  1. Thanks Atarigeezer! That's the kind of answer I was looking for. As stated in the original post -- I already know the pinouts for the 4 serial ports on the 850. I'm more interested in what can be (and has been) hooked up to R2 through R4 -- particularly R4 which is quite different from the first three. Must have been neat back in the day with the radio setup you had in Guam. Sounds like fun.

  2. Hi gang! I have a few questions about the Atari 850 interface.

I've found pin outs for the four RS232 ports on the internet, but am confused as to what exactly R2 through R4 are intended to be used for.

Also, it appears that the power supply is 9.5V instead of the 9V that is common for most other Atari power supplies. Would a 9V power supply be enough to get an 850 to work?

What are people's opinions on the Atari 850 vs. P:R: Connection. I have both but the 850 is as of yet untested -- don't have a 9.5V power supply for it.

Thanks in advance for any answers / opinions / help.

  3. If you're gonna get an ST compatible mouse from Best Electronics, get this one:

    http://www.best-elec...om/accesori.htm

Its far superior to the original ST mouse. I've got several of them, and while

a bit expensive, they are great.

I already have two broken ST mice that I'm going to try to canabalize into one working one, or otherwise use Best's repair kit. I like keeping to the Atari brand as much as possible. Especially now with VBXE I can finally have a monitor that matches my XE setup.

And yeah, using the second joystick is nice, but even still if an old Mouse Master or similar device works, I'd be happy to be able to leave both in.

  4. Of course I can't speak on Candle's behalf, but.... I think Candle might have actually given you much more than you expected -- in the c816 thread when asked what the huge amount of internal rom was for, his response was simply "think gui".

On the topic of ST mice... There are several nice devices for sharing the joystick port with a mouse with either a manual switch to go between the two or automatically by pressing the fire button or mouse button. I wonder if these would work. I hate swapping devices.

Best Electronics should give you a commission on ST mice -- I'm sure they'll have a large influx of orders when your GUI nears completion. :)

Keep up the great work flash -- truly remarkable what you have done.

  5. So I guess this will be the first project to make use of the inexpensive assembly house you discovered, Candle?

In any case, great work -- I'm looking forward to this. Definitely put me on the preorder list. :)

I already have an idea for a programming project that I'd like to do with a 65816 and VBXE.

    Can't wait! :D

  6. Thank you for the update Candle. I'm really looking forward to this. I hope I'll be able to make it onto the order list.

All your hard work is appreciated by the community, and can't be expressed enough. Thank you for your time and effort on our beloved Ataris. Keep it up!
