  1. Plus, honestly, if I play a game once a week on new systems (that would be very generous these days), you have to sit and wait for all the updates to download and that takes a long time unless you have lightning quick internet. I know when I got Doom, I came home from work excited to play it. By the time the update downloaded for the system and the game, it was like 9:30 already. Patches and whatnot are a good thing and part of modern gaming, I get that, but at the end of the day, I'm paying a lot of money for these games and services and when I decide to play them and can't because of updates, that really takes the piss out of gaming for me. Gears of War 4 is going to be a similar situation, I work the day it comes out. By the time I get home and download the patches, how much am I even gonna get to play it? It kills the excitement for me. And if, for example, say I want to play a few rounds of Call of Duty every once in a while, well you can't really play on the spur of a moment because you're downloading updates. I think this generation is especially flawed from mandatory disc installs, lack of hard drive space, lack of single player, etc.

whats the rush, just start the downloads at nightime, and they should be ready the next day.

you do know that you can schedule downloads right?

unless its a huge download patch when you first get it, most of the updates are small and don't take long.

i don't care for this method either, but thats the price of modern gaming.

  2. i don't play online games. so most of the new games released don't impact me.

same with first person shooters, etc.

mostly play retro games, arcade classics, and puzzle games, with a few shooters and fighting games in there.

this has been the best generation yet for me now, with the xbox 360 leading the way.

i will never get an xbox one, or anything from sony or nintendo, so i don't really care what they are releasing.

  3. Hmmmm You thought picking up a Lego game was the best route to play a handful of classic titles?

Interesting. Curious what your thoughts on this one are going to be. I also snagged the starter pack, about 4 of the level packs (Midway, Portal, Simpsons, Dr Who) and about a dozen of the fun packs (a figure and a vehicle per pack) but I love Lego games, and Lego's in general. I agree with Keatah's months old opinion, I think people are missing the point.

P.S.: More info about the Midway Level pack... http://atariage.com/forums/topic/176909-no-more-root-beer-tapper/page-3?do=findComment&comment=3582086

i am an avid retro game collector, and have been getting them since the first standalone emulators came out for the macs. (borrowed one just to play them).

those were joust , defender and robotron 2084:

    293236-digitalec-1272060131-5275.jpg

and all the pc emulators from microsoft, and mame, etc, etc.

i have all them for the genesis, super nintendo, psx, ps2, dreamcast, xbox,

so i am just getting it to keep up with the releases. since i have an xbox 360.

i actually own an arcade blasteroids, so i am very interested in seeing it emulated for the home.

along with a few of the other exclusives to this.

i don't care about real life lego, or lego games, i played star wars lego collection, and it was a grind,

and that's pretty much all the lego gaming i need, since they haven't changed anything about gameplay except collecting studs.

so there's nothing new to be found there. i will probably just never use the lego pieces, and stick the tags on the pad when needed just to get past

    those parts.

it would be nice if there were leaderboards or something like that, but i doubt they would have those.

(thats another reason why i keep getting game compilations to compete).

  4. the last system i bought at launch, well, the only one, was the sega saturn.

    and it came out early.

i don't think any system since then has interested me as much, and in fact, i usually wait 4 or 5 years if

i ever do buy a new one.

i think the xbox 360 is the last console i will get. all the recent ones (not including nintendo), require online to game,

so i haven't bothered with them.

  5. i would never buy a ps3 or a ps4. since i already have an xbox 360.

however i would consider playing some of the exclusive games on a PC. (although there isnt much of choice games now)

unfortunately the high price of the subscription, is a big part of the problem.

if it was kind of like steam, it would have been better.

  6. MAME is unnecessarily frustrating with the endless updates that make files that worked fine before now suddenly wrong. I am running MAMEUI64 0.172 and it runs almost all the games, though Galaga does not work, and all the vector games that worked with Windows XP don't work. Not a single one. I can't figure out why and nobody here had any idea why either. Conversely, some games that I didn't even realize I had now work and appear in the list of games so I think that you'll never get all your roms to work on one version of MAME but this one is close, albeit minus all the vector games. Are you using a front end? I couldn't get it to do anything via the command line version of MAME. Way too difficult for me!

    i had the same problem.

Well, i've been trying some games in MAME again, and using the latest 170 and up versions.

for some reason a lot of the old namco games don't work anymore for me.

    galaga, dig dug, etc....

after looking around found out that you need namco BIOS files to make them work correctly,

    which you didn't need before.

    https://forums.emulator-zone.com/showthread.php?t=14069

Basically, look for namcoXX.zip files, and place them in the ROMS directory,

    and then they work.

  7. although it might be nice to have a smaller sized computer to play games on.

the biggest problem with this is the controls, i can't see how you are going hold this thing for hours, without worrying about batteries,

or trying to hit buttons, it's just awkward.

plugging in your own controllers would be better.

however, if you're going to do that, you might as well buy a mini laptop or a small tablet.

i have been using a surface pro 1, for a few years now. it was used, so i got it for around $300 at the time, and it's much less now.

it can play every emulator i tried, and a lot of modern games (though i don't play that many, only retrogames).

it has a kickstand, but even docked, i can hook up anything from arcade controllers, to just usb gamepads.

the graphics are 1080p, and it is touchscreen compatible.

it's more powerful than most of my desktops, since it's an i5, and it runs unthrottled most of the time.

although it's size is much larger than the ones mentioned here, i would prefer this size compared to a smaller one like this size.

  8. i love shooters, and i love raiden.

    this was an instant buy.

the cost doesn't matter, because there are hardly any shooters, and it won't likely ever come down in price.

it's a fun and challenging game with excellent graphics, and gameplay, if you don't like the commentary, turn down the volume.

  9. the worries abourt qbert are overblown.

the arcade version has problems, yes

    - wrong number of extra men - but that makes it more competitive

    - wrong sound effects - doesn't impact gameplay

    - slick and sam don't always work properly

other than that, there aren't any issues i know of.

    controls are rock solid

    - my friend rbr arcade has the high score at over 350k

i myself have 310k, and many other high scores.

qbert emulation is fine as it is.

yes, the sony ps3 version is better, but it's not available anywhere else.

  10.

What type of spinner controller do you use? i'd love to get one!

i bought a USB spinner off ebay for $30 several years ago.

there are some up now, but just the parts:

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Arcade-Rotary-Spinner-Control-Tron-Arknoid-Tempest-MAME-build-/172231750872?hash=item2819cff4d8:g:nVYAAOSwt7pXL8YT

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/USED-Atari-TEMPEST-SPINNER-A036794-Original-Arcade-Machine-Video-Game-Part-/122011841985?hash=item1c6878f5c1:g:MiYAAOSwqBJXWuw3

it's basically a mouse taken apart, and attached to a spinner control on top.

if you are good with tools you can make one:

    http://arcadecontrols.com/arcade_spinners.shtml

    http://arcadecontrols.com/files/Miscellaneous/spinner.pdf

or buy a professional one, and just interface it with USB.

    https://www.ultimarc.com/SpinTrak.html

it works well for racing games, and many others that need precision control.

  11. Awful.

Without proper controls or even a mouse....these will hurt on consoles. A $40 novelty and a disc swapping annoyance I can live without. They got my money on Steam for this anyway.

microsoft has announced keyboard and mouse support coming to the xbox one in a few months, however, support would have to be built into the games

    http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/06/microsoft-xbox-one-mouse-and-keyboard-support-is-months-away/

Someone somewhere out there needs to make and sell an adapter to plug in some paddles (and joysticks).

    Ben!!!!!!

there are currently many, many solutions to using keyboards, mice, and every controller you could probably think of for the xbox 1, xbox 360, ps3, ps4 and more:

i am currently use a mouse and keyboard, also a trackball, and a spinner for tempest, crystal castles, centipede, millipede, and missile command.

For the last several years, there have been USB converters, that allow:

    1) any controller to work with any console : PS3, xbox 360, PS4, and xbox one

    2) allow remapping controls to keyboard and mouse

    3) allow preprogrammed combo's and macros

    4) allow you to script controls

    5) allow you to record and playback your moves

I use the Cronus Max pro plus:

    http://cronusmax.com/precision-mouse-keyboard-control/

    You can also use :

    XIM4

    http://xim4.com/

    or the Titan one:

    http://www.consoletuner.com/products/titan-one/

Microsoft is slowly catching up, but these offer much better features

    for cost.

  12. first off, i think it's a great collection. about $30 for 31 games, or almost $1

    per game.

2nd i have an xbox 360, and i think the leaderboards are great.

    good for competition.

most of the achievements are pretty easy, but there's a few

    tough ones in there.

i'm using a custom arcade stick, and also have an x-arcade stick.

i guess if you had a fighting stick, you wouldn't have as many control issues.

that, and the fact you can remap most of the controls make it feels like the arcade.

also, the analog stick for sinistar works pretty well compared to the arcade version.

with powerups and new bricks, etc..

    but check it out:

  14. i'm a huge fan of both millipede and centipede..

and i think millipede is an awesome port on the 2600...

(haven't tried out the gcc proto yet)..

does anyone know if there is a bug (haha) in the

2600 version of centipede when you reach 880k?

i've played it on the gameroom emulator on the

xbox 360... what happens is there is some extra

graphics at the upper left, and the scorpion comes

out, but stays stuck on the screen..

here's a video of the issue.. (gameplay up to

    1 million)

    ========================================

also here's some video of millipede near 1 million

    it's a very challenging version!

    =======================================

no issues with that version of the game..

  15. i don't know if this is possible for the 7800..

working on a pc version is tough, but i

have all the resources... you can get

them converted from the mobile versions

    (ios, android, java etc)...

    iceobj01.jpg

    icon57x57new.jpg

    paccemaze00mazeneonl.jpg

the game logic is simple, but can get a little tricky

later on... the ghost ai is not that clever, and

the gameplay is more about speed, and a time

    limit...

i don't know about programming for atari systems,

but a friend and i have been porting a lot of arcade

games using the gamemaker program for pc's..

i have a 360 and play this on there.. and on my

cellphone, but this game needs to be on other

    systems, and platforms..

  16. this would be cool to play..

i've been going through what few ports

of these there are (2600), pc, commodore 6400.

and i've played the regular 5200 versions..

    all through emulators..

having a bug that is causing major issues though...

if you die, when the fruit/bonus blows up your

energizer, it becomes permanent and you can't

finish the maze... check out the upper left

weird looking sprite for the energizer

    ===============================================

    0017d.png

    has anybody run into this?

other than that it's a very hard version..

put up a decent replay over at HARP

    (home action replay) 55k
