Does anyone have a Danny Galaga rapid fire kit theyd want to sell me? Or, even better for the community, is there a schematic that could be applied / adapted? Many many years ago when I made my Jag arcade stick/rotary I had plans to include a rapid fire mode for button B, even going so far as to draw up example schematics using a 555 timer chip. I couldnt quite nail the design, and I know that my applied knowledge of such things is much worse now than it ever was then Im feeling the desire to gut my existing arcade stick and / or remake one. Having a professional looking arcade stick with 8 buttons, keypad, a spinner, and rapid fire (preferably with an adjustable pot) would be the best thing ever As an aside, I wonder how much people would pay for such a thing lol.

Possible to adapt Eladdin Joysticks for Jaguar Use?

That Pelican stick looks great. Somewhat similar to mine, but mine is completely home made and a bit shoddy on the woodwork side of things Does it have keypad functionality somehow? -

Hacking a Jagpad to make a dedicated arcade stick isn't too hard. If you can solder (even at an amateur level like me) it's relatively straightforward. Hacking a prebuilt one like this ( https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-Pandora-Box-6s-1388-in-1-Retro-Video-Games-Double-Stick-Arcade-Console-Light/223140527663?hash=item33f4363e2f:g:IHwAAOSw8W1bl4Sq:rk:2:pf:0) wouldn't be too bad an idea, especially if you can navigate the wire spaghetti in order to keep its originally designed functionality as a bonus. -
This makes so much sense. I too have it on Midways Arcade Treasures 2 on Xbox and it's not too bad at all. Fun...dumb fun, but still fun. I've been in the 'maybe' camp since release, but I've never managed to justify it to myself if the controls are awkward. It wouldn't be too hard to wire up a dual arcade stick by hacking a Jag pad...just wire up the second stick to the relevant buttons / number pad keys (assuming each of the four main directions are actually mapped somewhere). I imagine it could / should work well, but it's quite a lot of effort for a single game. If I ever have the money, the time, and the inclination (three things that rarely line up lol) I'll do it for a bit of fun. I'm involved in running retro gaming museums at numerous conventions here in Aus, so it would definitely get used there...people would probably ask for two of them lol. Thinking about it though, i'd probably get more playtime making a dual stick for Jag Llamatron...hmmm...

Do you have direct links for them? They're still not coming up in the search
-
Even though I'm able to search demozoo.org for those, the lack of context (and relationship to the Jag or not) doesn't help. The JagNES invitro comes up with a video, but not sure if it's Jag or NES, or both, or...? The others don't come up with anything yet.

Iron Soldier is *usually* available for a reasonable price on eBay or elsewhere online. It's an oft overlooked gem in the Jaguar library, usually left out of top five / ten lists when it should be. A must have.

Getting the jRISCS to 'emulate' the rest of the Neo Geo is impractical and likely impossible as several people have suggested. Trying to emulate or simulate the Neo Geo and dump its screen 60 times per second just wouldn't happen. Could the Jag natively throw around as many sprites as some Neo Geo games? Sure, at least from what I've seen. With RAM and ROM limitations (just for starters, never mind bus speed and game logic) the Jag likely would struggle with some Neo Geo games. But I won't speculate beyond that because personal, work, study/research, and business reasons prevent me from diving into RB+ (for the next few months, after that who knows... ). But I don't presume to know better than people who actually know. What I'd do (and suggest anyone with more time than me do) is to grab some sprites from here https://www.spriters-resource.com/neo_geo_ngcd/, then find the sounds, and then code something up in RB+. Anything. Rather than speculate, go do it. Much more productive than telling those who are intimately familiar with the system what it can or cannot do. If you can put together complex music using mod trackers philipj, you'll cope with Basic programming easily. I'm far from a great coder (mostly self-taught), yet I teach it, and have done so for nearly 20 years. If I can, anyone can. I hope you stick around VintageGamer74. Some of us might be a bit testy at times, but it's likely because some of these discussions (this one in particular) have been going on for over twenty years, often with the most vocal people being the ones who haven't coded on the Jag (or on anything). JagChris, calling people clowns, people who actually code for the system and work within it's parameters and limitations, doesn't seem particularly useful. I don't know what your beef if, but as someone who reads the forum every few days I've noted a bit of a 'tone' directed at certain people in some of your posts. I could be reading it wrong, but I don't think I am. I'm not the forum police (and wouldn't want to be) but back in the day we had a saying..."take it to PM"...it was usually salient advice and a better way to sort out problems than not so subtle digs that derail threads.

Brand New Atari Jaguar Pro Controllers- For Sale!
skip replied to Starwander's topic in Atari Jaguar
I ordered a couple of pairs, one for me and one for a local friend. I used a different email address, but got on it as quick as I could. Quite possibly even keen for another pair once things have settled at my end. Some was discussed over email, but thought I'd post here just to confirm. Great service and good to chat about my plans over email -
I was going to say, the following games unboxed can/should be available for $10-$40 on the AA marketplace, eBay, Craigslist, Gumtree, or similar (seriously, ignore the high prices that speculators keep trying it on for): Iron Soldier,Tempest 2000, Zool 2, Val dIsere, Raiden, Flip Out, Pinball Fantasies, Pitfall, Zoop....and if youre lucky Wolf 3D, Doom, Attack of the amutant Penguins, Super Burnout, Flashback and more... ...youll have a lot more fun with the above games than pontificating about joypads

"Jaytrax"Great Synthesizer & Mod Tracker / Sort-of Jaguar Related (Sort-of)

With all the walls of text, I am still trying to work out whether your song was included in Protector SE or not...? Sincerely, it is all a bit confusing, perhaps try to be a little more concise or to the point (I mean no disrespect here, I tend to write too much at times too). Some of this historical detail may be better suited to a blog or articles...I think there is a blog facility here on AA...it could be linkable from the thread...again, just a thought. FWIW, I like some of the tunes youve posted. I too created at least one track, possibly two, for Protector SE but never submitted them. Theyre long lost now, but one day Ill attempt to recreate them using modern software. -
Good catch on the 789 vs 123...confirmed brain fart on my part oops!

I did something similar well over 20 years back (obviously not using an X-Arcade trackball unit ). It's relatively easy - soldering of two wires to the microswitches and the buttons on the PCB, mounting of the numberpad in the box (or using another keypad or a limited number of buttons for views, but that'd involve more soldering rather than using the original), and of course the rotary conversion. Soldering and the conversion took only a few hours (and I'm not very good at it)...I spent more time making the box and painting it (which didn't work out great lol). An X-Arcade trackball would be the *perfect* housing for a Jaguar rotary / spinner. I've found a reasonably cheap source locally and actually got one just last week. I'm actually tempted to get another to do this...thanks for the idea

The pro buttons are hard wired to the equivalent number pad buttons 1, 2, 3, 4, 6. Games that are enhanced can (but not often) have a pro-controller option that re-maps to the software's wishes. I can only think of Defender 2000 classic mode and Primal Rage that have interchangeable settings between standard and pro. Check out the other threads and also the manuals for Jag games on this site for a full / developing list.
-
+1 for AvP with the ProController, back in the day I greatly preferred it even though you couldn't strafe with the shoulder buttons. Classic Defender in Defender 2000 mimics the arcade controls somewhat with the Pro. https://atariage.com/Jaguar/manuals/Defender2000/m_Defender2000_12.jpg

Brand New Atari Jaguar Pro Controllers- For Sale!
skip replied to Starwander's topic in Atari Jaguar
My advice...get Doom, avp, Wolfenstein, Missile Command 3D, Iron Soldier, Defender 2000, Primal Rage, and more Im probably forgetting, including homebrews. Even if they arent specifically Pro-Controller enhanced, they do benefit from it. Having two Pro-Controllers isnt even a bad thing. Like any pads they may end up breaking down over time. One of my Pros is a bit finicky with one of the buttons...now I have two more originals and two of these on order in case any do break down Additionally, they could serve as a great base to build the ultimate arcade parts joystick with 8 full size buttons and a number pad plus a spinner if desired. I did that over 20 years ago by gutting an original controller and the soldering and wires required involved some rather convoluted and messy positioning of wires. Using a pro pcb would be much simpler... -
Atari Jaguar Composite Monitor Video Cable Broke.
skip replied to Atariboy2600's topic in Atari Jaguar
It's possibly (likely?) solderable, but it could get a bit messy as you may need to cut into the yellow plastic. Alternatively you could (possibly) get a yellow RCA male plug from any electronics store (probably $1 or $2), cut off the existing one, and replace it with the new one. The store may (or may not) be able to do it for you for a small fee. 'New' composite cables (some are original, some aftermarket): https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=atari+jaguar+composite&_sacat=0 A new aftermarket composite and S-Video cable which is reasonably good value for what it is: https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/595809384/atari-jaguar-s-videocomposite-combo?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=atari%20jaguar%20composite&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1&more_colors=1 There are a few other sellers out there who make composite cables. Google is your friend. -
To be fair to Jeff lashing out at the Space Giraffe review in the official XBox mag where they gave it 3/10, the person who reviewed it clearly had zero idea that it was not Tempest (and should / could be played differently rather than grind through the levels by limping through) despite it being reasonably clear that 'bulling' was the new game mechanic that elevates the game above the level of just another Tempest clone. That, and the chaotic graphics / sounds actually being part of the core gameplay, makes this one of his best games by far (IMHO) despite it being quite polarising, which is absolutely understandable. After all these years I'll go back to it occasionally and still get 'stuck' when it gets too difficult. But that's a major part of what differentiates old school arcade type games vs newer games...you don't necessarily get to win by continuing to play or grind through, you actually have to be 'good' at twitch gameplay to succeed. As far as him riffing on Tempest too much, that's a somewhat fair call, but there's been several dozen of his games on Pocket PC, PC, Mac, iOS, Android, PS4 etc that aren't Tempest-like over the last 25 years, but I guess he's made enough financial success on the Tempest-like games to keep going. I personally can't wait for the new VR enabled Minotaur Arcade series on PS4, Gridrunner and Goat Up were the most played Llamasoft games on my phone when they were first released

Or, perhaps, these are just little kids who don't want to see an animal die (albeit an animated one). Not all dark humour is an acquired taste. I've always personally love disgusting gross out stuff - movies (Peter Jackson's classic Braindead and Bad Taste are favourites), over the top 8 and 16 bit games (Splatterhouse, Duke Nukem 3D etc) - but some people just don't get along with 'horror' or even things that approach "yucky" topics. Dark humour *can* be an acquired taste, but some will just never get along with it. And that's okay. As far as "snowflakes" and "this generation", I'll mostly leave that well alone...but let's just say that although broad generalisations may have a little basis in truth (as a teacher of 20 years I have, at times, whinged about 'kids these days'), such generalisations about may actually be more reflective of those who keep repeating the phrase / implications...with "snowflake" being the most overused recent example from evidence I've seen lately. I'll stop there though, because no politics. Regarding the game and the one-button-click style of play, I have quite enjoyed and watched with interest the evolving genre of "clickers" on mobile (very much to my surprise, I initially thought the concept was incredibly stupid, and I still am more than a bit cynical toward them). Endurance games, dungeon crawling games, even games that involve a tiny degree of skill have grown out of these simple clickers. Of course most of them are monetised with IAPs (not that I've sunk a single cent into them, no way), and there's the rub in this case - is there a way to make this game less repetitive given the nature of its input? I personally think yes there is (purchasing items earned within the game, having new skins that give better abilities, having a "hook" that makes the player want to replay the game), but it's a hard thing to do and have designed in, let alone code it and create the assets. Unfortunately I've only played this briefly before I upgraded my computer, and now Virtual Jaguar won't work on in :-/ I'll be sure to put it on my Skunk in the next month or so (once a lot of building work is finished at my house, I don't even know where it is at the moment lol). I'm sure I'll think of suggestions for additions I am intrigued because, as I suggested earlier, I think that such simple games can have a hook that somehow brings people back into such games.
-
I could be wrong (in fact I hope Im wrong lol) but I dont think the Gravis stick worked in analogue mode for the Jag. I wonder (hope) if the details for analogue input are out there. I vaguely remember seeing the info somewhere. Following from that, I think the best way to do it would be to have an adapter that allows a PC (or N64 maybe) pad/stick plugged in as well as a Jag controller because, even with mapping of the fire and other main buttons, players would need access to the number pad. Beyond that, cannabilising a PC joystick and a Jag pad using an arcade joystick box or similar to accomodate the lot wouldnt be massively difficult, it would just involve a lot of wires and soldering. It would be a fun little project, and I for one would love to play Battlesphere with an analogue stick, but the value proposition vs time and difficulty to get it working would need to be weighed up. Additionally, is analogue input supported by default, or is a code required? I cant remember that either lol.

This looks great Very impressive. Can I add a +1 for multiplayer. Not only is it an absolutely perfect fit for this game, it'd probably mean most people would end up purchasing two copies of the game (more income, more money to charity ). Perhaps a 'pack' of two at a slightly discounted cost ($5 or something nominal). Anyway, at the very least I personally would purchase a ROM, and probably a hard copy though I'd rather purchase two if multiplayer was a thing

Ill admit that I havent played this version in years, but I have it on the Xbox. What were the problems with it? I was reasonably impressed with the fact that it was obviously miles better than the ST and PC ports. I think the controls were challenging, but I remember the framrate being good. Im tempted to bust out the old Xbox and have a go at it over the weekend but I probably wont have time in the immediate future.

Johannes Graf (Atari) – Interview - Iron Soldier 3 & Jag Questions
skip replied to Adriano Arcade's topic in Atari Jaguar
I think there once was a direct video comparison online, probably YouTube, but I can't find it anymore. I'm pretty sure I'm not going mad here as I swear I watched it closely at the time, but I could be mistaken after all these years. I do, however, have both versions, and plan on doing a short video comparison in the future. Other than the lack of dual-shock control, the Nuon iteration of the game is generally the more favourable of the two. On the good side, the PS1 version isn't particularly expensive and worth getting (published by Telegames IIRC, not sure if they sell it directly but it's obtainable on eBay) if you're a fan of the series. -
I recently discovered a sealed one amongst a job-lot auction I won. I almost feel guilty having three Pro Controllers now...almost It's something I don't really want to sell, but if the prices really are that crazy and the reproduction ones are as good as the originals, I'd consider it.

All the slinging aside, Jeff you now ignored the simple question / comment yet again from myself (multiple times), Iachoneous, and now Sporadic: why do you ship buggy games and then have to go through the process of fixing them? Its a horrible waste of time, energy, and money. Never mind a bad look and the fact that its just not the done thing with cartridge devs for old systems to always do revisions for every title. Its obvious that hit detection should be an easy fix (I teach teenagers how to code and its not even an issue other than shifting some x or y values in under a minute) yet is a problem seemingly randomly (and explosions / blood that are offset too). Are these values hard coded on a per zombie basis rather than in a function or similar? If so it seems like a huge fix and very inefficient. I see a post on AJF with another sold with box etc. I also notice you havent informed them that (a) the game isnt final and (b) from what Ive read in this thread its extremely short. That seems a bit disingenuous. Ill bow out of this thread now. What should be a fun hobby for us all, especially with new games that are promising and show great potential, is tainted with the inevitable rushed Wave 1 game with bugs (polished manual and box though!) and selective answering / response to questions and constructive suggestions. What a shame, albeit not an unforeseen one.
