The NEW High Score Club S2 ~ Week 32 ~ Double Points Week 2 ~ Gyruss
S.BAZ replied to Vocelli's topic in 2600 High Score Club
WOW nice one Lid !! I keep thinking I can do something like that... every time I die i'm like Chris Farley "dddtt!! so STUPID!!" I knew better! then another death follows. I need to take my own advice from Solar Fox... I'LL BE BACK 377200 in the first round I let two ships survive from each of the first two formations as they come in, then one from the next two. this seems to guarantee getting a double shot in the first round. then I try to kill everything as quickly as possible for the bonuses from then on. Similar to Galaga, which Gyruss has many similarities with. It sacrifices some bonuses but if you get a bonus in the 1st round, no double-shot. (i think) another thing which has been screwing up my concentration is trying to figure out which planet is which! I know you're coming from outside the solar system & moving toward Earth. I think it leaves out Pluto. (if so I guess this game was ahead of it's time ) But then what? does it skip Jupiter or Uranus? which one is that other one with the ring? And what about the little reddish one? does it skip Venus, then pass up Earth & go to Mars, then (oops) turn around & make it back to Earth? this would be especially funny the second time around. -
Season 7 Round 9 - Pit Stop (Grand Circuit)
S.BAZ replied to Ikrananka's topic in ColecoVision High Score Club
I got it to work, which is farther than I got last time. However, you're right it requires a lot of power. I don't know if my computer can handle it, which is wierd, I have a fairly fast computer, can run iTunes & Stella or NEStopia (or even Fusion) at the same time. It plays but goes so slow, it took about a minute to pass 4 seconds on the timer! I'm also surprised I can't play it on blueMSX. may just have to wait til next round... -

I seem to have a Coleco handicap. this time the rom is working for me, controller working fine, but I can't figure out how to make this game start. all I can do is select difficulty, then... no response from any button! Is it a button-combo to start it? --sorry for always having dumb questions -

252100 Lovin' this game, thanks Voc for choosing Gyruss I think whoever programmed it did a great job, maybe they were just pressured for time? it seems to only lack some fine-tuning elements if I'd had this game growin' up I'd have played the crap out of it Also lovin' those suggestions MrVCS, especially Kung Fu Master, Mr Do!, SW Arcade, Klax, Ikari Warriors & Double Dragon... A fellow supposed former Nintendo junkie? but they are also lesser played Arcade titles for 2600 as well. & more cheers to this HSC -- the most fun & my favorite I usually play on a 4-switch woodgrain (orange trim, Taiwan) model VCS w/ CX-40 (My roommate, a non-stop Marvel War of Heroes fanatic, got quite a kick out of watching me play Oink! this season.) when that is not possible I play using Stella (or rarely, Z26) & the keyboard, or Saitek P220 the one that screwed up my game in Lady Bug & Spiderdroid if only I had a Stelladapter... -

well I definitely had a good run this morning: 3324 and a Perfect Christmas! I'm sure I would have made it to Ranger, but was playing on a friend's computer which has a lot of useless pop-ups happening. one popped up over the screen while I was playing in Haunted Hollow! (L17) ...& I died twice. It ruined my "zone" & I lost more lives before getting back in the groove. Then I was surprised to get killed off at Twisted Toyland !! it usually is no problem for me, oh well. I noticed another petrified snowflake in Ranger practice. I think it may have been a miracle -
2nd Annual CvW competition (December)
S.BAZ replied to cparsley's topic in Intellivision High Score Club
for today, I have an improvement! (10:29pm my time, I hope that counts as the 17th!) 2747 this was a very disappointing death for me, because it happened with kind of a glitch, or "miracle." I hit a snowflake & then Snowman killed me one step after! seemed not fair... but I can't really complain because I have been saved by a miracle a few times, not dying when I got hit. but then I lost my remaining life because I got impatient & made a bad move. my last death: check out how the grey swirl from the snowflake is still there, from my 2nd to last death. it stayed petrified on the screen when the Snowman got his miracle. You can see it's still there on my Game Over pic. Level 20 Perfect ok, I don't know how (other than Youtube, which I haven't started using yet) to get the video to post here, but you can watch it (i think) on photobucket -- This is me hangin' in there on Master Setting, Candy Cove, using my game plan as I attempted to describe before: http://s783.photobucket.com/user/SBAZ1/media/CarolvsGhostMpS3-C206_zps81926fb3.mp4.html it's not pretty but I'll get the execution down better when I get to that in my "perfect" collecting! here's a better showing of running my gameplan -- I played it on "Ranger" setting. Failed in the 2nd time around but the first part is a good run to demonstrate: http://s783.photobucket.com/user/SBAZ1/media/CvGRpS3-playbookperfect1strd_zps7f60a576.mp4.html as you can see I modified the plan a bit, to include those bottom-of-the-screen bon-bons in my opening (they are hard to get at otherwise). Here's a video of me getting a perfect Candy Cove on "Ranger" setting: http://s783.photobucket.com/user/SBAZ1/media/CarolvsGhostRpS3-P_zps1c928ec3.mp4.html the first round wasn't too pretty, I blew the opening but pulled through. 2nd round the opening goes off without a hitch, but the rest gets ugly for a bit. Then I pulled through! Another Candy Cove tip which I know works. Sometimes zig-zagging can get me out of trouble with Snowman, & sometimes not. But at these two spots it always works. If Snowman is on my tail I can always shake him if I can make it to one of these spots & just run in circles 1-3 times (I actually go in the opposite direction of the arrows). If he's not quite caught up to you when you get there, give him a second to get right on your tail! -

2nd Annual CvW competition (December)
S.BAZ replied to cparsley's topic in Intellivision High Score Club
first off: the pics I promised yesterday ! & I'm going to see if I can post the video 823 wow, impressive perfect on Stage 7 Practice (novice) perfect on Stage 6 Practice (novice) Lid - The Tolkien books are all so good it's hard to say. but the Trilogy is well worth the read. It may seem to start of slowly but once you get into it it is so hard to put down & flys by. Return of the King was especially moving & exciting to me. The Hobbit is the one I read the most times (6) & seem to enjoy it more each time! The Silmarillion is just in another category altogether, I don't know what to say other than AMAZING. Tolkien never stopped working on it his whole life and never published it. It covers the entire background for the other books, from the beginning of time onward! I'm sure it is best to read after one has already read the others, because it is so fun to discover what all the poetry and songs were about. And is so packed full of information & names & rich language, you'll have to basically study the book while reading it, referring to the index constantly in order to keep up & follow everything. But I have to say without a doubt I think it is the best. I have never read a more moving book in my life. -

No improvement today 823 But I did finish getting perfects in the practice rounds at novice level. I'll be back with pics tomorrow, just wanted to keep my streak going for 12 days achievement. got a few "helper" practice perfects too. Also, I tried my candy cove strategy out on master setting & it seems to work fine for me. Maybe misrepresented how I was doing it. I'll see if I can get a video of it to post. -

The NEW High Score Club S2 ~ Week 32 ~ Double Points Week 2 ~ Gyruss
S.BAZ replied to Vocelli's topic in 2600 High Score Club
Gyruss is a hot title at HighScore.com. I played several versions for the recent contest & have been enjoying it very much. Before Saturday night I have played only 1 game of Gyruss 2600 in my life! I've mostly played it on NES. The arcade and Game Boy Advance versions kick ass! I like the music thing. Usually 2600 games don't have a music soundtrack, or it has only one voice so it is fun to hear a more complex musical score in a 2600 game. That's a big reason for why I love Mr. Do's Castle !! Admittedly though, in a shooting game the sacrifice of sound effects is probably a bigger hit to the shorts. If only Parker Bros had gotten a hold of the Pitfall II innovation for this one! but the decision I think is fairly successful in giving the game somewhat of the feel of the arcade game. more than anything I miss the little on-screen bonus point values for blasting a formation of ships. to me that makes the game feel a little bit incomplete. -

The NEW High Score Club S2 ~ Week 31~ Double Points 1 ~ Solar Fox
S.BAZ replied to Vocelli's topic in 2600 High Score Club
wow nice one Lid I thought you'd surpassed me for a second! I'm shivering in my boots over here and 200 miles away from my Atari adapter. I brought my Atari & Solar Fox with me to visit family for holidays, then had the joy of seeing the RCA-Coax missing! I tried a few times on Stella on my bro's computer but the keyboard control is rough... Like MrVCS I don't care for emulation but I'll use it if I have to to keep up. Too bad I dont have Gyruss & it is a game near the top of my wish-list as well -

S.BAZ replied to cparsley's topic in Intellivision High Score Club
rough morning. but I did have a L19 perfect I don't think I posted yet & a Levels 1-5 Perfect score I have a question: In Twisted Toyland, how do you determine the outcome of a collision with the snowball? I have some success just head-butting it, but sometimes that defeats Carol. TOMbot sometimes beats it when shooting me, other times it goes right through & whacks her out... is it random? -
The NEW High Score Club S2 ~ Week 31~ Double Points 1 ~ Solar Fox
S.BAZ replied to Vocelli's topic in 2600 High Score Club
no improvement. gets too crazy Ya that's an important point, you can't trust the edges. When they pass by, Then get the stuff at the edge while enemy is on the other side. always staying away from the edge if the sentinel is approaching the cells in the middle at the top edge: you can zoom straight to the middle two ones right at the beginning! I do that every time a rack has them. Straight to the top, left one space & down. those two middle ones at the top & bottom are the worst. I also have the problem NCG & Lid mentioned, despairing after a death. After many resets in early stages, I just have to take it and keep playing after an early death. If I can just get some distance into it & get an extra life the early death doesn't matter so much. I think all of my 1mil+ games started with a death inside the first 5 racks. It's been a theme to find a moment when I can accept it without getting pissed or reseting, and keep going. "taking it in the shorts with a smile." I also like to say something silly when I die & then keep saying it again with every death. it gets redundant & makes dying funny instead of frustrating. one of my favorites is "you idiot! (why'd you shoot me??!) "
