  1. Thanks very much! I thought I WASN'T going to have to but I may actually have to do that. The TV seems to have a mono mode which devotes both speakers to the white in--very nice right? Problem is every time I turn off the TV the setting resets to the default--stereo--setting. Or maybe it when I unplug it completely, but either way very annoying! Easy fix though with the adapter as you say.
  2. I always wanted one of these things as a kid: A dedicated NES stand. I've seen this thing twice as an adult, or at least a version of it, and they were both (unsurprisingly I guess) kind of beat. Like, really beat. And wobbly. So I got a Philips TV the other day by chance and I noticed it was a very nice Nintendo grey. Then I happened to look at a laptop cart I had in the shop. It was also a nice NES grey, or damn close. This thing: And I figured OK I can just make some version of a NES cart myself using those metal brackets. Now it got WAY off what I originally intended it to be (projects can be like that as you know) and I ended up with this: I mounted the Four Score flush on the bottom. As a kid I could not stand to have controller cords dangling in front of the screen and still can't. The other benefit is I therefore have turbos for the stock NES controllers; but a drawback (which I did not realize at the time!) is that Zappers do NOT work through the Four Score. I wasn't SUPER happy with the quality of the bottom chrome decals (bad stickem) but you order non-licensed decals from Greece over eBay, I guess you take your chances. The white decal on the games section was much higher quality. I had two of those old Nuby cart holders in a box so a few coats of spray paint later they were a nice touch. It can hold 20 games total, not counting the one IN the NES. It is ROCK solid but heavy as a load of bricks, mostly because of the TV but I also used dimensional lumber and 3/4 inch ply scraps I had lying around to build it so there is some wood weight there too. So it's portable (part of my original concept) only on one floor (thanks to the wheels) or if you have two strong dudes to pick it up! The power strip is mounted to the wood and with the extra connections open it is very easy to plug any old console you have lying around into this thing. I used a metallic/hammered spray paint for the dark gray which has a nice effect but the camera didn't pick it up much. Oddly, I sanded the bejeezus out of the joints up top and thought they were GONE but the paint revealed every single one. Damn. You might notice it is very low to the ground....I did this largely for safety reasons (I have two young boys who would love to tip over a heavy TV on their heads) but it also works as when I recline in my chair it give me the perfect angle. And I will say there is just something about sitting on the floor to play NES that just seems.....right. Quick, someone get me a yoohoo! I keep calling it "this thing". I feel like it needs an official name. The Nintendo Entertainment Center? The NES Mothership? The Nintendo Gamecube (it is a square!) ? I dunno, but please let me know if you have any ideas and give your thoughts in general. I am always looking to improve my next project!
  3. I would say mostly no BUT I will say that when I see something "in the wild" that is wildly under valued (which still happens now and then) I snag it, even if I am not really interested in it. Not that this is collectible BUT I saw an Xbox light gun at the goodwill...2 bucks, same gun goes for 15-20 on ebay....I had 0 use for it but maybe I would someday....snagged it. Have done the same with certain NES games I had no actual interest in or need for.
  4. Buddy of mine just beat it in one sitting right in front of me after not playing it for 15+ years. Which kind of ticked me off since I have NEVER beaten it. He just sat down cold and did it. Somewhat kinda sorta related....Arm Wrestling is also a fun game in the same style I recently discovered. Though I suck more at that than i do at punch-out.
  5. Yeah these are in our local Rite Aid ads for BF too. "Exclusive" indeed. It was sold out last year so I got the home ones (they were cheap). Hope to get the portable this year.
  6. That is a brilliant idea--that I have now stolen.
  7. Jeez somehow I missed this War of the Monsters game. Seeing you guys bring it up I checked it out and decided I have to get that!
  8. I love video game projects of any kind and have considered using super common carts to make wall mosaics or something in the past. I like when people use video game stuff in weird ways. That being said, those tings above are stupid, hideous, and hard to read as time pieces!
  9. I LOVED Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee for the Gamecube, and I didn't love too many gamecube games. Great game and worked nicely on the controller. It is 100x better than Godzilla unleashed on the PS2 IMO.
  10. I found a nice JVC D-series 27 inch TV on the side of the road with the old "free" sign on it. Multiple hookups, even a component hook up. Just what I needed for my cobbled together arcade stand. And it all seems to work but damn this thing is disgustingly filthy (smoker I think). YUCK! Gonna take some work but free is free. Hopefully it looks like this again when I am done:
  11. I'd support a NES sub-forum. I also think it would be pretty active. Yes, there are a million other Nintendo sites, including Nintendo Age. So what? That means we can't have organized NES conversation or a NES community here?
  12. My rule has always been if I have no interest in playing it for more than say, 20 minutes then I don't buy it. And Every once in a while I cull the weak sisters of the collection out if I know I won't play them any more. Saw a very decent deal on a Jaguar system locally a week ago...almost scooped it in "gotta have'em all" mode...then said..."am I really going to play this?" The answer being a resounding NO!, I moved on and bought more NES games I would play.
  13. Mike Tyson's Punch Out! Adventure Island SilkWorm All NES
  14. Oh and I just found out the hard way that Zappers do not work through Four Scores! WTH! At least it wasn't broken, which is what I thought at first.
  15. You guys seem worried about power drainage...at the end of the day, what do you think this really adds up to on your elec bill? Not like turning off the switch is hard but I am guessing it is costing me nickels leaving it all on when it's all said an done. I just leave the stuff on.
  16. I use two large surge protectors, one in each plug. One has 8 plugs (monster) and the other has 12 (monoprice). Two of the monoprice ones would give you 24 plugs (obviously) which is a good amount. granted this does not look neat but where I have it I don't care...it could easily be made neat with some velcro or zip ties. The monoprice one is nice as it has 4 spots for the BIG plugs and two usb power ports.
  17. Wow, I was thinking one of these would be good for my son...seeing the price of ANY of the older ones on Amazon maybe I should just stockpile them as currency. LOL.
  18. Almost finished with my all-in-one NES cabinet thingy...now I just need to find time to play it. And name it!

Will do when I finish assembly tonight! Paint is drying now so short some decals I have in the mail, that will be it.

  19. NP man! I admit the idea of two of the ports just being "there" but totally pointless kind of bugs me! I just think the finished product would look better. Not sure!
  20. Loon, the Genesis pads definitely work on the SMS. Though I read there ARE a handful of games which don't work, maybe 6 or 7. The extension cables definitely work to extend Genesis controllers off of a SMS (I do it now so I can sit further away on my old setup)--but they won't look as nice mounted (even if 2 of the 4 ports would be superfluous anyway!). The Sega tap in particular worries me...it has a switch for differing modes (maybe like the Four Score has a switch for 2 or 4 player mode?) and I guess I could see that somehow causing an issue. The EA tap has no switches AND design wise fits my application WAY better (would be easier for me to mount forward facing mostly). Looks like I can get one you know where for only like 8$....I may just bite the bullet. If it doesn't work...well now I have one for my collection, which is good. I guess. Ha.
  21. So far as a port re-locator? I realize there's no four player SMS games...the goal here would be to relocate where I can plug the controllers in. I am building kind of a "portable" (or at least mobile) CRT gaming station. Hidden wires being a big part of it. System sits right above my TV, that's where I want it for display and my design leaves no room anywhere else anyway....so each time I play the cords need to be routed to the side (where they are visible and it would need to be done each time, don't like that) and they still kind of hang or swing in the way. Using the multitap, either the Sega one or the Electronic Arts one, would allow me to hide all the multitap cords in the guts of the cabinet and plug in under the TV, which I would much prefer (I am setting up a nes in this thing too using a four score this way). I see no reason this would not work since it is of course the same pin pattern and the whole deal. Chances are I'd be using a Genesis pad actually, since I like them better than the SMS one. If not I have simple extension cables with ports so big on the end they'd look ok mounted and recessed. But a Four Score on one side for the NES and an EA Genesis tap for the SMS (I like the design better than the sega one) on the other would have a very nice symmetry and therefore a much better look overall.
  22. Cop out answer but depends on the kid IMO. My kids are only 3 and 5...could they be ready for such a game as a teen? Sure. Might they not be ready as a teen? Also, sure.
  23. Well not a thrift store find, more of a video game pawn shop trade, but I traded a bunch of new dvds for Ys, Wonder Boy 3, and Phantasy Star 1, all SMS, all with cases and (slightly waterstained) manuals.
  24. I think a lot of people just feel 8 and 16 bit is the retro gaming sweet spot. Frankly I agree. It's past so basic we're talking blocks for graphics and blips and boops for sound, but before things got immensely complex gameplay, story, and production value wise. 100% honest, I find 99% of any single player 2600 game as shallow as a puddle. Multiplayer is a dif story. I think fiddlepaddles comparison above about black and white films vs new stuff is an apt one. Though frankly I find the line so big between Atari and NES I'd consider it more silent film vs. new stuff.
