I'd call it "Apartheid Baby: The Real Story of One X-tra Ordinary Idiot."

A biography, yes. But an autobiography would probably be called "Rags to Riches: The Tale of a Genius", or something like that.

      Except "Genius" would be misspelled.

  2. New RX6800XT came today to replace 6 year old 4Gb RX570. Still a decent card for most games, just not really good enough for sim racing.

  3. After the two weeks I've had, I really didn't want to go in to work today. I need to do something else. Undertaker sound like a more interesting and less stressful job.

  4. Colleague at work today: "So, who's your bet for who that person in the BBC scandal is?" Me: "I don't watch much BBC and the only presenters I know are Gary Lineker and Huw Edwards. Wouldn't it be funny if it was Edwards?" I'm playing the lottery this week.

  5. OMFG! If I wasn't stoked for Ahsoka before, I sure as hell am now!!

@Random Terrain Understandable. Just hope the trailer isn't a montage of all the good bits. It's got to be better than Obi Wan, surely.

  8. Wake historian daughter up with the news that Wagner group has turned on Russia: "I am NOT learning about another f***ing Russian Revolution." She didn't like learning about the first one, I guess.

Yeah. Don't think Wagner have much hope although they seem to be halfway to Moscow. They have been under attack but have been fighting back. It really just depends on how much military personnel want to get in the way of this feud. We live in interesting times.

Problem is that there are other extremists in Russia that could take Putin's place. The BBC are portraying Prigozhin as another extremist war hawk. But their reasoning is that he's said that Ukrainians and Russians are one people. It's ignoring some of the things he's said recently where he's pushed back against the narrative from the Kremlin, saying that neither Ukraine or NATO was ever a direct threat to Russia. It could just be part of his power play to portray the minister of defence as someone who has poisoned Putin's mind with the other false narrative. Who knows?

Russia is THE land of opportunity if a hot dog salesman can rise to a position of such power.

    3. x=usr(1536)

      x=usr(1536)

Re: lands of opportunity: if Putin could go from KGB agent with the rank of lieutenant colonel to taxi driver to nominal president-for-life of a world superpower, there's definitely something to that.

Totally agreed that there are other extremists waiting to take Putin's place.  Prigozhin doesn't strike me as particularly political - at least in terms of ideology - though he wouldn't turn down the power that comes with politics.  He'll happily present whatever position will help him attain that power most easily, and if this week it's that the Kremlin is wrong, then that's this week's position.

My suspicion is that he wants to play both sides: annex the Ukraine as a permanent part of Russia, but also denounce the current regime (and its actions) in order to appear as a credible alternative that isn't looking to escalate tensions with NATO.  Personally, I'm not buying it: to my mind, he's just another Putin but from a different background.

None of this comes as any surprise.  It was par for the course with the Soviets, and also with the Tsars on occasion.  History repeating itself certainly does lead to interesting times, to be certain.

    4. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

Well, that didn't last long. Looks like he was banking on picking up support from the Russian military along the way, which didn't happen, so he folded in his game of poker. He probably thought as well that he was indispensable to Putin and was trying to pressure Putin into firing the guys running this war for him.

Yeah, these ones have made mistakes with our orders as well but never had an issue with them fixing it. For me, if they forget to put sauce in, it's no big deal - unless it's something like Mozzarella cheese bites and they've forgotten the dip. This older lady who takes the orders if funny. I could hear her bantering away with the driver behind us. "What do you mean, it's him again?" Obviously knew each other or just another customer she's developed a rapport with. 😂

What's slightly nuts is the price of RAM at the moment. Don't think I've ever seen 1 stick of 32Gb sell for under £80 before. Not much more than what I paid for the 16Gb I have in my machine now.

  16. Hi Allan. I was just browsing through the PL65 threads and noticed a post from you that I missed way back in 2014 asking for permission to put it on AtariMania. Just looked at the site and I see it's up on there but it says you're missing an original disk image? Do you mean a photo of the original disk? If so, I can have a rummage in the attic for it. Hopefully it hasn't been lost in any of our house moves. I may have posted a photo of it at some point but it's likely impossible to find on here now.

You're not alone. It is a common problem with popular IP absolutely everywhere. Like anything with Mario, Harry Potter, Pokémon, Samus (Metroid), etc... they do not need to be unique, fun, or even very well made to be intensely popular and "loved" by fans.

@jd_1138 It is if you have it seen to properly. I fell from a zip line when at Uni back in '99. Suffered a bad back for 20 years because it was never properly looked at. Could stand still for barely a few minutes before it started to get painful and seize up. Then about 3 years ago I decided to lay some paving slabs in the back garden. These were really heavy and although I could only work on them for a few minutes at a time, all the heavy lifting and bending more or less fixed my back by strengthening the damaged muscles. I still have a bad shoulder from a 2008 car accident. Been thinking of going to the gym to work on it to see if the same thing will work on that. Just trying to find the time.

One night at work I suddenly had a shooting pain in my back,  like maybe a pinched nerve or something,  and later that night,  I was running back to my truck and I didn't see a little rope attached to an inflatable Christmas decoration in the yard, and I tripped on it hard.  I slammed down on the grass,  and when I got up, all my back pain was gone!  (I must have stretched and unpinched whatever was happening there,  heh).

    4. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

@GoldLeader There ya go. Christmas miracles do happen. 😉 Reminds me in a very roundabout way of the time I was in the territorial army. During a training weekend, I was just jogging back to my billet to pick up my stuff ready to go home when I felt something pop behind my right knee. No pain. Didn't feel anything. Next day, when I got up out of bed and tried to stand, I felt it. I had clearly popped a tendon. Could barely walk for a few weeks. Didn't help that I was in college at the time and my room was ON THE TOP FLOOR! Those stairs were deadly to my legs at the best of times. There was no lift in the building. Funny thing is that something similar happened with the 2008 car accident. I felt okay immediately afterwards, although the fire service took the roof off the car because the wife was complaining of neck pain. The pain didn't hit me till the next day. I must have the slowest nerves of anyone on the planet. 😂

  20. Driving yesterday through a village on the way to pony's yard. Daughter shouts "WTF?? Did you see that? A union flag outside a house. Now we know which house to egg."

Jesus! Steady on. Think we saw two flags on the way. Let's just say that, around here, there wasn't a huge amount of interest in the Coronation.

  21. Babylon 5 animated movie on the way. 🙂

  22. Been busy turning a small shed into a mini workshop and found my Pandora battery and copy of X-Wing Alliance. God knows if they still work.

    1. jd_1138

      jd_1138

I did that a few years ago to my shed. There was some rotten wood at bottom, so I cut it out and put in new OSB. I put in 1x4 trim wood to cover the seams.  And I replaced most of the other trim. Then I painted the shed Behr brand "Barn Red" and the trim white. And on the inside, I cleaned out all the rubbish and tossed it, and I put up a lot of built in shelving to swallow up all the items that had been taking up space on the floor. Along one wall I put in a work bench and bolted a vise to it. Sheds sure hold a lot more when you put up shelving especially higher up where the space is wasted anyway.

And with nothing on the floor, I can get to everything easier.

    2. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

Yeah, I've put up some rack shelving that drills into the wall. Only a narrow one for smaller items but should be able to add another three shelves to it. The door is off-centre, so there's much less space on the left wall than there is on the right. Got the shelving with some thicker MDF to go on the right for larger items. Stuck a pegboard on the back wall with a couple of dozen plastic bins. Then I'll put a simple worktop below that. Not sure whether to build a frame for it or just use another shelving kit. I've had a welder that we bought about 3 years ago. Never used it. Have to try to replace the high voltage cable for it as the rabbits got to it.

    3. jd_1138

      jd_1138

If you are going to be doing workshop projects and welding, I'd definitely build a frame underneath to support the weight and will be pretty quick to do, and when frame is done it will be easy to measure for the work top. I installed my vise right atop the middle leg. The space underneath can be used for larger bulkier items or even install an additional shelf in the middle.

I screwed in a ledger board along the shed wall -- attached to a structural 2x4 already there, then built the frame around that. Running power out to the shed and having lighting and radio is great. I like to sit on the folding chair out there and have a pint after mowing the garden. Fun times!

  23. So, since the weekend there have been two firings and one promotion.

  24. Spoiler Alert for season 2 of Welcome to Wrexham ....

Promoted as Champions of the National League. 🙂

  25. Remember when Albert put sales to UK on hold while he got to grips with the new VAT law? Seems the law's backfired spectacularly. 😂 One poor guy got tax bills for 11,000 overseas companies. It's the latest tax fraud by companies selling on eBay and Amazon.

    2. carlsson

      carlsson

Didn't the EU implement a similar law, except they still offer the loophole of having the end customer pay import VAT if the seller is not a big business? I didn't check if having the loophole in place reduces the risk of fraud though.

    3. x=usr(1536)

      x=usr(1536)

@carlsson: that sounds about right, though IIRC it's also possible for individual countries to have their own regulations outside of the EU ones for VAT and other duties / taxes on imports.  My recollection is that it's based on sales volume, but don't quote me on that as it's been some time since I checked.

    4. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

What's happening in these cases is that HMRC are just one total fuck up of an organisation. All these companies have registered for VAT with HMRC and stolen this guy's address in Cardiff. If they do that, eBay and Amazon don't have to collect the VAT. It never raised any alarms within HMRC that all these companies were registered at the same address. So, by doing this, the companies were charging VAT and instead of paying it to HMRC, they were pocketing the extra 20%. So this poor guy got hundreds of tax demands and was threatened with court and bailiffs for non-payment. HMRC did nothing about it until the guy approached a TV programme.
