Well I didn't allow the source code to be released so that would have helped my score too. I just ran out of steam in july and I'll get back to it eventually. I'm pretty happy with where it's going.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I'll probably work on it some more in the future. Main problems I was having was performance issues when you get too many characters on the screen and trying to balance that with reasonable collision detection without too much slowdown. As i was only able to try it on a pc in an emulator the actual mechanics of the 3 button shooting might have been something that i might have noticed more on a real system. I'll reference the feedback when I look at it again. Thanks for running the contest and taking your time to give everyone some feedback.

CollectorVision Phoenix Kickstarter is now live!
digress replied to Bmack36's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
At worse I would make a mounting bracket like fitting a ssd hardrive into a slot made for something bigger. so mount the board onto a board that then mounts into the coleco traditional shell. -

I just backed the system. I want to remind everyone that you are not charged just for backing. Your card is not charged unless the funding is successful. There isn't any risk up front. I would like to purchase 3-4 boards in the future to place in colecovision shells that I have that are no longer working. Consider adding that as an option to buy the naked board. -
I was watching a sinbad movie the other week and I felt bad for the monsters too. I need to lock a door behind the dragon so you can't escape the dragon trap til you win or lose or perhaps have it chase you everywhere. Perhaps i'll put the key around the dragons neck. I also need to animate the door opening rather than just disappearing. I decided to leave the dragon monocolour because it makes it easier to work in both regular coleco vdp & f18a. It could look better but because of the size of it it might be too much too animate with the additional colours. Maybe i'll try a test to see. Expect more monsters in upcoming versions. I'm thinking of putting in an inventory screen of some sort so You can get upgraded weapons. I have arrows and exploding potion you can pick up now but I might add some armor class or D&D element to it. I will be adding a bow animation when he loads the arrow in the future and a throw animation for the potion. The main antagonist is going to be a magician. He has taken revenge on your sister for not marrying him and turned them into creatures. He will appear from time to time to try to stop you. You need a magic item he possess to return your family to human form. Your family are somewhere in this dungeon. But which monster form did they take on? Defeat the monsters, locate your family members, try to cure them or at least end their misery then follow the magician to the depths of hell to try an exact your revenge. Or probably die like 2-300 hundreds times and rage quit. And yes this will support both regular colecovision and any f18a coleco including the CollectorVision Phoenix

Yes I need to change the sound fx. Will get to that. https://youtu.be/4e34LYELCNY

Most types traditional arcade , coleco , msx etc games are being well covered and the other developers are doing a great job on them. I just want to offer something different and well I didn't see any hack & slash hell related games with blood and stuff. So there you go.. Stay tuned here later today i'll put up an example of some early f18a graphics.

I can attest to this. Having made a few homebrews I get around 40-50's done with inserts and everything and I just say f&%$ IT. tHAT'S ENOUGH. And go program a new game and never make another copy of said game.
-
I'm adding more animations to his attack style including a bow, a throw for the viles. So additioanl animation for the deaths lots more blood coming out of dragon and your character. Need to add another attack type or parry type and some possible decaptiation of th enemies. Want to make a very bloody game. Then I'll be adding some new enemies both regular and large sized And a story/goal.
-
it's the economy of scale. There isn't enough people to buy it to bring the price down. Most homebrews sell less than 100 copies. Not everyone buys every homebrew so I think maybe double that would be a safe number for sold consoles of this type approx 200 Now they probably want to sell more like 500 and hopefully they will but I would make sure i'm at least breaking even on the money invested at around 200 units sold. They are a business. They make good products and deserve to make a profit. It won't go down in value. You can always resell it for the original price and probably more. I'm hoping in addition eventually someone will offer a pcb drop in replacement so I can put it in my original colecovision case.Might even be able to do it with one of these. using a couple of db9 cables towards the original ports.

will do. I had relaxed the speed of the jump gravity so he floated more. But perhaps too much. I will put in at least one extra frame for the jump animation. 1 of many problems . I'm trying not to expand the rooms too much but rather work on the game mechanics more first in the exisiting rooms. I need the dragon to react better and add sound when hit.
-
Hi, I was working on it this week a bit . I'll post a small update clip later on maybe today. I solved a major problem I was having with the sound as I had run too low on memory and the sound was cutting out. It's always good to know that someone is interested in seeing it progress. I'll post a small update below. -changed colours -added new low attack -changed jump height -added some new rooms -fixed the sound -added throwing attack for potions & arrows -added blood Something weird happend with the dragon their at the end. his corpse came back from the dead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OtHAujniCM&feature=youtu.be

[CV Emulator]Need info and ROM for test
digress replied to alekmaul's topic in ColecoVision Programming
Are you emulatoing the GPU on the f18a too or just the functionality? There is a plane section in tank mission for instance which actually runs a small bit of code using the f18a gpu directly is why i ask. It had to do with mass shifting of tiles after the the f18a pixel scroll reached 8 shifted pixels. That would probably fail otherwise. -
That would only be relevant if you were playing hd movies or something like that. The colecovision resolution is only 256 x192 down. 480 p is more than twice that. It'll display nice square pixels.

IntyBASIC Programming Contest Rules
digress replied to nanochess's topic in IntyBASIC Programming Contest 2018
I think these contests are fun and healthy for the community. Thanks for running the contest. It actually made it more likely for me to finish the game. I may return to it and improve more later on. -
did you try turning it on without a cartridge. you should get the colecovision logo screen. enough to test so you could rule out a bad game cart. The 7800 rf cable works fine. I've switched back and forth 7800 & colecovision. It has to be going into the coax port of your tv ultimately though. Not rca video in. It's probably your power supply is no good anymore. if you have another try that.

Why I got back into collecting ColecoVision...
digress replied to TPR's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
Canadian Tire was where i went too. I got donkey kong junior there. They had a coleco setup too and I played up n down. I remember around 1985 they had a bargin bin full of clearnance colecovision games, all new in the box. I wish I had the money to buy everything in the bin. -
looks like a good game. There were several like this that i missed.
-
i bought virtually every homebrew for the past few years. That and programming my own I have barely tried some of the games. I liked the first 2 levels i played. I'll go back and finish them all sooner or later.
-
It's just an update which you can flash yourself I assume. I think we can wait til later and get the working system now and out first. The coleco portion is the only part really interesting up front to me but I eventually would like the other systems as options too. Everything takes time and to push it back another year for optional systems is not necessary as long as they can be added later.
-
I'm not sure either. Just seems more interesting to try and recreate the original experience to some degree. I get a real kick out of finding a homebrew game for sale in a videogame shop or even a boxed original just like I used to see. Like comparing an mp3 to a record with it's full sleeve art. The container was part of the expeince. The physical cartridge rather than just a menu selection. The resale values are too high. There are many I can't get either. What game is it you are trying to get?
-
I can comment on this. I found it cost prohibitive to print less than 100 boxes. And I found a nice price break if I print 150. To be clear I've not sold 100 of any title so I usually have leftovers but it would have cost the same amount to print the lower # of boxes so it makes sense to do so. As for loose cartirdges... if you were going to do that then why not just sell them as roms or play them in an emulator? It's kind of missing the whole point.

I can suggest a few that are only on colecovision that are worth checking out. Smurf - it is available on atari 2600 too but this is really the original and best version. Alcazar - is both rare and good. It is ona few other systems but I've not seen a better version Frenzy - The coleco version is better than the aracde Looping - Depends on your taste but this it agreat version but it was an arcade port SPy hunter - The coleco version is very different & yet the same as the arcade. It's a really good version There are some home brew exclusives too in recent years that are only on colecovision.
