    Kinda really lame this only works with one game: Duck Hunt.

     

    I couldn't even use my RetroUSB "Shooot teh Dawg" VS Duck Hunt repro, still one of my favorites. Nope, nope, only works with the original. I think it would have been more successful if a solution could have been produced that worked with all unmodified Zapper games.

     

     

     

    Does this make other Zapper games work? No, the patch code only works with Duck Hunt, so no Hogan's Alley or anything like that. That said, Modern Mallard enables all three game modes inside of Duck Hunt: single-duck mode, two-duck mode, and clays mode.

    He's just applying the patch to the Duck Hunt game for the LCD ROM hacks distributed online. I am curious however if the improved lightgun pcb (enabling these hacks to work properly) would interfere with other games.

     

     

     

    After pondering the matter for a few days I have come to a distinct conclusion: I have no need for this overpriced modern contraption.

    A $50 gun... that won't work without the $100 accessory. It's $150.

     

    Not to mention, no telling what other stuff you have to buy to interface with the HDTV screen and game console. I imagine you need a gun (maybe or maybe not the exact model we just saw), a tracking system around the actual TV screen, some interface that connects to the composite feed (so it can tell the unit exactly where the "hit" is) and upscales the signal, and some smart device that communicates with the above items.IE, it won't be cheap, or it will be rubbish, or both. Don't throw away your CRTs just yet... :roll:

    The game is Sydney Hunter & The Caverns of Death

    The plan is to release the game complete in box just like back in time!

    It's going to be release for both Turbografx 16 and PC Engine

     

    PCBs and card shells are done, we're only looking for a good source for Jewel Cases

  4. The local mission thrift store still has piles of working CRTs. It would be worth a look to check them out. One of them was a gorgeous Console Trinitron. The console would be large enough to support a big screen TCL flat panel for sure. Someday when I own my own house and have the ultimate game room setup...

     

    Until then, we have NES (RetroUSB AVS), SNES (Super NT), and Sega Genesis (Mega SG) covered as FPGA replacements. UltrHDMI mod for the N64, the HDMI dongles for Game Cube, and Wii-U works with Wii out of the box for HDMI output, and Switch is native HDMI. Hyperkin is working on an HD Zapper solution; only time will tell if it's the bees knees or hot garbage.

     

    That just leaves me with Turbografx and Atari with no HD output, though someone is working on a plug in up-scalar for the expansion port, hopefully with CD support as well.

     

    Still can't forget about those lightgun games though. CRTs still have a function as retro game gear.

    They also seem to be making a spiritual successor to Duck Hunt, but the price tag is hard to swallow. If the gun is really $150, I'm gonna pass... :sleep:

    Edit: Okay forget it. The gun by itself is $150, and that does not include the headset and Steam gaming PC. Still pretty creative and looks like fun. I wish they had kiosks somewhere so I could demo it. :P

    Duck Season uses the old Sci-Fi/Horror trope of getting sucked into the game/show by using the telivision screen as a portal. Kid is trapped inside the tv game shooting ducks, and reality starts to go south quick.


  6. Since the DIY kit has a Pi with a hat, or daughter card, I would like to make a guess.

    The ways the consoles have implemented movement controllers, mixed with the way the NES does it, is enough to make a guess.

    I believe the Pi thing was a separate dumper/emulator device for interfacing an SNES cartridge.

  7. It's about darn time! If it works with the AVS then this is gonna make a whole lot of people very, very happy... or not. Hyperkin doesn't exactly have the best track record when it comes to quality.

    I can say that Hyperkin, as well as Retrobit and Yobo, are a mixed bag. The Super Retro Trio 3-in-1 is one of the best clones I've seen, despite the slight audio defects on the nes side. Retron5 is hot garbage. So is the Retrobit Generations 60-in-1. But the Hyperkin laser snes mouse is amazing!

     

    We just don't know enought about this device yet to pass judgement. It is highly likely it may use a calibrated Wii-like sensor system for the HDTV and require a composite feed to calculate the exact moment the gun will register a hit based upon it's current coordinate. Eithr way, I am excited, albeit slightly disappointed if it requires an analog input just to output hd upgraded visuals. Thag would never be NT quality. :grin:

  10. Yeah there's no dip switch settings in Galaxian that I'm aware of. You just have to play the right romset. When it comes to the "proper" Galaxian there's the easier version (which get plenty hard eventually), and the difficult version like galaxian.zip in Mame, or the one put in the Arcade1up.

     

    It's kind of like Pengo.. did you ever play the hard version of Pengo? :lol: It's crazy how the snowbees make a beeline directly to you. I feel sorry for people trying to check Pengo out for the first time and unknowingly staring up that version first. Ditto for Galaxian. :)

    Never played Pengo but despite I feel confident in my Galaga abilities, it seems so strange that I can suck so hard at Galaxian which has simpler mechanics and slower gameplay by all metrics. If I ever get off my ass and fix my Porta Pi Mame, I'll fire up the alt version sometime.

     

    I wonder if Namco, Atari, et al actually provided the original ROMs to 1Up Arcade, or if they just grabbed them from pirated repositories. Even Nintendo used iNES headers in their VC ROMs. Assuming the "hard" versions of ROMs were real, and could not be adjusted with DIP switches, which arcades had them? I imagine it would confuse gamers to kick ass in one arcade and get ass kicked in another arcade, playing the same game. Then again, bootleg cabs and unlicensed conversions were everywhere. Maybe the hard version had shady origin?

     

    Companies releasing these product need to figure their sh*t out so we don't have to for them. I am glad for one Nintendo lets gamers choose USA or Japan for stage layout in Donkey Kong Switch for instance.

That is because you are playing the very difficult version of Galaxian where the yellow ship + escorts attack almost immediately and things get intense very quickly into the FIRST round. :lol: I'm not sure how this version of Galaxian became to be known today as "Galaxian.zip" in mame (and thus is the set included in the arcade1up cab).. but it is not the Galaxian I know with the much more relaxed difficulty curve. For that one, play "galaxiana.zip" also known as "Namco Set 2" attached below and see the difference. It's a split rom so you might need the original galaxian.zip files.

    Honestly I'd rather just play NES Galaxian on my tiny 6 inch My Arcade cab than the 4 foot 1UP. There are no "dip switch" options to speak of. Even botique recreations like the $200 quarter scale Pacman cabs got the options wrong with 5 lives and 15000 pts extra man. I seriously doubt there's any way to replace the ROMs on these cabs. And modding them into a glorified PiMame machine by hijacking the monitor inputs defeats the purpose of buying a legit licensed cab to begin with.

     

    Everytime I try to knock out the diving Galaxian formations, I get spammed by up to six missiles (two per ship). In order to get the 800 point bonus, I gotta hit them in order (Galaxian last) and not miss. Miss the Galaxian or hit it first, and you get a puny bonus. And the points awarded by picking them off one by one in formation (ala Space Invaders) and simply avoiding the divers altogether is paltry in comparison. Going for the 800 pt bonus is basically suicide. I keep thinking I can make it out of the way if I don't clear them, but get spamjed with the bullet spreads.

     

    Despite the action being faster and more frantic in Galaga, I am making it past the third bonus round (dragonflies, stage 11) fairly frequently. And I'm often able to nap the big bonus for killing triple enemies in the higher rounds. It does not feel unfair as in Galaxian, or like I'm entering a deathtrap. I nearly beat stage 18 when I hit my top score of 111k. Another time I got perfect twice on the first to bonus stages but only made it to 101k. Didn't make it quite as far that time.

     

    I've been working on a series of video clips which I am going to stitch into a detailed review of the 1up machine, as well as mods to upgrade the controls and varnish the overlay. Holidays have been hectic with full time job, fiance, shopping, hobbies, so the editing got put on the backburner. Most youtube guys gloss over Galaxian altogether like it doesn't matter, so I will be sure to mention the brutal difficulty.


  12. First off, Led Zepplin rocks. They were also huge Tolkien fans decades before it was fashionable to be a Tolkein fan. They weren't afraid to experiment with ideas with each new album. IMO, rock in general took a turn for the worst in the 90s. They got soft (alternative) or too hard with ridiculous amounts of distortion (grunge). Sure good bands existed. Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers were good examples of alternative. But gone were the intricate riffs and rock ballads of old.

     

    Moving on. Galaxian was a spiritual sequel to Space Invaders. No shields, enemies still move back and forth, but instead of slowly descending, they dive bomb mercilessly like Kamikazes. And despite the game's slow pace, it is mercilessly hard. You get very little points unless you hit enemies while in formation. I rarely survive past the first wave or two on my 1up arcade, and still haven't gotten the 7000 point score threshold.

     

    Galaga was by and large perfection. The dance like formations evoke symmetry and order, yet the dive bombing insects evoke pure chaos. Bonus rounds are icing on the cake. The double ship was a revolutionary concept. Not only does it eat a life, but you get double the fire power whilst also being a larger target. The gameplay is balanced, predictable yet surprising, and lots of stage variety. The challenge ramps up but I don't feel like I've wasted my credit when I die. My top score is over 100k.

     

    Gaplus is a frustrating mess. One of the very last Virtual Console games I downloaded for Wii. Most stages I don't even make it past the intro. And unlike Galaga, you start over to the beginning of the formation if you don't survive until all enemies are in position. It's like playing Gyruss (itself a spiritual successor to Tempest) on one side of the screen without being able to fly around full circle. A frustrating mess. No wonder they came back with a reboot of Galaga in '88.

    Personally if you don't mind dropping the $300 on a torn down, cleaned, parts replaced, caps replaced, etc CG2+SCD2 combo unit from that guy, all you'll need after that is the $90 everdrive, and a stack of CDRs and you're set if you don't want to line the pockets of aftermarket gouging swindlers yet want to use all original hardware. After that I'd drop the CD drive, get the Upergrafx2 from that Japanese dude, and go that route as the latest firmware updates now run HuCards and optical making it a digital equal to the terraonion rca cable device.

    Yet one thing I can say never enough, don't buy a US unit, there's no value in it at all. The HuCard library in the US is 1/3 the size and largely crap compared to Japan. While optical isn't locked, cards are, so be smart about that.

    As others have chimed in, your cheapest option is to get a Coregrafx, fashion an AV cable out of a 5-pin Midi cable, and some shielded RCA cables for video. Buy an Everdrive from Krikzz, Stonagegamer, or Retrogate. Skip collecting Hucards as they are expensive, even now for the Japanese games.

    If you are thinking about getting into CD collecting, be prepared to pay an assload for recapped and refurbished hardware. Nearly all surviving CD or Duo units have rotten gears, leaking/dried caps and will not function without serious modding. Sadly, unlike with Megadrive, some of the best games on the system are CD based. If you insist on getting into the CD game, skip the CD burner, refurbished hardware, and buy this (currently unavailable):

    I got a US model Turbografx in 2014 just as the prices were starting to balloon. I was able to procure an Everdrive, several games, a region adapter, more import games, a couple of bootlegs, two pads, a turbobooster, and a 3d printed composite output. By around the end of 2015, I stopped collecting. Most of the games I wanted but didn't have were out of reach, and now the imports have ballooned as well. I'm still Hucard only and will likely remain so as no affordable alternative for CDs is available. It's still a great system and I am happy with my collection. Also if you are looking for an easy way to store loose Hucards, Baseball sleeves work well.

    I made some changes to that sound now, I think it depends on how fast the spinner is spinning regarding if the sound is continuous or not. Having said that, I did make it longer, and started the sound upon the ball hitting the spinner, rather than just when it turns. I did keep the same voice however.

     

    @imstarryeyed - The spinners do work backward, I got it to sound off. However the ball is usually (in my experience) much slower going through the spinner in reverse, so that might be the reason... Now that I've started the sound when the ball hits it, it should act as expected.

     

     

     

    1. I'd like to make it as close to the arcade as possible, within my abilities. The only change I did was for the 'classic' monster AI, as it bugged me that they made the monsters so different here. (It also makes it a little easier).

     

    2. I'll look into that. Truth be told, it's not actually a timer, it's only until all 4 monsters are out of the pen. (I check the status of the last monster). I know this can create a scenario where if the last monster gets eaten, they move randomly until he gets out. I kind of like that. (Only in 'Classic' Monster AI mode.)

    I agree with the changes made. Baby Pacman needs to be fun for extended console play sessions, not a masochistic quarter gobbler. Fixing the monster AI or making SDTM ball drains less frequent, will make this game more accessible in the long run. Making power pellets reappear on subsequent stages will act like classic Pacman. Collect four dots in the pinball table, then go into the maze and chomp ghosts...

  17. If you like platforming, you can't go wrong with Little Big Planet (all three titles). Great platformer where you can also design your own levels using assets you collected while playing single player mode. Get the GOTY editions if possible as they have a ton of good DLC included on the disc. Even when the multiplayer servers eventually get canned, there's still tons of fun stuff to do in single player mode.

     

    Also try 3D Dot Heroes. It's a fun Adventure/RPG hidden gem on the system, largely inspired by Zelda Link to the Past. Everything in the universe is made up of voxels and it has an editor to design your own characters.


  18. I am more use to playing LBP on my PSP, but recently when I finally decided to buy a PS3 I also decided to get LBP for that as well. I thought it was just me as I played to the levels and thought a lot did not seem right.

    I haven't touched Sackboy in a while. Are the PS3 multiplayer servers still online for LBP, LBP2, LBP3, and Karting?

  19. I don't get the whole 11 day old post thing, not everybody logs in everyday... some only log in once a month or every few weeks. I believe all have a voice, not just the ones with a direct response feed.

    To be honest I was on my phone using the mobile site very late at night, possibly under the influence of intoxicating beverage, and wasn't aware there were seven more pages beyond the first. I really shouldn't be "feeding the trolls" either... :roll:

    I didn't read all the verbiage, but they seem to have a very good, well paid graphic designer at the helm. Maybe show some evidence you have competent hardware/software engineers? It's like reading a brochure of production apps which you can never afford, only they are all free.
