  1. Can anyone say if they actually ever really learn about dodged flak? I never got the feeling that I was able to avoid any, I would just see it and at later levels it seemed like the bottom of the place was getting hit and there really was no chance.

What's the best "getting started with IntyBASIC" guide? Side notes: I'm on linux, and I have the first book, which might be the answer.

Check out the IntyBASIC programming sub-forum and kind of lurk there, many links and guides and super-knowledgeable and helpful persons.

    Enjoy!

  3.

Since it's been a while since I posted one of these, I am sure you are missing them. :)

Openly wondering how a version of "Pirates!" might behave on an Intellivision. Thinking abstractly, it would resemble Defender of the Crown a bit in terms of time and resource management and "scenes", but I think might port fairly well especially if it used a bank of 42k ROM or two.

What are your thoughts on how it might work?

  4. I hope whatever path you choose is successful. Thinking on top of the tech details, it could be important to have something "that just works" for modern TVs. It's probably safe to say that 95% of people with Intellivision-to-TV connection issues think of changing their console to fit their TV rather than finding a TV that works with their console. Even if there was a "brick" in between the console and the gun, people would likely gravitate towards it instead of something sleeker that wouldn't work with their setup. Of course if you don't have large-ish commercial plans none of that matters. :)

    Thanks for looking into it!

{snip}e Intellivision world on the other hand had IntyVoice, which with licensed technology can generate custom speech, so technically what Inty-Home then represents is a 3rd party software developer back in the day who lacked the resources to make IntyVoice enhanced games.

Agreed. Inty Home is doing something that "works" for the collector but not the deep game player. I consider myself now more of a player than collector.

1982 me would look at the box and parts over and over and use a lot of imagination on the actual game.

2024 me would rather see the ultimate developer expression using 1983 capabilities and not look at any box or parts.

  6. Hi all. Looking for thoughts on how to rapidly accept input from keypad or disc. I mean very rapid, think of like Decathalon (or Track and Field in the old school arcade), with two people tapping as fast as possible, how quickly could IntyBASIC register the input as well as properly debounce? Is there a speed limit where after a certain speed, some taps would get lost?

    Thanks.

  7. My $.02, since you asked. 🙂

    1. Downloading ROMs and giving them away is illegal and unethical. “You” don’t get to decide on either if you are not the publisher or the programmer, even if you think you are a Sovereign Citizen.

    2. Lack of ROMs doesn’t seem to hurt  profits when it’s the CIB that generates dollars in the Intellivision community, based on my passive observation on AA over the last 7 years.

    (2) does not override (1)

  8. If the side buttons were used for shifting gears up and down and RPMs had to be watched, it would add a new dimension to managing the racing. eg the white car instead of being the slowest would have the be worst shifting range and top speed and have least chance of blowing the engine, but the faster cars would give the benefit sound of straight cut gears on the extended track parts!

(no I can’t turn my brain off sometimes)

  9. Something even crossed my mind that it would be "interesting" (kidding not kidding) to hold the Intellivision controller sideways, slightly resembling the NES controller hold, and then use the keypad buttons to do things like braking or shifting. Maybe get a rasping file to remove some of the controller bumps. :)

The top side button could upshift.  The bottom side button can automatically downshift while braking, a bit similar to SMB.

In a non-Intellivision car, a person could shift from 5th to 1st if they wanted to (with all kinds of risks) for special cases. Maybe the rightmost and/or leftmost keypad buttons to declare the gear?

  12. Getting some miles in. Pun intended.
i’m not asking for anyone to “do something “, but I wonder what the control mechanic could be to give a car, maybe only in one player mode, a manual transmission. Of course the keypad/disc control issue is well documented, but it’s almost 2024 and I’m sure the creative thinkers could think creatively about what might work.
