I think you are missing the point of the Kickstarter. There are already plenty of extra C64c cases out there - I have 4 of them sitting in a box. New cases were made from original molds and are available for sale on eBay. People are replacing old/beat up cases with new ones, or have new ones kicking around looking for something to do with them. Another company has purchased the molds and are planning on selling even more in different colors in the near future.
The whole point of this Kickstarter is that you can use those cases without destroying them with tools/glue/etc. I think it has a very limited audience, but is a good idea to make use of an available case.
The guy who started this is active in the community and sells lots of other 3D printed parts for C=/retro computers. You're right, he clearly didn't NEED a Kickstarter to fund it but from what I understand he thought it would be a cool, small project to run with his son.
Obviously it isn't for everyone, but I don't think it's fair for people to glance and think its goal is for people to destroy working retro computers - because that's not true.

In case any one is looking to do something like this, either with an old/dead C64c or one of the new C64c cases available, here is a pretty cool Kickstarter:

Hahaha, I wouldn't mind any vintage get together. I have fond memories of my old Coleco Adam!

I lived in Milford for 2 years, also Franklin for 8 years, now Woonsocket, RI.
Wow, cool to know that others are so local! I grew up in Woonsocket.
Anyone ever have any local retro meets? Would like to take part in something.

I'm more of a C=/Amiga guy, but curious where you are located? I am in Milford, MA.

I've used Acill/Paul as well. I think I was one of the first, found him on amiga.org. Sent him my Amiga 4000T motherboard & assorted boards, then my Amiga 1200 board. Did great work on both.
Paul seems like a great guy genuinely interested in helping people save their vintage hardware!
I wouldn't hesitate sending him anything. As a matter of fact I still have an Amiga 600 I'd like to send him.

*Acill is great (not Scull)

Scull is great. Replaced all the caps on my 1200 and 4000T. My 4000T had an audio issue due to failing caps.

Please count me in for another Pac Man coaster set!

Yes. Miss those times!

Thanks for all the help guys!
Unfortunately, your best option with the F model is to check out the link by kodak80 in post #9 and find a compatible monitor that can sync to the lower frequencies used for ST low and medium resolution, at least if you want color video and games.
I don't think I'll have trouble finding a compatible monitor. Unless I'm missing something the issue is similar to the Amiga. I already have a couple of displays with VGA inputs that handle all the low frequency Amiga resolutions.
So, I think I just need to find the right cable...
-
Thanks guys, will need to check this out.
So, I think I understand that even if my monitor is capable of displaying the color resolutions the cable I have now would not be wired up properly to output them. Correct?
On the wiki article there is a link to this vendor:
http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/monadapt.htm
The web page is a bit verbose, but it seems like he has a cable for $55 that will display all 3 modes on a single cable without switch? On his pic, what is the connector next to the Atari DIN plug? It looks like an RF connector of some sort?
-
Hi -
Yes, this is the cable I purchased:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATARI-ST-VGA-MONITOR-ADAPTER-WITH-SOUND-LEAD-CABLE-/320526274539?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4aa0dacfebThe description says monochrome but I just assumed the hi-res mode would be above and beyond any normal color modes.
I don't think I'd be up for soldering a cable, so I will have to search for something else. Guess I need to obtain some disks as well.
Can ST disks be created on a PC?
-
For work in color you need monitor which can work on low horizontal frequencies (not only in VGA mode), what is not case with most of LCD monitors. If it has RGB, Scart input, then you are lucky. And proper cable.Or some LCD TV - they mostly have video input. Composite input may be solution too. Of course, some old Atari monitor can serve too, but I'm not for it.
I have some pretty flexible displays. So, will this VGA adapter output color if I have a display capable of syncing down to the proper frequency? What's the best way to test? I assume I need some disks?
Thanks for the replies!
-
Doh!!! I guess I should have posted before ordering that cable.
So, what's the best output I can get in color with a non-Atari monitor? Composite?

Hi -
I confess, I've always been a C= / Amiga guy, however I couldn't pass up a 1040STf that was offered to me. I'd love to get it setup and working and see if I can get into using the ST - but I have no idea where to start.
Got it hooked up and purchased a VGA adapter cable off eBay. It powers up to a gray screen and stays there for quite a while with the disk drive clicking. At first I thought it wasn't working, but eventually it does boot to a TOS (?) screen. Here are some pics:

So, where do I start?
1 - I guess I need a mouse. I believe Amiga mice will not work. Any reasonable alternative, or should I just grab an ST mouse off eBay?
2 - Any idea what those ribbon cables coming off the back are for?
3 - Any other suggestions to get moving forward?
I plan on opening the unit up to clean it a bit and check out the internals but have not had time yet.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I lost patience with tweaking and tuning CRTs sometime back in the 2005-2006 epoch. And I would have none other than a modern LCD (or OLED when they perfect it) for my gaming and simulation purposes.True. While a good CRT has upsides it has many downsides as well. I buddy of mine who is huge into home theater stuck with a CRT front projector for quite a while because, while the LCD and DLP projectors had many upsides, he was obsessed with the downsides compared to his CRT. Now that he finally moved to LCD/DLP I don't think he could ever go back. Although the LCDs/DLPs didn't have the black level his CRT had, the brightness, geometry and resolution blew the CRT away. There's comfort in what you are familiar with I guess.

I have an old 42" commercial Panasonic plasma that I absolutely love. It's only 480p, but the picture is just great - not as sharp as the latest LCDs but it just has a certain depth about it that I've always liked.
I've had this plasma for 10+ years - my first flat panel display. Bought it without speakers but added them after. It's been solid as a rock for me, most recently installed in my master bedroom.
Decided to get a Fire TV Stick for my master bedroom but the plasma does not have HDMI. Funny how a $35 purchase can trigger a $500 purchase.
So, I replaced my trusty old plasma with a new Insignia 55".
Anyway, I always though the Panasonic plasma would rock as a display for my old Commodore/Amiga stuff and I was right! Brought it down to my basement home/office and mounted it to the wall. Tested with my C64 (composite), Amiga 600 and also my Amiga 4000T (RGB > VGA and also RGB > VGA > BNC) and the display performs great. There's also an NTSC/PAL switch in the menu options but I haven't tested PAL. All Amiga modes I tried seem good.
My model has VGA, composite/svideo and BNC which is switchable from RGB to component. I believe there's a DVI card available as well but I never owned one.
Anyway, I love it and would definitely choose this over an old CRT or new LCD for a low res retro display. My model is a 42PWD6UY but I'm sure there are others in this series that would perform just as well.
It doesn't do the picture justice, but here are a couple of pics:
The C64 and Amiga Workbench pics show a pattern on the screen but it's not there in person - image is very smooth.
I thought this was worth sharing so cross-posted to a few different forums.

I'm primarily interested in Commodore 8-bit and Amiga - those are the computers I used growing up. I come to this forum to browse a bit and read mostly about the Coleco Adam because that system does have a place in my heart, even though I only had one briefly.
Although I do frequent many other Commodore and Amiga forums, I have to say I like the vibe around here more than many other forums. I'd definitely be interested in reading and contributing (when I can) to Commodore and Amiga forums on here.
However, I do think 8-bit should be separate from Amiga - they are really entirely different and I see no reason to combine them other than to reduce the # of forums and perhaps make the forum appear to be more active.

Hi -
Where are you located? I may be interested in some. Have an Adam with something bad on the board, so perhaps with one of your units I can create something working.
-
I am interested. Any pics?

Hi -Have a Sega Dreamcast for sale here. Selling items as pictured:
- main Dreamcast unit
- 3 controllers
- VMU
- power cable
- composite video cable
System works well, good shape.
Unit does prompt for the date/time when booted but has always done that since I owned it. Not sure if that's normal? If not, perhaps it needs a new battery.
I would like to sell this to a US-based buyer please. Price is $50 shipped to continental US.
Thanks!

Just got this in an email. Kind of odd, not aware of any dealings with him on eBay:
Hey Guys,
I know that we have dealt with each other on ebay in the past.
I just wanted to drop you a line to tell you how truly blessed I feel to be involved with toys and games. I know that a lot of you have heard about the Coleco Retro Gaming Convention in August in NJ.
If you haven't i am attaching a flyer. We will have retro games, toys, cosplay and the like.
The event is very family friendly event.
We are also working on a number of other things such as a Rainbow Brite Game, a Robotech Game and a Robotech Toy line.
Please share the flyer on facebook and twitter if you can...
For those of you who sale a ton of items on ebay, i was wondering if i could send you a bunch of cards to give out in your shipments of games. Let me know. If not, then no worries.
Also, if you don't mind, take a moment to like us on Facebook and join in on the conversation.
