  1. Thanks, Guys!

...and thanks Alan for posting :)

Here's a quick manual I whipped up. Did I miss anything?

Bob, I think you should clarify the second and third paragraph in 'Playing The Game'. Only Frenzy has the walls the ricochet and Crazy Otto can be killed, but not Evil Otto. As it reads, someone who had not seen these games would be confused. In the 'Helpful Hints' area I would clarify that only the 'dot walls' can be used to shoot your way out. Maybe the best way to deal with these is to move them to the 'Differences Section'?

  2. Hi I'm the Alan McNeil that designed the games. Bob contacted me quite a while back when just starting the project.

I'm advising and suggesting changes to this project. Glad to see my old games finally make it onto an Atari in a decent version.

This is fun for me because it's a lot less work suggesting a change than coding it.

Glad to see a few players out there still want to play the classics.

Alan-thanks for posting and a special thanks for working with Bob. Berzerk is definitely a classic and a favorite of many of us. We are greatful to Bob and folks like yourself who give and expect nothing in return (just so that rest of us can have some fun)!

  3. A big thanks to BigO!!! It was a 4052 multiplexer chip. Since my unit is a 4 port and there were (4) 4052's, I assumed that it was one for each controller. So I swapped the number 1 with the number 4 and now I'm back in buisiness. I'll still want to replace the bad one even though I'll never use ports 3 & 4, I just like having everything working like original.

Congrats on getting your 5200 running again...you should be able to pick up a cheap donor unit on ebay and restore yours to full health!

  4. Does it continue when you release the pause button?

Probably the problem is that the 7800 is cannot be auto detected when you play the game via Harmony (on the TODO list for the next Harmony BIOS version). The final cart will of course not have this problem.

Thomas-yes, it will only pause for as long as I hold the button...glad you know about it...I haven't found any other issues...great game!!!

  5. Really enjoying this and getting a little better with some practice...ok, maybe I found a bug...I re-read the entire thread, so I hope I didn't miss anything...I am playing the latest build (140) with my Harmony cart and my 7800. When I try to pause the game, it flashes 'paused', but keeps going.

  6. I got sick and tired of my joystick not working correctly so I took out the dome contacts and installed microswitches inside. The stick feels like it works a lot better now. This has worked well enough that I think I'm going to modify the rest of my joysticks for this. Has anybody else done this before? And if so what results did you find?

    post some pictures!

  7. Not to hijack the thread, but we are still missing some classics like: Missile Command, Millipede, Kangaroo, Defender, Warlords, Tempest & Zaxxon to name a few...it would be great to see Ken, Bob, or Perry work on one or more of these!

If I had to vote for one remake, it would be (and don't laugh) Pole Position II. Love the game and it could even better with voice, improved graphics, and the option to use the racing controller!

  8. As long as you have the switchbox for a four-port, and it works, there's no problems with having a four-port 5200 instead of a two-port, IMO.

The box will not electrocute you or burn your house down. It's totally safe. People like to exaggerate for humor, I guess.

I actually like the switch box with the 4 port. I have it directly connected to my TV. My 7800 feeds into the antenna part of the box and my Flashback 2 into the AV ports. Thus, I have three game systems plugged into one TV and never have to move wires around!

  9. @mmervine- Hey! 1. The arcade also does this (it was done purposely to mimic the arcade version) 2. Unfortunately, like the 5200 version of Berzerk, this has to happen. The voice takes up all processing time. 3. Also unfortunately, I don't think this will be possible. :( Only a handful of words made the program jump from 32K to 48K, and I still need to add some more words for game play.

Where's those 128K 7800 boards when we need them?

  10. Yeah, and the cost to ship is nearly that or even equal to that, so unless it's a local deal, it renders them nearly valueless. That's why I just kept my original dead ones when I bought the Best Gold ones.

I was lucky enough to travel out to San Jose for business...I took 3 dead controllers with me and just handed them to Bradley...

  11. Had a chance to test the latest build this morning. Other than the things that Bob said that he is working on, I didn't notice any big issues. A couple of comments:

    1. After the player dies, the game sometimes continues for a second or two (not sure if this is intentional or not)

    2. Game stops whenever there is voice synthesis (I assume that this is to be expected) then resumes

    3. Would be really coll if, at the title screen, we would sometimes hear 'coin detected in pocket'!

  12. Bob-just gave this a spin with Pro-system...looking really good! I played Berzerk about a million times on my 2600 and in the arcade...I can't remember ever playing Frenzy...wow...I missed out...what an awesome game! Can't wait to see the finished product and slide that cart into my 7800!!! You the man!!!!!!!!! :D
