The official sequel to Super Mario Bros. that was released in Japan will be turning 30 this June 3rd as it was released for the Famicom Disk System. As I stated in the Super Mario Bros. 2 to Doki Doki Panic thread that it was not released in North America due to being way too hard and frustrating for players in North America and or Europe. Instead of bricks, mushrooms, koopas, goombas, piranha plants, fire flowers, and Bowser we got shy-guys, snifits, phantos, birdos, cherries, Mousers, and Wart. I did a complete playthrough of the first quest (Worlds 1-9) of The Lost Levels in the bottom of this post. I only died 3 times total as two of them were dumb mistakes I made. But not too bad at all. In the Lost Levels this is what differs between that and the first game. - This is a one player game only and you can choose between a Mario or Luigi playthrough. - Mario has the same abilities in the first game, but Luigi runs slightly faster and has higher and longer jumping abilities. But has poor traction as he skids twice the distance as Mario. - A sound effect is made when skidding. - Some warp zones take you back a few levels. - Red Piranha plants come out of a pipe when standing alongside it. - You only get fireworks for bonus points if the last digit of your coins matches the same number in the last digit of the timer you touched the flagpole. You get a 1-Up and a 6 fireball bonus if you have a double digit number of coins that are divided by 11 (00,11,22,33,44,55,66,77,88,99) and the last coin digit matches the number on the timer when touching the flagpole. - You get an extra boost in height or distance when you stomp on an enemy. - Green trampolines shoot you up for a few seconds off the screen. - You get the remaining time awarded in points when clearing a -4 level. - You get 100,000 points for the remaining lives after conquering the game. - Complete Worlds 1-8 without warping to unlock World 9 which is reminiscent to the minus worlds. It continues endlessly until you lose all your lives. - Poisonous mushrooms reverse what a power up mushroom does. - Gusty winds blow you forward or back. - Some minor graphical upgrades. The ground is rockier, clouds have smiley faces, mushrooms replace fences, and the platforms are made of small mushrooms, and the font/lettering above has a shadow next to the text. - The second quest is composed of Worlds A-D. You have to clear 8-4 at least 8 times to access it which is why there are stars emblazoned in the title screen in the game's logo. Overall I enjoy playing The Lost Levels. It is not my favorite Mario game but I play it when I am in the mood to play a game with a good challenge. I thought Nintendo did the right move by not releasing this here and waiting 7 years for us to finally play it for the first time. There is some areas of the game that are difficult and want to make you throw the controller in rage but I played it so many times in the past 22 years that I am accustomed to it. Here are the videos of the first quest that I played from my youtube channel. http://youtu.be/uKnd5dNPXSA http://youtu.be/BH0T-xrmAWQ

Got a Famicom, Recommendations?
Nutsy Doodleheimer replied to RodLightning's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I highly suggest getting the Famicom Disk System peripherial so you can play the disk formatted games. Just be advised that the drive belt wears out after lots of play and need to be replaced, but it's after about 6-8 years worth of heavy play though. A great website to get Famicom related stuff is japangamestock.com They are excellent!! Congrats on getting the Famicom! I have the Sharp Twin Famicom which is the two in one that plays cart and disk games. -
Arcade originals that were easier
Nutsy Doodleheimer replied to masschamber's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The arcade version of Section-Z is way way easier than the shitty NES version. In the arcade it is self explanatory as you go through 26 areas from A-Z while the NES version is just a confusing mess and you have to have a great memory in where you go next or draw a diagram or map on paper in which teleporter takes you to which section as it is primarily a maze. And not to mention it is much more difficult. -

Super Mario Bros 2 (The Lost Levels) for the Famicom Disk System. In World 1-1 right when you start the game there is a red koopa pacing back and forth on a brick ledge. Hit him from underneath and hit the second brick to the last on the left side and you will get a mushroom pop it over the block to collect it and bash the second to last brick on the right and make sure the koopa is on the far right. Time it right and you will farm a bunch of points and getting extra lives in the process. Also in Super Mario Bros. 2. As you know you get two oppurtunities in sub space to collect coins as the third time the grass becomes vegetables. Find a spot in subspace where there is a bunch of grass near a pit. Collect as much as you can before the timer is up before going back to the overworld and fall in a hole. It will not count as a complete subspace visit when you die. And you can endlessly do so and get a ton of coins for the bonus chance at the end of a stage.

I agree. I really think Nintendo of America did the right and smart move by not releasing The Lost Levels here, it would have triggered people not interested in playing video games during the post crash as well as leaving a bad reputation on the behalf of Nintendo. I'm glad they waited a while to release it. I remember first playing the Lost Levels in 1993 and I did agree think it was hard but it took me a couple days to beat it entirely. I now have it on a repro NES cart, Virtual Console, and Famicom Disk System. I play it when I am up for a challenge. Thank you so much for the kind words as well!

Differences in sprites/animations and audibles. In Doki Doki Panic holding down B does not make any of your characters run and when you get to your last health meter your character does not shrink in size. Wart takes 4 hits instead of 6 to defeat him. Mama who is ported to Luigi in Mario 2 does not kick her legs around while jumping while she jumps the same distance, her jumping height is a tad less than Luigi's. In Doki Doki Panic, not many items were animated. For example, there are no animation frames for Cherries, POW Blocks, vines, grass, Crystal Balls, Bomb fuses, water, cloud platforms, and spikes; these were all animated for SMB2. The Albatoss enemy in DDP has fewer animation frames than its SMB2 counterpart. Waterfalls flow very quickly in DDP and were slowed down for SMB2. Audible changes In Doki Doki Panic: The "character select" and "aboveground" music is shorter The Starman and Sub-space background music is different 1-Ups make "finish level reward fanfare" noise Enemies make different noises when picked up or thrown Birdo makes different noises Rockets make different noises POW Blocks make different noises Cherries make a different noise when collected Doors and potions make different noises Mask gates make different noises Your character makes different noises when hit Whales' waterspouts make different gushing noises The Stopwatch's noise is slightly different

As most of you or some of you know about the Super Mario Bros. 2 controversy that happened about 30 years ago. As we all know the official sequel that was released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System a.k.a. "The Lost Levels" was never released in North America originally due to it being way too hard and more like a hack than a true sequel. And it wasn't until Summer 1993 we got a first taste of it for the SNES when it was released for the compilation Super Mario All-Stars. Also released as an unlockable in Super Mario Deluxe for the Game Boy Color in 1999, and lastly the official emulated 8 bit game for the Wii Virtual Console in fall 2007. Super Mario Bros. 2 was a port of a Japanese game released in July 1987 for the Famicom Disk System called Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic (Dream Factory: Heart Pounding Panic) Nintendo collaborated with Fuji TV in Japan for development of the game. Shigeru Miyamoto and Koji Kondo designed it. And after great reviews of it. Miyamoto thought that this would be the perfect sequel for North American and European players. After some tinkering and fine tuning Super Mario Bros. 2 was released in fall 1988. While it was released in Japan as Super Mario USA in 1992. So here are the major and obvious differences of the two games courtesy of the mushroom kingdom website. I own Doki Doki Panic and I consider it a great game. The Games Title Screen Story Character Select: In Doki Doki Panic when you select your character, you are stuck with the one you have chosen until you clear 7-2 or get a game over. Level Intro Restarting a level after losing a life Pause Screen Bonus Chance: In Doki Doki Panic the vegetables were in the slots from the corresponding levels. Game Over: Doki Doki Panic uses a save feature due to using a floppy disk. Phanto: In Doki Doki Panic when Phanto was in the key chamber and you pick up th key he would not give chase until you exit the room. In these stages he was never in the chamber. Also he looked less menacing than in Super Mario 2. The Lost Mouser: The World 5-3 boss is Clawgrip in Super Mario 2 while in Doki Doki Panic it is a harder version of Mouser and the third time you battle him. Stargazing: Some of the stars are in different spots or missing. World 4-1: No powerup where the first lamp is located like in Super Mario 2 it appears. World 5-3: 2 tiles of sand were removed under the warp jar in Mario 2, making it difficult to access unless you have Luigi, only way is to hitch a ride on an albatoss. World 6-3: The shortcut to the pyramid in Doki Doki Panic was just jumping down while you had a riskier approach and had to hop a few clouds in Mario 2. World 7-1: The extended cloud platform that was in Doki Doki Panic was removed in Mario 2 making it no access to shortcut your way over the column unless you used Luigi to power jump.

The Official NEO-GEO Thread!
Nutsy Doodleheimer replied to fdurso224's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I like to drop by and wish a "Happy 2 year Anniversary" to the Neo-Geo thread and being on Atariage for 4 years I like to say Fdurso224 (Anthony) is one of the nicest and coolest people I have met on the site. Just a fantastic person! While I don't have a physical Neo Geo AES, CD, or an MVS cabinet I have several modded original xbox systems built with every emulator and ROMs for them, I do have Neo Geo included. My favorite is the Metal Slug series and Professional Baseball Stars. A great system still going 26 years strong! Let me add a few photos. -
