Which is more memorable & nostalgic? Hardware or Software?
Kombalar replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
I also had a C64 and personally I don't see much extra value in the computer hardware itself. Or the slow 1541 floppy drive. Maybe there was some extra thrill with the cassette drive though. You loaded up Rambo or Commando for 15 minutes only to find out that it didn't work that time. And then reloaded and tried again. Haha. -

Ir depends. Nothing can compare with the genuine vector display and the thrill that I got when I purchased my Vectrex back in the day. Save two or three clssics (Mine Storm, Scramble and Cosmic Chasm) the games weren't really that special. But everything else was. I loved it and the Vectrex emulator does nothing for me. I have no desire to play those games with emulator. But some arcade games from the same era are amazingly good, even by today's standards. Also, it depends on the game. Games like Star Wars (that had special controllers) aren't the same on MAME. But emulation can capture 70% of the thrill in most cases, imho. -
5 Fascinating Facts About Atari's Star Wars
Kombalar replied to Kombalar's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Indeed. Often overlooked The Empire Strikes Back (Atari) is a worthy game sequel as well. Here's a list of Mike Hally's all projects. https://www.arcade-history.com/index.php?page=person&name=Mike+Hally -
I love this game. Just love it. My high score on the real arcade machine was over 30 Million points until I just quit of boredom. I learned the game so well that I could play it as long as I wanted. Even with one hand. Actually a lot of guys in my local arcade could. But I still loved it. It was an amazing game and it still is. Mike Hally is my hero. He created (imho) the two best arcade games ever, Star Wars and Gravitar. Good article here. http://mentalfloss.com/article/91166/5-fascinating-facts-about-ataris-star-wars

1.7 Million points on Baby Pac-Man Arcade (VPX + VpinMAME)
Kombalar replied to Kombalar's topic in Arcade and Pinball
I got to the 17th maze on the real machine. Only completed 11 on this PinMAME version now. Haha. But I'm using relatively tough dip switches. Same as my arcade did when I was a kid. I absolutely love this game. Most underrated masterpiece ever. Cheers. -
1.7 Million points on Baby Pac-Man Arcade (VPX + VpinMAME)
Kombalar replied to Kombalar's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Actually I created the previous PinMAME version which had many shortcomings (like the flippers that couldn't aim properly to the center). These issues have been fixed on this version. I didn't create the layout for this table but fixed the graphics (new cabinet) and made it play like it does now. You can view the WIP thread here (my nick is "Kristian"). http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=38512&page=6 I'm really happy you like it as much as I do. This is the real reward because I'm into emulation only because I actually want to PLAY these classics. -
1.7 Million points on Baby Pac-Man Arcade (VPX + VpinMAME)

I was creating this particular conversion with other people because I've played the real machine a LOT. It's impossible to convert 1:1 on Visual Pinball because of very unique physics but we did our best.. and at least it's quite a LOT like the arcade machine now. The difficulty level is very similar too. Glad you like it. I know I do. -
This is very old thread... sorry for "bumping" it but this is probably the correct place for this: This guy has very nice MAME HLSL settings provided with this video. I use older MAME 0.149 and couldn't get these going. But if someone wants to give them a shot... here you go.

I bought Space Ace, Dragon's Lair and Dragon's Lair 2 "originals" about 10 years ago. Has someone actually bothered to complete Dragon's Lair 2? It's amazingly frustrating and difficult.
-
Oh man it's so easy now. You only have to run this all-in-one installer and then go to VpinMAME folder and run Setup.exe. That's it. http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=11573 Let me know if you have issues and I'll help you. Indiana Jones is not for VPX yet but you can play it on VP9. It's included in that same package. http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=8506

Xevious Arrangement (in Namco Museum) Centipede (you never get tired of this masterpiece) Dig Dug (Atari roms) all in MAME. Cheers!
-
Yeah... look at my signature. I've played about 2 mil with a mouse (with easier dip switches) but I can play the real thing as long as I want (my record is 30 million and then I just quit). There's a big difference in the aiming and precision. Yoke is superior. ESB can be played with a mouse just fine, but not the original one. At least I can't. There are moments during the tower shooting that you have to move extremely fast on the either side and shoot to the corner. Also the later level trenches are very hard with a mouse. Tempest, Centipede, Pole Position, Marble Madness... they're all just as playable with an alternative controller. Star Wars (imho) is the only one that doesn't feel the same. But then again I don't mind the extra challenge, either. Cheers.

Indeed. You guys in the US are lucky that you can still buy those old arcade machines. In my country (in Scandinavia) you can find pinball machines but those old Atari arcade cabinets... no way. PS: Atari Star Wars is a prime example of a game that can't be emulated. Yes you can play it with a mouse but it will never feel the same without the original yoke.
-
No idea man. I asked that too in the video comments section but he didn't reply. It's in MAME so most likely a mouse.
-
Without emulation I would have never seen the great Atari 7800 games. I became a fan of that console BECAUSE of emulation. And being a pinball fan with limited room in my house, I can enjoy games like these again (thanks to PinMAME). Of course it's not the real thing but it's as close as it can realistically be.

I thought I was good in this game until I saw this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4lujbhWmZA

Gravitar ARCADE CABINET in Silicon Valley Working
Kombalar replied to RupanIII's topic in Arcade and Pinball
My all-time favorite arcade game. European version was nicer with the bezel though. Here's my video of the whole game completion (all 4 universes) by the way. Just uploaded yesterday. Cheers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=useRHfn1Z9I -
Pole Position (MAME) Pole Position II (MAME) Damn Suzuka and Seaside are hard with a mouse. Has anyone completed those tracks? And then this amazing PinMAME conversion of my childhood's greatest pinball machine. Ah, being 7-year old again and seeing this for the fist time.

Atari 7800 port of Space Duel Vectrex emulator and Baby Pacman on PinMAME / Visual Pinball X.
-
I've had my 2-player X-Arcade for about 10 years and my son (who's now 7 years old) has used it religiously. It has received all kinds of rough treatment (as you can imagine when a couple of 5-7 year olds play Mortal Kombat-like games) but it's still like new. Very high quality. Will probably last a lifetime. I use it almost daily with MAME. Highly recommended.

I'm a huge Xevious fanatic. I have completed the game in all difficulty levels and my arcade high score is over 1 million points. I spent my youth with this legendary game. But only recently I discovered the A7800 port of this game and damn what a great version it is. Very true to the original in many ways. Flags, hidden towers, map, etc. I owned a A2600 when I was very small kid but I never saw A7800 in person. It wasn't sold in my country (Scandinavia). I only saw pictures on the gaming magazines. If I had this home port version of Xevious when I was 10 years old I would have gone nuts. PS: I also had very impressive homemade port of Space Duel for 7800 (for my 7800 emulator) but lost it. I wonder if it's still available somewhere. Cheers.

Arcade (via MAME) Pole Position Track & Field Xevious Arrangement (in Namco Museum. Damn that Area 16 is hard. That's the last one. I got there but got frustrated too much and quit. Haha).
-
Those are very nice. I also created a few ones for my favorite games. . . I'd love to create this Gravitar authentic European bezel but can't find proper source material. Cheers.

MAME...dang, sure would like to use it, but...
Kombalar replied to atarilovesyou's topic in Arcade and Pinball
I have European keyboard. That might be different. My - button is left to RIGHT SHIFT. But of course any right hand thrust button next to fire is ok. I think RIGHT SHIFT is perfect for fire. SPACE for shield of course (use with your right thumb like the real thing). About the Atari 5-button system: It's the most precise controlling mechanism there is for these games. I wish they'd make more of them. I simply can't play them otherwise.
