  1. i finally found a laserdisc player at the local gw!! 10 bucks, and i also found monopoly CIB for the sms for 2 bucks it also had 1 of the old posters in it in mint shape no rips stains or folds!!

You're going to love that Laserdisc player. I bought my first one at the flea market for $10 thinking I would buy a handful of movies. Now I have three players and around 150 discs. It's addicting.

  2. Would you be willing to sell either of those? I especially want that Atari ST due to mine being a few thousands miles away and broken.

Sorry, I plan on keeping them. I've been wanting some classic computers for a while and I just found them. If you want I could go back to the flea market tomorrow and see if the two people with computers are there again. The person I bought the Commodore from had another boxed one as well, but I don't think it had a power source, and the guy I bought the Atari from also had an Apple ][, a Vic-20, and a Tandy (if memory serves correctly). I'm not sure if his computers had all the hookups.

  3. Amazing day at the flea market today! I hadn't been for a while, but I sold two typewriters the other day and decided to splurge.

The loot, in the order I found them:

Kodak Super-8 camera and Tele Disc camera: $5

    Stereo CED player: $15

    Boxed Commodore 64 [Refurbished]: $15

    Atari 520ST lot: $10

I always find the best things on Wednesdays and Fridays because that's when all the one-time sellers show up (it's cheaper to sell on those days).

    CED Player

    Atari 520ST Lot + Trackball

    Camera Lot

Refurbished Commodore 64 Computer [in box] 1/3

Refurbished Commodore 64 Computer [in box] 2/3

Refurbished Commodore 64 Computer [in box] 3/3

(I'm still trying to figure out how to post images correctly)

  4. LOL! There are some things that it seems worth brawling over in the thrift shop.

"I want a video player for my kids. How about that big black one right there? Does it play games, too?"

"Hey, you with the laserdisc player, PUT THAT DOWN!"

    "But, I..."

    *BIFF! POW!* *sirens*

"Hey, honey, I got 30 years for assault, but I managed to grab another rare gaming console! And it doubles as a blunt force weapon to boot!"

"OK, sweetheart. I think if I sell this, what's it, this Halcyon thingy you got, the proceeds will get you out on bail."

Is this just a great work of fiction or did you actually at one point come across a Halcyon? I would kill to find a Halcyon in the wild.

  5. Goodwill has outlet stores where you can "fill a bag" for a buck. They are obscure and have strange hours. I've never been to one. But that's my first guess.

I had no idea those existed! Why, if I could find one in the bay area I might be able to find stuff at reasonable prices. Goodwill has really gone downhill in my area in the last three or four years. I don't even bother going anymore.

  6. Pretty good day at my new local thrift. Normally Savers thrift stores suck ass when it comes to electronics and media, but this new one is actually really good.

    The Load:

    LPs: 99¢ each

    ELO - Face the Music

    LDs: 99¢ each

    Circuit City Program: November 1998

    Circuit City Program: January 1999

    Japanese Karaoke LD

Raiders of the Lost Ark [Widescreen]

    Temple of Doom [Widescreen]

    Last Crusade [Widescreen]

    Electronics:

    Panasonic DVL-919 LaserDisc/DVD player: $19.99

They also had a Sega Saturn, but were asking for, get this, $59.99. They also had a couple Sega Saturn games for $2.99 a piece, but they were all generic sport titles that have no appeal to me. All in all, a good thrift store.

The LD player does seem to have a skipping problem, but I'm pretty sure it's just built up gunk on the laser guides. I'll open it up tomorrow and see if I can't get it to work.

  7. I had an amazing day at the flea market today! I guess Thursdays are one of the biggest days at my local flea market. Who would know?

VHS Camcorder in a hard case with battery charger and cables: $10

Bram Stoker's Dracula and Jurassic Park for the Sega CD: $4

Case for Sonic CD (no booklet, no disc): Free

    Sega Genesis controller: $0.50

Ten sealed blank Betamax tapes: $7

The Omega Virus board game: $5

And here's the big one. The one that made my day:

    Mattel Intellivision: $8

I've always wanted an Intellivision and now I've found one in the wild I can die a happy man.

  8. Great day at the flea market yesterday!

Four Atari Lynx games (Xybots, Power Factor, Tournament Cyberball [x2]), still sealed but with crushed boxes. $4

Suspect 5.25" floppy game box and feelies (no discs, damn). $1

Aiwa AM-F70 Minidisc recorder with power adaptor and four new 74 minute discs. $17

Two CEDs (Acadamy Award Winners Animated Short FIlms, The Neverending Story). $2

Toshiba HD-A30 HD DVD player (No remote or power cable, but the cable is easy to find). $12.50

My friend also got a hold of a Bell & Howell 16mm camera. $2

  9. I've had some good finds recently at my flea market and at a thrift store in Minnesota while I was visiting.

    Sony Mavica FD200 Floppy Disc Camera [2002] - $15

I actually bought this on Ebay because someone on Atariage had a post about theirs and it interested me enough to actually buy one immediately instead of just keeping my eye open for one. I got it complete with the box, all the documentation, and a battery charger. The battery I got was dead, but the seller is sending me a new one.

On a related note, I got some floppies on Craigslist from an "socialist, anarchist, communist" lesbian, which was interesting.

    Cassette to 8-Track Adaptor [1975?] - $2

Between my friend and I we have four 8-track players, none of which work. Still, I couldn't pass up this adaptor. I had no idea these existed, though it makes sense that they do.

    Nishika N8000 (3D 35mm camera) [1989] - $5

I'll probably hack this thing and see what I can make it into. I really don't care much for 3D and there's so many of these cameras around that I don't mind accidentally ruining the thing in the process. It'll be a fun new project.

    3M Stocks & Bonds Board Game [1964] - $1

I have no idea how this game plays, but it was a dollar and had everything in the box except the piece of chalk. I mostly got this so my friend can decorate his room with it because he really digs displaying old things from the sixties and seventies.

On top of all that I was able to find a few groovy bell bottoms and turtlenecks while in Minnesota.

  10. I guess in Bakersfield the thieves are a'plenty because almost everything is taped up or behind the counters (at least the Goodwills). I have opened up so many items sold at Goodwill only to find many (or most) parts/pieces missing it makes my head spin and then glad I didn't purchase it. Only other thought is that goodwill is nefarious and they are hoping to get top $$$ for the broken shit they try to pass off as "working" and "in good condition" based on the amount of $$$ they try to gaffle from you (maybe it's just in Bakersfield).

It's the same deal in San Jose. I always get the inkling that a lot of the discs at the local flea markets are stolen and I attribute this to why the local Goodwills are extremely protective of their disc-based media.

  11. Also notable about this Goodwill visit; the first "hot" GW employee I have ever seen was my cashier.

I didn't think it was humanly possible for Goodwill to have attractive employees! It seems like all the ones I go to are manned by middle-aged minority workers that look like they're only working because it will pay for their next fix.

  12. The image quality is great but small only 640x480. I bought mine way back and loved it because back in the day, I could read the floppy on either a Mac, Linux or Windows computer... kind of like a thumb drive nowadays... they couldn't do much better on resolution since you were limited to the 1.44mb on the floppy. Though the 14x optical zoom made up for the lower pixels and I was quite suprised at the quality of the video mode.

That doesn't look bad at all! I'm going to look into getting one of these so I can finally have a camera to take with me places.

  13. I picked up an old Sharp pc-7200 at the flea market today for three dollars. It powers up and the screen displays text, but I am still unsure as to how well it works since I can't seem to find any 5.25" floppy disks around the house. I'll have to keep looking in the attic and the shed out back tomorrow to see if I can't find a couple to try out.

    sharp%20PC-7200.jpg

    Not my picture.

  14. Nice. I got some 80s laser discs today at a yard sale for .50 each, like Tron, ESB, Raiders,Flight of the Navigator.

I used buy LaserDiscs whenever I came across them, but now I've got more than a hundred and I've only seen a handful of them. Now I hold myself back and only buy the discs I really, really want, or the ones that look so incredibly bad that they'd be funny.

  16. Not a thrift find, but definitely an unexpected surprise. I was helping my friend and his roommate move out the other day and they gave me a Fairchild Chanel F and about a dozen games to hold on to for a while. This thing is in supreme condition! The console has a protective plastic cover, still has the original receipts and manuals and hasn't been played since the late eighties, so I'll probably have this thing on my hands for a long time. I'd post pictures, but I don't have a camera.

  17. ....man, I've been listening to and watching this track for days now, lol...something about lamenting to a trash can that I somehow can identify with, lol. I ended up watching the whole thing on youtube...in a weird way, it's depressing! LOL! But catchy.

Isn't it? I found out about it through Rocky Horror, but I've gotten to a point where I find Shock Treatment superior to Rocky Horror. I enjoy the songs more, I really dig the clothing they wear, and I love how the reality television watching masses are portrayed.

  18. I might check that out! Maybe! I have to be honest, maybe I wont! Picky film watcher here (so_annoying!). If we lived close, I would come round and watch it with you though. Assuming I was invited! :)

If you were within a reasonable geographic proximity to me I would definitely invite you over to watch it. I go to great lengths to share it with people I befriend.

Give that bit a try. It's one of my favourite songs from the film. I just love how they're looking toward material things being advertised to them to better their lives.

But, on the actual topic of rabid sports fans; I never got into watching sports and never quite understood why people got so passionate about watching other people exercise. I can understand being really into playing sports, just as one could get very into playing video games, but just sitting there and watching other people do it is odd to me. I admit I have had a history of watching televised South Korean Starcraft tournaments, but even then it was for observing strategies and not for the sole purpose of rooting a certain player on. The only explanation I've figured over the years of watching my own father go from not really caring about sports to becoming a devoted fan of our local Minor League Baseball team is that there is a sense of community with the other fans that makes one feel welcome and wanted. It's something that people can bond over when they would otherwise have nothing to bond over and have little in common with the majority of society.
