let me know when stuff shows up, though they don't work in pricing, so while I get a heads up, I never get breaks on prices, Id say still works out for the best.
Is that one of the limited edition PS2s which were limited to 666 units per colour?
-
Yeah. We're going to cover as much as possible. If someone wants to contribute home computer mods or repairs no one will stop them.
We could actually probably do with some more computer-related material since it had such a large gaming scene unto itself.

Went to a flea market today, there was far more Atari/classic gaming stuff than I expected. Most of it was common and priced too high but it was good to see anyway. I ended up buying Snakes Revenge and Fester's Quest for the NES for $3 each. Also picked up a DVD of "The Room" for $2.
You're going to love that The Room DVD.

I'm also involved with this. So far things have been going great, with different people posting quality pictures of console motherboards and whatnot. We're hoping we can get this thing to be a valuable resource for anyone who is foraying into the world of console repair and modification.

Man, that Atari Video Music is one of the best finds I've ever seen. I've been wanting one of those ever since I found out about them.

I stopped at Savers today and bought a couple old Windows games. X-Men Cartoon Maker and Mario Teaches Typing 2. They were $1.99 a piece.
I also stopped by the flea market this morning and found some really cool stuff. I passed on a portable Betamax play because I already have two players, this one was $20, and it requires a proprietary AC adapter, which wasn't included.
I also passed on a CED player. Someone had a player and about 25 discs, but they were asking $5 for each disc, so I didn't bother asking about the player.
What I did find which I'm excited about is a Hitachi portable VCR with a 5" LCD screen. It came in a carrying case and had all the manuals, adapters (except the DC cable), the battery charger, two batteries, and the original sale receipt (which I love finding when I buy something). The batteries didn't work when I bought it, so I was able to talk them down to $15 instead of the original $35. When I got it home I started charging a battery, but it kept shutting off and the power light would blink (which means it's 'overheated'. Every time it would do that I would unplug it for about ten seconds and plug it back in and it would start charging again for a while. Eventually it stopped shutting off and I was able to get the battery to charge fully (about an hour and a half).
And now it works! I can't wait to use this baby.

That Computerized Arcade is mighty sexy.

I'd never even heard of Lost Treasure or Pay Day before, but I'm always looking for new board games to try, and you can't really go wrong with free games. I still need to have a game night so I can give the past couple games I've gotten a try as well.

I had a pretty good day at the flea market today with my brother who's on leave from the Army for about a month.
Sailor Moon VHS was $1. I bought it because I find the title humourous and because one of my friends likes Sailor Moon.
The Orange Box was $1. I felt like taking a $1 gamble and lost. The Key is already being used by someone. Oh well.
Warcraft III expansion was $1. I don't really care for Warcraft III, but I figured I might as well get the expansion if it was only a dollar.
Random VCD was $1. I bought it only because the words PIRATED COPY are printed right on the front and back labels. I thought it was funny.
Rob-B-Hood VCD was $2. I'm a big fan of Jackie Chan's non-American films, and I've been wanting to see Rob-B-Hood for a while. Unlike most VCDs I've come across, this one has an option for English subtitles.
Frogger board game was $3. It appears to have all the pieces. Frogger is one of my favourite arcade games, so I'm pretty excited to have the board game now.
Pay Day and Lost Treasure were free. One of the vendors who I bought some spicy brown mustard from saw my Frogger board game and led me to another vendor who had some old games. It was near the end of the day, so he was going to throw them away. I went through the games and found two games which look interesting and which I think are complete and he told me I could have them for free because he was going to throw them out anyway. I'm going to remember this guy, because that was a total bro gesture, for lack of other words.

Saw a bunch of Wii U game, sealed for $49.99 at Goodwill. It all had a bunch of Target clearance tag all over it, guessing the game is a real stinker and is being dumped at a loss already.
Is $49.99 really a loss? I don't own any of the newer systems and haven't payed attention to the prices. What do the games usually go for?

Anyone on the forum other than me from AR? Am I just too inept at finding decent thrifts to haunt? Went to a newish one and got the same thing as always... whats a vidya game?
Locally owned thrift stores and small church/charity run shops tend to be better than the larger chains, at least in terms of prices. I've found selection to be pretty bad everywhere. If I didn't have the flea market I probably wouldn't collect at all.
-
I don't know if all of them are like this, or if I'm just special, but check to see if there isn't something exciting on the inside of the cover art sleeve.
Nothing. Looks like you're just special.

I was in the more Asian part of town yesterday and picked up some fun things at a Goodwill.
Austin Powers and Snatch are VCDs. Snatch looks pretty good, but Austin Powers looks like ass.
Fargo on DVD because I want the special features (I already have it on VHS and Laserdisc).
Wallace & Gromit is a Korean DVD. Region 3, so I don't have any way to watch it at the moment.
Tommy Nitro's Karate Adventure is a still sealed VHS. I bought it because it's probably really bad and I like that sort of thing.
The tie has cameras on it. I think it looks cool.
They also had two Laserdisc players, but wanted $38 a piece, and I'm not so Laserdisc crazy that I need five players.
How do I post an image from an external size and have it not appear full size on this board? I see other people do it and I can't seem to figure it out and always end up using the gallery feature.

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
in Classic Console Discussion
Posted · Edited by MagnaFarce
Last night my friend texted me and asked me if I wanted to go to the flea market this morning. It had been a while since my last excursion, so I was all for it. Had some really exciting finds! Listed in the order I bought them.
Children's Discovery System in a really ratty box with three cartridges and some paperwork. The battery compartment is fused shut from corrosion, so I'll have to go at it and see if I can't fix it up. Got it all for $5.
Two N64 rumble packs and two memory cards, all in this box for $5. I've been thinking about getting a rumble pack for a while, so this is pretty nice. The transparent one has a bit of corrosion in the battery compartment, but it looks like an easy fix.
Burnable Laserdisc. Exciting stuff for a Laserdisc collector like myself since I don't see them very often. Unfortunately, it's not a blank disc, as it has a recording of some first grade classroom on it.
Commodore power supply from same vendor. $4 for both, talked down from $6.
These are all from the same vendor, but I put them in two separate pictures because the 5200 is so freakin' huge. The Atari 5200 console had no controllers, power supply, or switch box. I bought it for $5 after I talked them down from $15. The disc cam is something I've wanted for a while because I consider it an interesting part of consumer camera history, and the Dreamcast controller was picked up on a whim, both for $1 each.
Three boxes of double density floppy disks, perfect for my Atari 520STfm. All three for $4, talked down from $6. There were fourteen more boxes, all sealed, but I was getting low on cash and didn't feel like I really needed many more than three boxes.
Another good find my friend had was an M-Audio MIDI controller for $15. We're going to custom paint it for when his band does live shows.
