  1. Cart slot is nice & clean, very clean carts as well. Happens randomly with several games (have tried different carts of same title with same results) such as Pole Position & Choplifter. Movinh cart and re-inserting doesnt help. Others run fine such as Centipede & Galaga. Makes me think it's how those particular titles use the chip perhaps. Seems worse with colorful games. I'm tempted to buy a refurbished, composite modded console from Best Electronics
  2. Thanks exactly what I was hunting although the technical discussion has been interesting. Looks like we had to wait a few more years before retail console software was 480i.
  3. I believe it was solder on Maria chop as mentioned above although the repair marks where intriguing. I had a buddy who wanted a 2600 & traded me for this 7800 instead I now have another 7800 that works 80% of the time or so. This one will experience color bleeding & graphical glitches out of nowhere. Only happens on 7800, not 2600. Seems some Maria chips are reaching end of life or need attention.
  4. Awesome info Gunstar! You're right, you can really get deep into this topic technically I guess my main curiosity was to know as an example only (only using these titles hypothetically): Pitfall & Zool 2 run at 224i on NTSC while... Rayman & AvP run at 480i on NTSC so on & so forth. Just thought it'd be an interesting comparison.
  5. Interesting... didn't realize the PAL sets where 5:4 versus 4:3. I never crunched the aspect ratio numbers. 1.33 vs 1.25. Makes sense on Doom if you're referring to game play window. Yeah Gunstar, I always get the terminology mixed up although I understand the tech... 480 lines >>>, 640 ^^^^ the verbiage is opposite of how it registers for me. 4/3 = 1.3333 480 x 1.3333 = 640 is how I remember it Is there any way to see, perhaps in an emulator, the true aspect ratio for each game?
  6. What screen horizontal screen resolution do Jag games run at? 480i in NTSC & 576i in PAL? Or is that max and some games were programmed to display different resolutions? I could see the 16 bit ports keeping their 224i resolution. Someone recently mentioned Doom only runs at 200x160 versus 640x480 which surprised me. Is this correct? This is listed on the specs page for the Jag on the VG Museum website: I think that last sentence is misleading considering the PAL equivalent of 480 is 576. Where all Genesis & SNES games 224i or was that the max (and standard) & some displayed less? If all this adds up, I'd be interested to see a list jag games showing what resolution they run at.
  7. I'm aware... I should've said "one primary" versus "single" The Z80 was an 8 bit CPU used primarily for SMS backwards compatibility. Programmers could of course tap into it if those chose to. The 6800 was the 16 bit processor in relation to main point. That point being, the Jag architecture was unique at the time & others consoles such as the Saturn & PS3 (much later) also had unique chip & processor setupAs to follow.
  8. Perhaps "powerhouse" was a strong word it was a very adequate machine with more horsepower than any console out, save the 3do. Keep in mind the 3DO costs twice as much at the time (launched within a month of each other IIRC). AvP also hit PC & it was a nice looking game on Windows! Absolutely Atari contributed to the misunderstanding but that marketing campaign was aimed at Sega & Nintendo's then current machines which were inferior from a specification standpoint. Again, back to my "put the console in a box" point, the Jag has a unique architecture. Previously consoles had a main CPU that had a 8, 16, or 32 bit data bus... enter the Jag with 5 co-processors with a 64 bit data bus between those pushing graphics. Back to the main thread I missed out on the Jaguar. To be honest, I heard "Atari" & thought "old arcade games." I wouldn't been blown away if I'd played one & can appreciate the console today for what it is.
  9. Sure don't mind elaborating. It seems ppl have to fit the hardware into a bubble... was it 64 bit, 32 bit, or 16 bit... point out the 16 bit/6800 ports, etc. Most can't just accept the console as a "between generations" machine. SNES hit in November 1990,Jaguar in November 1993, N64 in September 1996. Literally in the middle. Sure, I've gotten flack for that statement/mentality in the past but it's how I personally view the Jag. View the awesome sprite work (see Super Burnout & Rayman) & early 3D with no helper chips a la SNES SFX (see Iron Soldier). Cool mix of both technologis of the generations on both sides of the timeline IMO! It's an interest console with a fun library, odd history, & I think many misunderstand how it fit into the overall landscape in 1993. It was a power house at the time of release.
  10. I gave my opinion on what drew me to the console & library. You then asked "why"... so my response is "because"... I'd definitely say there's more than 5 notable games. But that's the value in opinions. To each their own.
  11. I grew up on the NES, not the 2600, which makes me a bit younger than many around AA. When the Jag released my cousin knew a guy who had one... closest I got to one until years later. I became quite fond of the console then when I discovered some great titles & realized our black cat is misunderstood.
  12. At least we didn't get the giant rats.... I actually really like the 3DO SFXs, think they sound more crisp. Refresh my memory on the other versions soundtrack, IIRC the Jag version had a jazz meets Sega Genesis soundtrack. I played the DOS game on my dad's old PC originally. One of my "defining games" & I enjoyed playing through the Jag port a few years back. Still CIB on my shelf
  13. Isn't the Jag port based on the Mac version? Hence why the rocket launcher is present. Does the Mac version have points or health like Doom? Also, there's a video on YouTube of Carmack playing Wolf 3D (PC IIRC) for the 20th anniversary & specifically praises the Jaguar port. What's weird is he mentions shoulder buttons for strafe. Guess devs had a 6 button early on & this never made it into thr final game. Carmack vote was for the Jaguar it wins
  14. Are the ports you've been pumping out all ST to Jag conversions? Is it relatively streamlined? Was a thread on here recently about Genesis games being difficult to port over. Both have a 68000 architecture, correct?

    ZOOP!

My Jag came bundled with Checkered Flag & Zoop. I beat CF & then played Zoop for a couple of weeks. There's quite a bit of Strategy to get really good. As someone said, hard to explain but very fun getting combos & switching colors. How does the Jag music compare to SS & PSX ports?
  18. First, I know there are multiple pin outs & signal types (outputting different MHz & resolutions I believe?) for VGA. What type of signal does the cat box & similar devices output, and can this signal be used on older monitors... or more modern 15 pin VGA inputs only? I'm in the US & am exploring ways to get VGA out of the Jag & the types of compatible monitors. Not really all that interested in expensive SCART to component converters before that's mentioned. I have a TV that accepts VGA & would like to know what type of older CRT VGA monitors I can use. I know simple pin adapters (15 pin to "xx" pin) doesn't necessarily mean the monitor can run the signal. Recommendations for Atari monitors that work with Jag welcome! Basically... if I'm out at flea markets, hunting old PC monitors & TVs with VGA, what will work & what are my means to do so? THANKS!!!
  19. Star Fox (64 version on 3DS cart) Adventures of Lolo (NES) Dragon Quest VII (PS2)
  20. On my cell & can't zoom in.. panther being the predecessor to the Jag, correct?
  21. While the VR is a cool concept, I think a light gun & a KB/M setup would've been much more feasible & added tools for devs to work with. Even if the VR was release, a 15% adoption rate among Jag owners is optimistic IMO.
  22. Thanks for the info on saving. So in the footage I've watched I don't recall seeing any bosses or mid-bosses, correct? Is there much enemy variation?
  23. I remember Virtua Fighter on 32x being REALLY impressive. I think much like most short lived systems, the 32x had a lot of untapped power. There's footage of Quake running it on floating around. Yeah, SS did really well in JPN. Games were still being released in 2000 IIRC. Lack of copy protection didn't kill the DC. While it likely slightly impacted software sales... I knew 1 person with a machine & CD burner in '99 that could rip & burn the GDROM format on to a CDR. The DVD format (see the unreleased DC DVD add on) & PS2 had much more to do with it. Sega was already in too deep... burning games was a paper cut when they were bleeding out money already.
