  1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but NetUSBee doesn't support mass storage devices (flash memory), only mouse & maybe keyboard.

Ah, bugger... you're probably right. I was getting my hopes up, since some of the photos of the Netusbee show it with what looks like a USB flash drive plugged in.

  2. When it comes to TOS/DOS compatibility, would this issue become less important if a new Netusbee device becomes available? From my understanding, a Netusbee would allow STs to access USB flash keys, which would give Atarians another conduit for Mac/PC <-> Atari transfer. Or am I missing something?

This is how I plan to go if Lotharek is able to bring a new Netusbee to the market ( *nudge*nudge*wink*wink* to Lotharkek :) ), although I can understand that some people won't want to invest in a Netusbee just to transfer files... but I wonder how it will all cost out? Cheaper to by HDDriver to get TOS/DOS compatibility on your UltraSatan SD cards, or buy a Netusbee and get USB drive access along with ethernet?

One thing is for sure... it's pretty good times for Atari fans right now! Lots of great new stuff coming out for this old platform! :)

  3. - second sd card ( best 128/ 64 mb) format with fat16 in PC -- with newest hddriver usatan will recognize 128mb card and swapping data with pc is awesome !

Oops, one more question... does anyone know if this will also work for a Mac / Mac OS X ? I know that the Mac OS can read/write FAT16 disks, but the Mac OS also writes various invisible Desktop database files into every volume and folder it accesses. Does this cause any problems when you're back on the ST side?

    Thanks again!

  4. Hi,

card is prepared to work with all st/ste starting from tos 1.02.

    Hi Lotharek,

A while back there was a disclaimer on your/Jookie's site that TOS 1.04 was the minimum you should have for proper UltraSatan compatibility. Have you been able to work around that with your new UltraSatan, so that it works reliably under TOS 1.02?

    Thanks!

  5. Amazed at the quality of case etc, and didnt even need to format the 2Gb SD that was preordered with mine.

Very cool! I'm very much looking forward to getting mine!

Quick question: was the SD card formatted for booting, or just formatted for ST read/write? In other words, will I be able to just plug in the SD card, connect the UltraSatan to my ST, and have it boot right away "out-of-the-box"? Or will I still have to get something like ICD to make it bootable? What was the partitioning like?

    Thanks!

  6. Sorry Mef, can't help you with the box-art, but I just had to pop in and say how much I've always loved Activision's old box-art. The way they would always work the Activision "swoosh lines" into all their game art was terrific. I always loved the simple but "exciting" artwork and colour schemes... It's too bad that so few companies put out such nice artwork as this nowadays.

Good luck with your search! (and if anyone does want to scan in vectorized versions of the other Activision artwork, feel free to post them here! ;-)

  7. Wow, only just discovered this thread... been asleep at the wheel it seems!

I would DEFINITELY buy a multi-cart solution for my Intellivision (would even go up to $100-$150 for it, depending on feature set). I just recently got a Harmony cart for my 2600, and it totally rocks. I was kicking myself at having missed out on the CC3, so if someone comes up with a Harmony-style gizmo for the Intellivision, I'm definitely in! Speaking for myself, I would be happy with a simple drag'n'drop SD flash solution for loading game ROMs (I wouldn't need a programmer's interface or anything like the Harmony has).

    Thanks muchly!

  8. I used to use First Word Plus on my Ataris. I don't know which current word processors will read a First Word Plus file, but what you can do is write a document in First Word Plus, then go under the File menu (I think) and un-check the "WP Mode" (word processor mode). Now when you save in First Word Plus, it outputs a plain ASCII text file which should be readable on any modern day text editor.

    Good luck!

  9. The awful doo-doo-doo sound in Surround. It's actually not too bad a sound on it's own, but when you play the game with your kid for over an hour, your brain will start to lock on to the beat and go into "kill me, please" mode... I remember lying in bed that night, and all I could hear in my mind was doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo....

On the other hand, love the simple start-up sounds for Defender and Missile Command.

  10. Looking at my Mega STe, I would have to agree with Official Ninja - the fan is an integral

part of the PSU and I'd be loathe to remove it as well.

Ah, I didn't realize the fan was integrated with the PSU. For some reason I thought it was separate and removable/replaceable... I really have to open up my MSTE and see what's inside! :-)

The pico PSU sounds interesting... Will have to look into it. Cheers!

  11. I have put an Ultrasatan inside my Mega STE, with the abovementioned adapter from Alan H. It works very well and I can use my Satandisk with the external connection. My only gripe is that I lost the LED activity light on the front. I've been considering switching to the Gigafile but also think it's a tad expensive.

I just checked with Lotharek, and he says that his new internal UltraSatans will allow you to hook the MegaSTE activity LED to the PCB (apparently there will be special connectors just for this). I know it doesn't help you with your UltraSatan, but I just thought I'd pass this along for those who might be interested.

  12. I thought the fan is to keep the power supply cool. I wouldn't remove it.

Intact I think the vents on the case should be larger for more flow.

Sent from my Windows Phone 8X by HTC using Board Express

I think the vent size is probably fine... I certainly used my MegaSTE for years without any issues. I'd be curious how much more juice the MegaSTE's power supply puts out in comparison to the old 1040ST's power supply. If they're the same supply, then theoretically you should be able to reduce the amount of airflow required - assuming, of course, that the hard drive is removed and replaced with an UltraSatan or Gigafile. I don't know how much the design of the 1040's case helps with heat dissipation, but if the 1040ST could work without fans, then perhaps the modded MegaSTE could as well.

I've also been considering removing the fan but another option is to put a resistance on it to make it run slower. Will try that if I can bother to remove the case top sometime.

Lotharek is also selling a MegaSTE adapter with his version of the UltraSatan. As for the LED activity light, didn't he (Lotharek) mention at one point that it would be available for the internal version (perhaps one could disconnect the LED on the PCB, and connect the cable for the Mega's activity LED instead)? Might be worth dropping Lotharek an e-mail to confirm.

  14. I can't answer your question directly, but isn't there an adjustment pot on the AV mod board that you can tweak to change the intensity and/or saturation? Maybe a tweak to the AV mod board could solve your problem (although it would then not look good on an old CRT).

For what it's worth, I also find that my 2600 6-switcher video looked a bit flat on my LG flatscreen, but I just put that down to the crappy old RF cable connection I was using. My 2600 Jr. looked somewhat better, but still a little flat (again, just with RF out).

  15. Actually, while there's been some discussion about the internal UltraSatan in the MegaSTE, I would like to ask the following:

Does anyone know if you could unplug the cooling fans in a MegaSTE once an UltraSatan is installed? My understanding is that the bulk of the heat generated inside the case was because of the hard drive, but once that is removed, could the fans be unplugged to create a totally noiseless MSTE? Or should the fans be left going to keep the power supply and motherboard cool? I seem to recall reading somewhere once that the MegaSTE without a hard drive is pretty much the same as a 1040ST - which was a fan-less computer (although the case design is different).

Just wondering if anyone has any experience/thoughts on this?

    Thanks!

  16. Personally, I do not see a need for an internal Ultrasatan. If you want to replace the internal Mega ST/STE drive, I would rather get a Suska Gigafile with internal adapter. It's expensive, but is more appropriate for the situation. You really only need one slot for an internal drive. You are going to need to cut 2 slots since they are side by side if you want access to the cards. I don't like the idea of cutting cases, but it's up to you.

Why also have a clock? The Megas already have a clock in the computer.

To me, the Ultrasatan is really made to be an external device.

Don't worry, I have no intention of cutting up my MegaSTE case. I'll just install the UltraSatan with a large flash card and be done with it.

I think having an internal option for the UltraSatan is great. It allows one to remove the old, noisy, hot and potentially unreliable platter drive and make the computer wholly solid state. I wasn't even aware the Suska drive existed until you mentioned it, and although it looks like a nice device, the UltraSatan is cheaper. I actually ordered 2 UltraSatans - an internal one for my MegaSTE and an external unit for my older 1040ST... I may not have sprung for 2 units if they would have been as expensive as the Suska was. Not putting the Suska down; as I said, it looks like a great device and the SCSI compatibility is definitely a bonus, but the UltraSatan will serve my purpose just fine.

  17. Hey all,

This probably isn't the right forum for this, but was wondering if anyone had come across one of these before:

    post-34290-0-29958300-1359406691_thumb.jpg

It's an Atari calculator - the CC190 to be precise. Doesn't seem to be anything too remarkable about it, but I found it in a box of old junk and couldn't even remember owning it before! It doesn't work right now, and the case is a little tricky to open, so I'm not sure I'll bother trying to replace the battery.

For a simple calculator, I do like the colour and styling... goes with the ST/TT angled lines (just to show that this is a vaguely on-topic post :-)

Interesting to see the other home electronic areas Atari was branching out into. Does anyone know if this is rare, or would be worth something?

    Cheers!

  18. PCB is universal, but :

    - for internal version power connector from floppy is used (5V)

    - extrnal will be in case and will need You mobile phone charger ( also 5V)

    why this solution ?

i`m unable to delivery power supplies around the world - You know - diffrenct plugs, 230 or 110 V ...etc etc. and usb charger i think everybody has home already.

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with the internals of the (in my case) MegaSTE... if you use the floppy 5V for the UltraSatan, does that mean that you can't use the floppy drive any more? Or is there some kind of internal splitter/loop-through for the floppy power cable?

    Thanks!

  19. I thought it was only an early batch of ste's that had the bad DMA chip and that STFM's weren't affected? I've searched a bit to try and find a definitive list of models affected but just keep finding threads talking about the ste dma chip?

Yes, it seems you're correct about the ST part. I just re-checked Jookie's page about the DMA problem, and it only refers to STEs. Still, I have a Mega STE which I'm hoping should be OK (I bought it after it had already been on the market for a while), but just wanted to see if anyone knew of any "quick check shortcuts" before I go through the hassle of taking the computer apart to verify what's actually in there.

    Thanks!

  20. Hello,

As many people are probably aware, there is a problem with some "bad" DMA chips in some of the earlier ST/STE/Mega-STE computers, which can cause problem when using devices like the UltraSatan.

With that in mind, I had a couple of questions:

    1) Is there a way - via software - to determine whether the DMA chip in one's Atari is a good one or a bad one? Could someone who knows programming (and the ST hardware) come up with some kind of test that lets the user know whether they have a bad chip? Or does one have no option but to physically open the Atari up and remove the floppy drive to see the chip number printed on the IC?

    2) If someone has a bad DMA chip and they want to replace it, how difficult is this to do? Is the DMA socketed, or do you have to de-solder all the pins individually?

    Thanks!

  21. Hello all,

Hope I posted this to the right place.

Is the 2600 S-video mod still available for ordering somewhere? I checked out Longhorn Engineer's website, but I couldn't be sure what the situation was (it says that the mod is "Sold Out", but also seems to indicate that kits can be bought and installed "DIY"). I don't mind doing the soldering/drilling to install a kit into my 2600, but I would prefer a fully assembled PCB kit with all the parts.

Ideally I would like 2 kits - one for a 6-switcher woodgrain, and one for a 2600 Jr.

Can anyone offer any advice on this?

    Thanks muchly!

  22. Any word on the progress of this project? Just curious how things are coming along. :)

You can find updates posted at Lotharek's website : http://lotharek.pl

He seems to be making progress getting a new prototype together. His last update stated "28.12.2012 - PCBs are here, still waitng for some minor parts. Soon prototypes and final calculations."

It sounds very exciting! I hope he's able to succeed in bringing a new UltraSatan to all Atari fans who missed out on the previous versions ! :-)
