Have played and owned both, and can definitely say that the Wii anthology is an excellent value, but can grow tiresome and irritating given the unfortunate control restrictions. Metal Slug X on the PS1 is a mandatory purchase for both ps1 owners and Metal Slug fans. The controls are spot on, there is no gameplay slowdown of any note as compared to certain other Slug releases (PSP esp.), and the game is very easy to complete with the given amount of lives. What truly sets apart the PS1 release is that it contains several extra features that can be played, such as extra bonus mini-missions. To my knowledge these have never been made available in any other version of Metal Slug X, nor are they in any of the various compilations and anthologies of the series. And it is still very affordable- sealed copies can easily be had on EBay for under $50 or so. One key difference between the two exists: the PS1 release of MSX seems to have been specifically tweaked for the system, whereas the Wii and PSP and PS2 compilations seem to emulate the arcade versions and suffer from noticeable slowdown and load times that don't seem present (at least to me) on thePs1 Metal Slug X.
I never noticed any slowdown on anything on the PS2 Compilation. Which level did you notice slow down on?
Just generally with the Wii and PS2 versions, when playing them on an LCD (admittedly an El-Cheapo one,) there seemed to be some lag in between when I'd press the buttons and when something would happen on screen, and with the Wii version sometimes the sensor bar wouldn't pick up my actions and controller shakes. Now the PSP compilation would suddenly stop to load or slowdown in almost EVERY level of all the games on it, and I eventually stopped playing that version. It is still the only time I've ever been disappointed by anything Metal Slug related, and I had really looked forward to it.
Blame the set.... everything (and I mean 100% of every system - UNLESS it was software specific, some games are laggy) runs with no discernible lag on CRT... every LCD and every Plasma (even the "best of the best") has noticeable lag, even if it is minute on the best of sets. Nothing compares to the ultra insane fast response of CRT. What you encountered was caused by the set, not by the game.

My favorite Collection of all time. What's up, John!

One of these days, I hope to 'maybe' see it in person....
Seriously though, considering what John has gone through to put this together, how long it's taken him, how he's come into owning most of these pieces, and the fact that he's the most humble Gamer/Collector I've met - is what makes his Collection stand shoulders above the rest imho.

Of course, I agree it is unrealistic to think any handheld could perfectly reproduce arcade controls. Some games are obviously better suited for conversion, like Ghosts n Goblins. Others will never be able to get a 10/10... maze games like Pac-Man need a real joystick to experience the nuances and techniques possible in the game... Pong with a joystick simply can't be perfect, etc.. However, the controls can be optimized as best as possible. If we accept that some game controls cannot be literally translated, that opens an entire new world of possibilities.
A perfect example of this is the tried-and-true Defender adaptation for home consoles in the 80s that is still used today. No reverse button, but the joystick direction controls both thrust and direction. It's not accurate to the arcade, and it's not perfect, but it works pretty well and makes Defender very playable on a handheld.
Another possibility... adjust the dead zones and sensitivity of the analog nub to be best for each individual game. There's no reason why the analog input should react the same when playing Pong and Centipede, especially when those machines didn't even use the same input hardware. I think that if developers had paid a little more attention to the nuances of the source material and the destination hardware, the end results would have been a little better. Sure, it would still be impossible to give Centipede a 10/10 on the PSP, but at least it would be better than the 4/10 I would currently give to the version in Atari Classics Evolved...
That is a brilliant point, and I see what you're talking about now... spot on! I didn't think about how important calibration can be for the Analog stick, you're completely on point with regard to that!
right on, I concur 100% - if the Devs had taken the time to give each title some specific TLC on the controls, there's no telling how much more solid some of those old games would feel.

Wow, what a wall! I would like to see the same pic, but with clarity... can't make out much because the pic is so blurry. Is that all Jag stuff on the lower right?

No it's not Jag, it's Sears
And a very nice one.......................
I don't know what that means...? Sears specific published 2600 titles
Please pardon my ignorance, don't feed me to the lions...Sorry I didn't realize.............Atari licensed the 2600 and many games to Sears for distribution under the Sears Tele-games brand. All the cart boxes are black except for Superman which is blue. I believe the relationship between them started with the Pong console.
Anyways do an internet search on it. There's a ton of info out in cyberspace.

No worries, thanks for the info! Looks super neat... any chance we could all get a high def/crisp pic to take a look at? Your current pic is pretty blurry for me...

It's kind of like gambling....don't go broke.
Me I'm a different breed of collector. I'm a pure reseller/trade collector. Meaning I scour craigslist, yardsales, thriftstores and buy anything and everything that is a steal.
I then keep what I want and sell off the rest to break even or make a profit. Sometimes I'll sell it all and recoup what I have in it and then take the leftover $$ and by something nice with it.
This is really the best way to do it. Then again you constantly have to be selling and getting that $$ back. Another tactic I use is I sell all the high value items and then weed out the systems and commons and trade them for credit at my gamestore. I then get rare titles or new stuff w/that credit.
In the end all I have invested is time and sometimes I make a little $$ in the process.
Are you Rarebucky?

So... all games that aim to be photo-realistic need photo-realism to properly convey emotions? Seems a fairly narrow subset, and even then it's an artistic cop-out. If you want me to feel something about your characters, you won't do it by showing me every pore and twitch. You'll do it by moving me with their actions; this can be done with a modicum of technology.
A lazy story teller shows photo-realistic tears running down a man's face to show the audience he's sad. A better story teller shows the man stoic and solitary, looking at his lost love from a distance as life goes on around her.
In the final scene of the Sega CD game "Heart of the Alien", I welled up. The ending of that game stayed with me for days, in the way than only a good movie or novel can. Eric Chahi managed to do that because he invested time in demonstrating the lead characters' relationship in a cinematic way; I cared about them and their ultimate fate because they cared about each other... Masterful storytelling, without a drop of photorealism in sight.
I hope you're a game developer, because I like the way you think!

Wow, that sounds really lame. I still haven't bought the game... it never came down enough to suit me, considering they never figured out how to eliminate Tearing from the reviews I read. Sorry Sony, GTA 1-4 called and they want their non tearing experience back.
I don't understand how anyone supported that game, at the demo level (was a big enough joke), but then it comes out with tearing and other framerate issues, after being in development for soooo long... sorry, they failed, and it looks like I'll be skipping out on part 5 which feels ridiculous to me because I own the other 4, and they're all such awesome games.
360 took the edge driving wise (for me) with watchamadoodle part 3 (4 looks rad, but more same of 3, so I'll stick with 3)... Forza. Locked V-Sync, incredibly reliable frame rates, tons of cars/tracks.... pretty much what I was hoping GT5 to be.
If the Tears get to be too much for you, and you end up selling GT5 ('if' you haven't chcked out F. 3 yet), then you should definitely take a look at Forza 3. I don't know if 4 maintains all the pros of 3 or not... I'm sticking with 3, I've put 30-40 hrs in, and have barely scratched the surface. Got that one for $20 at Frys... and GT5 is still at $40... go figure.

I might as well start boycotting almost every major company in the world and be a caveman living in a cave because almost every major company in the world has done something questionable at some point in its history intentionally or unintentionally.

One of the best Puzzle games ever created imho. Also one of my first puzzle games!!

Hi, I got a loose 32X with boxed copies of NBA Jam TE, Cosmic Carnage, PGA 36 Holes, RBI Baseball '95 and Motocross Championship for $40. Good deal or not? Anyway, now that I have one, what are your favorites for this?
Depends on the condition and completeness of what you received.
For the 32x, Shadow Squadron is badass! The Sonic game is strange, but feels like a must, Star Wars is a jam... past that, the 2 big must haves imho are Space Harrier (I know there's a flawless version for the S. but this port rocks on the 32x) and After Burner.
-
the SuperGrafx?? 5 or 6 games total
next to that, the 32x or the 32xCD stuff as someone else already mentioned

I noticed you feel that quite a large number of titles are average. I disagreed with the majority of your assessments on those.

I respect gamers with high standards, but giving the Capcom Comp an average rating was pretty harsh imo.
Such a badass comp.Reviewing games is an interesting hobby
"Average" isn't a bad rating... and many "average" titles are some of my personal favorites. Being a personal favorite doesn't make a game excellent, though -- it just means I like it. Many games that I've been sucked into, like Go Sudoku or Gunpey, have a lot of flaws that I'm willing to personally overlook but prevent me from giving stellar ratings. For most of the arcade compilations, including the Capcom titles, I am unable to get past the control problems almost all of these collections have on the PSP. Part of the problem is the PSP layout, part is the physical controller hardware, part is poor adaptation by the developers to the PSP controls. Regardless, I found massive dissatisfaction trying to play many arcade games. These problems are not insurmountable, as proven by Taito Legends which controls well -- and at the opposite end of the spectrum is Atari Classics. The Capcom games look and sound great, but IMO the controls are still too imprecise. Midway plays well, but when scaled up looks like ass.
When your tried-and-true moves, tricks, and combos are all but impossible to execute... to me that means something is flawed. The physical PSP controls are part of the problem, but the other (and I think larger) issue is developer laziness to fine-tune their games to the PSP. This was evident throughout the PSP's life, especially with PSP ports of games released on other systems. I don't think the developers had the desire to do anything more than what was "good enough" for titles released across multiple systems... and unfortunately, that applies to most of the arcade compilations which were released on every system available at the time. It has been proved many times that the PSP controls are not inherently impossible to use for arcade gaming, so I can only conclude there was a lack of developer desire to make some titles control better...
You explain yourself extremely well, and have your points laid out in clear and easy to understand language. I see that you harp on the control aspect more than anything, and I'm left pondering that thought.... how much better can the controls be for old arcade games?
Anything on the Capcom Classics Comp for example: if the D-Pad makes a character go in said direction, reliably w/no discernible lag, then is the control properly optimized or is there something else that should/needs to be done in order to "pefect" the control schemes? I'm curious what you mean by "bad controls" in more specific terms.
You mention not being able to perform certain combos, I assume you're referring to fighter games... well, I'm not surprised as Sony has (imho) never made a D-Pad that's condusive to playing fighters. I think to have the expectation that classic games (that were predominately controlled with D-Pads or strong arcade sticks) are going to control/feel the same as their arcade originals, is unrealistic.... 'unless' there are specifc control parameters/requirements you have for said games that I'm unaware of.
(interesting convo for me, thks)

The moooost fun I've had with any fighting games online, eeeespecially MvC 2 on the PSN... is to block non stop, and only use weak strikes. Try jumping non stop, and blocking the entire match making the "pro" think he's soon to get a perfect... and then at the last second... hit him with a weak punch of kick.
I love doing that to people... they get sooo mad
(lol) The best is playing with a mic, and talking **** the whole match while doing ^... doesn't get any better. I love Multi Player!
then you're not trying to win. you're just trolling the game...
If upsetting my opponent is tantamount to winning, "for me"... then in my mind, I'm winning every match.
Sometimes, I'll just sit there in the corner, and some players will attempt to wait me out.... lol.... I've walked away from the system to take a leak before, came back, and someone has sent me a message about how I ruined 5 mins of their life, lol.... never gets old

Seems like the guy was speaking his mind.... I thank him for it! Doesn't look like it trash talks Blizzard at all.... just lays it out according to the way he sees it, which is fine by me.

You have got to be fucking kidding me.
There are just so many things wrong with this.
Of course your not fucking satisfied but big surprise with that. So here let me show you something else from Blizzards site: http://us.blizzard.c...SPEC&rhtml=true
You see that? Right there in the requirements? The part where it says a Broadband Internet connection is a minimum system requirement.
Or here: http://us.blizzard.c...l?id=1100001122
Where it states directly under the box shot "Internet connection required".
That's it nothing about requiring it for verification and what's on the box is on damn box whether you like it or not.
Also since you conveniently ignored this in your last post let me reiterate once again:
You do not need to go online if you are using a guest account and if using said guest account you do not need to re-login every month.
Finally well you hit the conclusion I was trying to make then completely missed my point. No shit it isn't official solution but it is a solution and I felt it worthwhile to point out as a working alternative when I initially posted the link you ignored.
Sorry for the language everyone...
There is no need to curse.
"However, offline play for single player is available as long as your copy of StarCraft II has been logged into Battle.net within the last few weeks."
That is taken right from Blizzard... so it looks like they're being open about the requirement.
http://lone0001.ca/gallery/Unboxings/Starcraft_2_Unboxing/P7270174.JPG
Ok, I stand corrected... I remembered it saying something else.
I have read that even with the guest account, the software attempts to force the user to log into Battlenet and has issues allowing the player to load the game absent "checking/logging in w/battlenet". The petition I read about was specifically related to that issue.
There are still two more EXPansions slated for release... so I'm a looooong ways away from buying SC II. Hopefully, in 2-3 years time when the full version is released for $49.99, it'll have no issues for people wanting to play offline. I can wait, I still play SC 1 and WC III.

One of my favorite video games magazines of all time (during the 8&16 bit Eras, they were excellent!). However... I did not enjoy watching the quality of the writing dwindle down lower and lower throughout the last 13+ years.

It seems there's way too few players still into the game, so you're bascically playing against those 1-2 people that are online at a time, regardless of skill. I got repeatedly trashed within seconds by several of the Top 10 ranked players so far and I only had a handful of matches against players in my league. So far I won 6 matches with Ryu, 1 with Ken and scored another 10 when the opponent quitted during the game.
I can see that it's no fun for a pro to play against me, but it is not much fun for me either. The most fun it is against players that are on the same level. But I understand that I'm very late for this game.

Nintendo is so far behind tech wise, that I can see where this guys assessment stems from.
-
I wonder if it'll upscale old Wii games? They look far nicer at 1280x800+ than you'd expect. If the Wii-U pulled that off, well, it'd be like the Wii we should've had seven years ago.
Totally agree, that would be sweet.
Edit: Nevermind. As usual Nintendo disappoints.
http://www.1up.com/n...ook-nicer-wii-u
Since the above is old news I hope they still do it.
VERY good point, guys... I agree ten fold!!!
I knew there was something I wanted to add... that's what it was.The Wii U imho, should be able to play 'all' Wii games with 4xAA... I'll live if they're the same resolutions... I simply want AA for my Wii Catalogue!!! If they did that, I would quit playing Wii games on the Wii. But seeing as that would be too much value for money, N. will most likely not entertain such an idea.
-
This I do not understand... they already released a pair of Compilations to cover this... and now a, "all in one" comp... if they need money this badly, why not just come out and start charging for access to the PSN, imo... it'd be less insulting.
Publishers do this all the time. They take all there games and box them. Grand Theft Auto. Gears of War. Metal Gear Solid. You name it. This is just another box set.
For people who have none of them and want them. Its a good deal.
The vouchers hurt it but everything seems to be going digital it seems.
I think Sony also wanted to add 3D to GOW3. Not sure why they couldnt have done it as a patch or add on or something.
Really? I've never seen an IP packaged up as many times as God of War - it seems extremely redundant at this point.

I don't game on phones, so can't respond to OP inquiry...
Still trying to track down the Battle Lode Runner for the PCE... hasn't been easy to find one in great shape.

That screen looks horrid up close... I can stare at my 17" Mag from a mm away and it looks pristine. CRT will always look crisper, from up close, and from farther away. LCD and Plasma is meh compared to CRT up close... sucks
I'm kind of jealous that you have seen it in person. I have only seen it on Youtube. Where did you see it at?
?
They zoomed in, in the video.
TVs don't look that good through cameras anyway, since the pixels on the camera and tv aren't 1:1 and the tv's resolution is much higher than the cameras. Also, its an 85" tv, you're not supposed to sit 2 feet away from it. The only way to tell if it looks good or not is to see it in person I'd guess.
From what I could tell in the vid, it looked gash up close, just like every other LCD and Plasma does. Every CRT I've experienced in real life though, is a different story... CRTs can be viewed from up close and still look extremely clear. That, for me... is the magic of CRT... the ultimate Crispness that is sorely missing from LCD and Plasma.
