  1. Picked up the new car on Monday. Honda ZR-V. A self-charging hybrid but it's a bit like driving a computer. Never seen such a thick manual for a car before!!

Pretty sure this is close to 700 pages. It feels like one of my old law textbooks. Not sure why they wrapped it in cellophane, though. To protect the secrets of the car until the new owner has to actually figure something out? It'll ONLY fit in the glove compartment. It won't fit anywhere else. Which is a good thing. I must have scraped enough tobacco out of the last one's glove box to make 20 cigarettes. There's now no room for the wife to mess this one up.

@x=usr(1536) I suppose you should kind of expect it in LA but not around here. I think it's still the biggest, or second biggest, known to hit the UK. We have had a few but that's the only one I've ever knowingly felt. There is a small fault line under the Menai Straits, which is the reason Anglesey's separated from the mainland. On that occasion, we were probably about 20 miles from the epicentre. Weird thing was me thinking it was a truck going past. We lived in a housing estate with fairly narrow streets. It was basically a square. No chance of a truck of any description making its way around there.

@GoldLeader They found their audience when they branched out, particularly into licensed products. Hard to imagine now that Lego were in danger of going broke before they did that. Those boxes for the collectible stuff are big. They contain several thousand pieces (the AT-AT has more than 6700, the Falcon around 7,500). Just went onto the website of the store where I can pick one up locally and a popup said that they'd sold 50 Falcons in the past 24 hours.

Looks like another chain store with a branch more local to us has them as well. And yet, they wouldn't be making them if people weren't buying them.

History has shown that it's not that easy to remove dictators. And Hamas, it seems, have done a decent enough job for the people of Gaza to not be too bothered by having them around. Kind of like how Germany saw the Nazis. They could have been the greatest Government Germany had ever known, had it not been for the megalomania, psychopathy and murder. Like Germany, the residents of the Gaza strip are now paying the price.

@dudeguy Is that what your media's been telling you? That no one else ever helps? The UK got dragged into both Afghanistan and Iraq because of the US. In this instance, it's unlikely that many outside of the immediate Hamas hierarchy knew what was going to happen until the day. Israeli intelligence has operatives and informants within the organisation but they were seemingly caught with their trousers around their ankles. There will be a war between the US and Iran at some point. Unfortunately, it looks like there needs to be. It's something that's been brewing ever since the US murdered the last democratically elected prime minister of Iran and installed a right-wing puppet dictatorship.

@Zylon Yeah, that's kind of why I bought the Vader. I wanted to have a go at repairing it and selling it. Because the box, inserts, joysticks, original Pac-Man cart and pamphlet were together and in decent enough condition I decided to swallow the "loss" and keep it, annoying the wife in the process. It was actually the first time I'd bought any retro stuff in many years.

  22. UK having to shut many schools because of weak concrete. First two schools in Wales to shut are on the island, including my daughter's old high school.

    1. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

As far as I know, no incidents as yet but the affected schools are being closed as a precaution. One of the issues with this concrete is that it's full of air and when it starts to crack or crumble, water can get in and start attacking the rebar. The island has five high schools. One is relatively modern, having been built in the 80s, so it's of brick construction. The other two schools are my old school and Llangefni, which I would have gone to if we hadn't moved in '78. Both schools are almost identical in design and are currently being examined. They were built in the 50s, which is around the time the concrete was mostly being used.

The graininess is actually down to a "cinematic" filter they have. It's deliberate. You can turn it off. I dialed the graphics all the way down. Still some freezing but it's not as bad. I'd already cut back my startup programs a couple of weeks ago.

Just spent a couple of hours on it. It's kind of like a cross between Skyrim and Mass Effect. In some respects, the combat is more enjoyable than in Skyrim and the interface seems to be slicker IMO. BUT there are some issues on my system with the audio. It also freezes for several seconds as it seems to be constantly loading content, which usually causes dialog to be mismatched with the NPC's mouth. Just checked the specs and everything apart from my CPU is at the recommended. When it doesn't freeze, it runs well with everything cranked up to Ultra, although I've noticed some graininess in the image. Possibly due to FSR.
