i played tempest a handful of times in the arcade when it originally came out, it was a very minimal shooter, and living in a big city with many arcades, there were better games to play. again, never saw anyone playing it or mastering it. tempest is one of my favorite games now. i've discovered it 10 years ago on the xbox 360, and have played it to death. getting up to the light blue levels and 450k on arcade mode. with savestates, i have gotten to level 99 and the random waves. i have played tempest 2k, and other minter clones. i have championed the game on other forums, and in many ways, so i'm not sure why you think i don't like it. it's an underrated classic. but again if it weren't for jeff minter, no one would remember it, or still be talking about it. later -1

Again, that's a misconception. Just because a game sold through to a lot of arcade owners, does that make it a hit? what if nobody plays it. looking at these sales numbers, do you remember all these as being hits? ================= Machines that sold over 12k units: ============================== Mr. Do! (30,000 in the US) Popeye (20,000 in the US) Jungle Hunt (18,000 in the US) Scramble (15,136 in the US) Super Cobra (12,337 in the US) Space Duel (12,038) from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_age_of_arcade_video_games The other games on the list could be considered real hits.. =============================================== And yes, almost every single real arcade hit, had a sequel. 15 of the top games on this list had one. There wasn't even one considered for tempest. later -1

movies have nothing to do with videogames, so that doesn't make any sense. sales again, are just one factor, which you keep mentioning over and over again. -------------- yes, this might be a 'niche' classic game. real hits, have sequels, are noticed by the industry, have spin offs and influence other games.. none of which tempest did. fine, so it had some sales, did that mean that games like: (all have higher grosses - from your wikipedia link) ------------------- World Club Champion Football Mushiking: King of the Beetles Oshare Majo: Love and Berry World Club Champion Football: Intercontinental Clubs StarHorse3 Season I: A New Legend Begins Border Break Sengoku Taisen Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road All deserve the name of 'hits'? and have they all made an impact. ==================================================== fine, maybe it was a financial hit, but not a critical or gaming hit with the fans. in the early days, selling that many unit was par for the course, so what does that prove. games that sold less, were much bigger hits: ------------ dig dug robotron 2048 (mother of all twin stick shooters) qbert pole position missile command battlezone breakout etc etc my final point is 'tempest', is a game that is only still even being mentioned because jeff minter bothered to try keeping it alive. if it wasn't for him, we still wouldn't even be talking about it now.... it would just be a footnote in gaming history. later -1

1) never had a sequel in the arcade 2) not mentioned in the best games or iconic games list like pac-man, space invaders, asteroids ... (it was a very fancy space invaders clone with twists)... (no main character either, the claw?) 3) the hardware though great, has many issues, and finding color vector monitors is hard and they are tricky to fix 4) proprietary controller, unlike the trackball (which has other uses), isn't found on too many other games.. (although microsoft and some other companies make dials for the pc) 5) sales, is a good indicator, but is just one factor in how well a game does, ever see a tempest tournament? ever see see it competitions? 6) only one recent portable version, and it's not even the actual game.. [not including emulated versions on compilations] i had a hard time even finding clips of it on youtube with high level gameplay, hardly anyone has ever mastered the game, most people never even get to the red levels. i've hit light blue levels.... and using continues, got through the invisible, and green levels up to 99... (i have put several videos on youtube showing all the levels). here's some white levels on one of them: sure tempest is a great game, but it's niche appeal at best.... hardly the qualifications of a 'hit' game, it might have had its moment in the sun briefly after coming out, but many other shooters have surpassed it. later -1

no thanks, it was a flop when it originally came out, i never saw anyone good at it, or playing it. there were never lines for it. it would do a lot worse now (by the way, i love and still play the original). later -1

yes, that's true. but how many people have access to them. in the meantime, people have gotten used to controllers with sticks. i have a rotary controller that i can use on the pc/xbox 360/ps2/ps3 so i do alright. will definitely check out t4000, and by the way who cares if they use an old soundtrack. it still is awesome. later -1

ok, it is possible to play this game without the denuvo DRM now. should be able to give a review and more thoughts on it shortly. later -1

well, i got used to the new dash moves and gameplay of sonic 4 also. this game isn't for everyone. some people prefer the new gameplay mechanisms, others like the older retro style physics. later -1

was going to get the pc version, but the steam version sneaked in DENUVO copy protection: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/08/sonic-mania-pc-version-launches-with-denuvo-online-requirement/ so i'll wait until they remove and then play it.. no point in being online for a single player game. later -1

still noticing a lot of bugs in the game on the xbox one. you don't consistently get an extra man playing sonic every 100 coins, with tails and knuckles it seems to work. it doesn't work with sonic and tails either. the save points don't really save your progress, unless you have more men to continue. if you die, and your game ends, you have to start the level from the beginning. the collision detection with the bosses is pretty accurate, but at times, ti can be off. later -1

i got over the digital download only for games a long time ago. the xbox 360 had plenty of great retro games that were digital only.. sure, some came out on compilations later.. but most didn't, so if you wanted to play them, that was your only choice. so now, if a game is digital only, and a decent price, i don't think twice about it. i have very few physical discs for games, and more digital. i don't miss the discs. since most games you have to install to the hard drive anyways. it's actually kind of annoying, because a lot of games, you still have to put the disc in the system anyways, even if you own the game..,, later -1

sonic 4 was fine.. .only people that can't play it didn't like it. i enjoyed it when it came out, and still play it even now.,.. the new features are very helpful, and the graphics are fine. sure the physics are different, but you get used to it... i never played sonic 3 when it came out, because 2 was my favorite, but i played it later, and found it great, along with sonic cd. i actually am still playing sonic 3-d blast, which is 3rd person isometric... but looks the best compared to the other games, it also came out for the saturn. will play sonic mania on the pc when it comes out. later -1

i played it on the xbox one. feels great, and is very close to the response of the genesis sonic playability. the level designs are great, and lots of time to explore... they took away the point of the rings, since you don't get an extra man every 100... but theres hidden extra men to make up for that. you can use the dpad or the analog stick to move... the dpad works better... i haven't tried it with a joystick yet... the achievements are well thought out, and fun to attempt to get, getting all the emeralds will be pretty tough though, and chasing the ufo levels are a lot of fun too... highly recommended later -1

It should be out now. Any reviews from people here? Any good highscores on the leaderboards? later -1

I just got for the original Xbox, House of the Dead 3, and Tecmo classic arcade compilation. Both work flawlessly on the Xbox 360. House of the Dead 3 also includes House of the Dead 2 as an unlockable. Not sure if they support light gunsl Tecmo arcade only works if you set the graphics to 480p, and then it runs fine. Was fun playing some of the old retro games like bombjack, rygar, and some other lesser known games. later -1

The xbox 360 backwards compatibility for original xbox games works pretty well. NTSC has 279 games that work, with the small download that updates it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360 You just put the disc in and it works. I haven't tried installing games to the hard drive, but I have a feeling you still have to insert the original disc to get them to work. later -1

i'm not interested in swordquest... but i like centipede and will check that out. maybe will start a new thread once it's out. later -1

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 is amazing
negative1 replied to Flojomojo's topic in Modern Console Discussion
These games are console and pc, and mobile only, so no emulation is needed. Just buy the PC version. championship CE version included in pac-man museum: https://www.amazon.com/Pac-Man-Museum-Online-Game-Code/dp/B00I82KNI6/ref=sr_1_3?s=mobile-apps&ie=UTF8&qid=1498518307&sr=8-3&keywords=pacman+museum+pc championship CE DX pc: https://www.amazon.com/Pac-Man-Championship-Online-Game-Code/dp/B00FK69LCM?th=1 later -1 -
Microsoft's AI Just Shattered the Ms. Pac-Man High Score
negative1 replied to Flojomojo's topic in Atari 2600
jr pac man would also be better test, but the thing is, since they've got a solution for ms pac man, it should theoretically also work for all pac-man type games. and most maze games in general. later -1 -
Microsoft's AI Just Shattered the Ms. Pac-Man High Score

if there was more video, it might be possible to see if there are patterns for the 2600 version. given that the ghosts don't go in random directions for the levels (dont remember if they do or dont).. there is a 266k replay here: later -1 -
i've gotten to the killscreen in the arcade pacman, (and home emulators), and on non fixed killscreens gotten to 7.1 million on the xbox 360 using patterns. so yeah, the 9th key pattern can work indefinitely, if you don't mess up, and if you do, and know how to recover, you can keep going. on ms pac-man, there are pseudo patterns. basically, you go to the hiding spots, and let the ghosts group together. from that point on (boards below 21 where they blink), you can do the same routine, and get all the ghosts on the energizers. for the boards past 21, where they don't blink, you put the ghosts into a holding pattern, and then can lead them around and clear the 2 boards that alternate (junior and chase board). there are many killscreen games, and games showing these on youtube, look up aart van vliet, or velvet rolo to see them. no one's gotten to 1 million on the arcade, because of the random fruits. however, on some home versions emulated there is no kill screen, and a screen 256, it starts over, so it is possible to get that far (still working on it). i put up a video on youtube showing the restart. i've played the 2600 versions of pac-man, and ms pac-man, and yes, because of the lack of patterns, they are much harder. would have liked to see more video of the AI that played the 2600 ms pac man, maybe that would have had some ideas about it. later -1

Your guess on what OS will Ataribox be using?
negative1 replied to koolaidpickle's topic in Modern Console Discussion
since it's pc based, it might be some proprietary offshoot of android. doubt it will be windows based. later -1 -
This story is getting bigger and bigger, and comes up under one of the major tech stories on google. However, still lots of questions : https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2017/06/17/prepare-to-be-disappointed-by-whatever-ataris-new-console-turns-out-to-be/#222d54d825a8 later -1

well, unfortunately, there's a lot of hackers out there, that want to mess with the leaderboards, which is sad, since it's obvious when they do that. the only way to clear them is to wipe the leaderboards. later -1
