MAME...dang, sure would like to use it, but...
Kombalar replied to atarilovesyou's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Hey man... that could work with the console versions like 2600... but with the arcades... no way!!!! Atari 5-button system is sacred. There's no other way to enjoy these machines in their original glory, imho. For keyboard this is the perfect combo: Z=LEFT X=RIGHT -=THRUST SPACE=SHIELD RIGHT SHIFT=FIRE -

Thanks for the tip TwinChargers. Best site I've tried because you can redefine keys for the games. That is a major issue with most JAVA-based sites. I mean... how are you going to play Asteroids with the arrow buttons. It's a blasphemy. In this one you can redefine them just like in MAME... press TAB ingame. I love that site. Just registered there and clocked a few high scores. -

Raiders of the Lost Ark. I never forget the feeling when I completed it. It was a big feat to a 9-year old kid.

On C64 emu: Stealth (Broderbund) Uridium (Hewson) Spelunker (Broderbund) <- best version of them all.

I would say Phoenix. It's actually better and more enjoyable than its arcade counterpart.

Excluding Pac-Man and ET, which is the worst game?

"Karate" is pretty pathetic. I also thought the Kangaroo conversion was pretty bad. -

Oh yeah... the early 80's isn't called the "Golden Age of Video Games" for nothing. I rarely play anything from the 90's. Raiden Fighters series is an exception... and Puzzle Bobble/Money Puzzle Enchancer with my 4-year old son (he loves them). -

I never wanted the full set because there's way too much crap. I don't have any of the Mahjong & quiz sh*t... or the Chinese fruit machines... card games and all that.... I have only the pure arcade games... and no clones... a few exceptions though. I have carefully picked up the ROMs I want to keep from RetroRoms and I have pretty solid collection. 2755 games out of what... 6000 (that amount has the clones though). There haven't been anything significant added in the past few years... I had 1.35 up until last week when I upgraded to the newest version. I did it only because of the new vector emulation which is incredible. Star Wars Trilogy is now playable on Supermodel emulator. That's pretty much the only "milestone" game there's left to emulate. PS: MAMEUIFX is great because you get the high score saving for (almost) all games. This is how my menu looks like.

What's the latest Atari related thing(s) you've bought on ebay?
Kombalar replied to Ross PK's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Bought this for PC. The conversions are better on MAME but I was curious to see this one. -
Yeah... and the only NAMCO/Atari-based game released on Vectrex was Pole Position. It's ok... but probably the LEAST suitable game to a vector monitor. They also ruined their chance to make money from the arcade classics on PC. The emulation came years before they released their Anniversary Editions... just 10 years too late. All different incarnations of ATARI have made some unforgivable business mistakes.

I don't know how anyone can say Vectrex controllers are unreliable. Well given their age this might be true now, but in principle it's built like a tank. How do I know? Well I spent five years of my childhood playing Vectrex daily... it received some rought treatment and never had a single problem with the controller. It's very well built. It's a great, great machine. ATARI really screwed up a HUGE opportunity to cash in with a similar console. Nothing wrong with the Cinematronics games though... but just imagine how much ATARI-licensed vector system would have sold.

Did they have Atari games in Japan? Or was it all Namco/Konami/Sega over there? -

I wish I had. If I lived in the States I would own several Atari arcade machines, but they're almost impossible to obtain here in Scandinavia. We had a rich arcade scene back in the 80's but for some reason there aren't any of those old games floating around. -

I got 30 million points in Atari Star Wars until I got bored & too hungry. When I played it in a local amusement park, a group of 10-15 Japanese tourists were once "oohing and aahing" when I was playing. I even handled the yoke with one hand and smoked a cigarette with the other. Then they clapped their hands when I completed the trenches in round 50 or so... my highest point of arcade gaming for sure. Completing Xevious (area 16) was a big thing for me as well. I absolutely LOVE that game, even today. -
The top 5 games that defined your childhood

Yeah... I should have named that. Awesome & very underrated masterpiece. How far did you get? I think I emptied 11-12 mazes... I went quite far to those that had black walls. -
