  1. Hmm are you sure you dug through all the box? You seem to be missing a couple of gifts. I guess old timers could have kicked in ;) but I'm pretty sure there were two more gifts in that pack.

    Oh shit. Better go rifle through the Burning Pile next to the fireplace.

    EDIT: There were four things I missed. I guess I got too excited after finding that heart valve and forgot to thrust my hand into the unknown.

    This is great! I only had two Genesis games before this, and I didn't even like one of them. I'm excited to give them all a try! I guess I also have one more reason to get a Lynx. :D

    MrBland, I salute you. You went far beyond what I ever expected. You have brightened my day and I hope your holiday season is a fantastic one. You are a wonderful human being.

    I missed these

  2. I see everything either going to a download only format or a cloud-based format. I also don't see how three major systems are going to maintain support for much longer. They all seem to be blending together and none of them are really unique any more, especially the 360 and the PS3. That being said, I do feel like the console makers are trying to be more unique using gimicky things like 3D and motion control/touch screens, but since all of them are doing it the uniqueness won't last. Of course, it doesn't really matter to me because I only really play games from Dreamcast/N64 on down. I sometimes like to play a shooter, and for that I'll whip out my original XBOX.

    If I had to pick one system I think would fail, I'd say whatever Nintendo has out. All they have going for them is their exclusive titles, but I don't think those will be able to keep their consoles going, especially when the non-exclusive titles can be played with better hardware on the PS3 and 360 (assuming the 360 hasn't gotten the RRoD).

    I don't foresee the future of gaming being very good, but that's probably just my pre-Christmas doom and gloom outlook on life and my general hatred of the cloud and download-only content.

  3. Woaaaaaaaaah! Here we go!

    I went out to get the mail today and I found a package with my name on it. No way, I thought. It's only been a few days. Yes way. My Rescue Ranger went way beyond the call of duty and spent $24.45 to ship my package so it would arrive before Christmas. That's dedication, and I bow before you.

    What's more, there was a nice handwritten card and all these nicely wrapped gifts inside which, when opened, revealed a whole slew of vinyl records which I don't have already. My 45 collection has always been lacking, and now I have a nice little stack of great 45s from amazing bands like The Talking Heads, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, and more! In addition to all the great music I received an Atari Lynx game. Now I have five games and no system, so I think I should look into getting a Lynx (no complaints here). I also received a baggie of candy (including Snickers Peanut Butter Bars, which I'd never tried before) and a mechanical heart valve (expired, but still fully functional, I've been assured).

    I want to thank my Rescue Ranger for doing this. It means a lot to me that you went through so much effort for someone you've never met. Thank you, and Merry Christmas (unless you don't celebrate Christmas, then it's Happy Holidays)!

    I have some photos below. I had to take them with my phone because my Mavica is at my friend's house and I was too impatient to wait, so the quality is probably kinda low. I don't know, I never use my phone's camera. Maybe they look okay.

  4. Please told me you bought this out of a 1978 Chevy van.

    Nope. I got them from some guy and his dad up in the Santa Cruz mountains who had stored them in one of their many sheds for years. They bought them from a record which was going out of business because they had an old station wagon with an 8 Track player, but it turned out that the player didn't work, so they stored them.

    The father had a great saying: You can never have too many sheds.

  5. I had a huge find this week. Again, it's not games related, but it's probably the biggest score I've ever gotten, so I'm going to post it.

    I found a lot of 2000 8 Tracks and several carrying cases for $80 on Craigslist. My buddy and I went halfsies on the lot and I walked away with a cool thousand tapes for $40. I'm going to use some of the more worthless tapes to experiment with recording on a reel to reel recorder, because I hear you can use 8 Track ribbon and it will work.

    If anybody wants 8 Tracks, I'm your guy.

  6. Not game related, but I was excited nonetheless. I was helping my sister clear out her roommate's garage so she could have a new dryer installed and she gave me a Sanyo VTC5000 Betamax recorder and a shoe box full of tapes which she had sitting around. Apparently it is in need of minor repair, so I guess I'll look at it when I'm doing repairs on my CED player and typewriter. It's the same model I already own, but with a different remote.

  7. I picked up an Atari 520ST at the flea market a while ago and I've been thinking about attempting to make some music using it, and now that finals are finally over I actually have time to do so. Do you have any tips or recommendations for someone who has no experience with the 520ST? I don't even know what program to start with, though I've been looking at Cubase as a possibility.

  8. ...imagine how many people put their actual WII in the trash thinking... "The new Wii plays the old games" you know it's happened more than once already. Hell morons with too much money microwave new Wii U systems. As a whole people are disappointing generally.

    I was with my mates at Denny's one afternoon and I ran into someone there who I knew from my old church. Somehow video games came up and he told us about how he had bought his kids a Wii, but they never used it, so he threw it away. There was this quick moment of complete deadness inside me after I heard that, and I guess my friends got the same feeling as well, because we were talking about it as soon as the guy had left. None of us even like the Wii, but having something like that just thrown in the trash seems so... wrong.

  9. I'm in a real dilemna (I prefer that spelling) with regards to this Secret Santa thing. On one hand, I hope my package arrives this weekend because I'm excited to see what I get, but on the other hand I have finals next week and I really hope I don't receive my package because I'll undoubtedly play with all the contents instead of studying.

    Woe is me.

  10. What does that even mean? You deny yourself the ability to play NES games because you don't like the physical appearance of the console? So you're gonna go through the headache of collecting imported famicom games because the system looks nicer? I don't even know what to say without sounding horribly insulting except that I don't understand why you chose classic gaming as a hobby.

    Chris

    I can understand that it doesn't make much sense, so let me attempt to explain my thought process. It's not that I go out of my way not to buy or play the NES, because I would buy one if I found it in the wild at a good price. However, if I want to play NES games I figure I will get an adapter to play them on the Famicom because not only is the Famicom more visually pleasing to me, it is less prone to failure as the front-loading NES is and has the added benefit of having peripherals that were released only in Japan.

    As a reply to your last question, I don't consider classic gaming to be my hobby. My hobby is finding, collecting, and using old technologies and is not exclusive to video games. I am interested in audio and video technology and video games just happen to be a very interesting part of audio/video technology history.

    It may seem like a dick move for me to be collecting systems when there are ardent gamers out there that would get a lot of use out of the systems, and that's one reason I don't buy consoles unless I know it will be used by either me or my friends. Nearly every console I've bought I have gotten from the flea market where I know the people selling them don't appreciate them or even know what they are and are just trying to flip a dollar; if someone doesn't buy the console they'll literally toss it in a bin with whatever else they're trying to sell and manhandle it back into their truck. I consider me having them to be much better than those people having them.

    I don't play very many games, but the Famicom is one of the only systems that I feel I would actually go out of my way to purchase because I actually do want to use it for playing games. I hope this all makes sense.

  11. Its like saying ground beef steak & a burger aren't the same thing.

    I think it's more akin to disagreeing with the belief that a beef pot pie and a hamburger are the same because they share a common ingredient. It's like saying, sure, shooters and FPS have the common element of shooting in them, but they should be labeled differently, just as a beef pie and a hamburger should be labeled differently even though they share a common element.

    In the end, though, I personally don't even care. You can go on calling them shooters and I won't think anything of it. I'm not big on crucifying people for not using the common lingo because in the end it doesn't matter and I think it's refreshing having people with opposing views. If you think anything with shooting in it can be called a 'shooter', power to you. Don't change for other people.

  12. I didn't plan on going to any thrift stores today, but I found myself near a Savers and I had to stop in. I found some cool stuff.

    Four Famicom games: $14

    * Teal: Puss in Boots: An Adventure Around the World in 80 Days

    * Yellow: B-Wings

    * Blue: Legend of Kage

    * Pink: Wrecking Crew

    (I don't have a Famicom, but I couldn't pass it up. I never see these in the wild.)

    Nox CD: $1.99

    Diablo CD: $3.99

    Not Game related, but a find I am excited about:

    Olivetti Underwood Lettera 33 Typewriter: $6.99

  13. I had an alright day at the flea market yesterday. I came across a Sega Master System (my first time seeing one in the wild) and an Atari 2600 Jr. (ditto), but I passed on them because of damage/no peripherals. I also bought a really terrible looking plug-n-play, but it doesn't work.

    At least I found a couple of good VHS tapes.

  14. I love buying things and finding discs already inside them! That's how I got my first 3DO game. I bought the console at the flea market at the flea market and, wo and behold, Gex was inside as well. That art gallery disc sounds pretty cool. I would love to have something like that.

    For Laserdiscs I recommend buying the weird Japanese karaoke discs. They're always super cheap and are usually worth a laugh. I've got a bootleg one of a bunch of MIDI-based Beatles songs, complete with typos in the lyrics. One of my favourite Laserdiscs.
