Season 7 ~ Week 10/11 ~ Spring Holiday Special!

Alright. Let's get started with Red Sea Crossing: 11,500. And Wabbit (5BB): 440 -
Worm War I (A/B): 130,435 Worm War I (A/A): 2,530 Nice concept for a game, and sort of fun - at least for a while. Hit detection can be a bitch, though. I really don't know if I want to go for the 300k. I think I'm fine with what I have.

@ Mr. Vocelli: My score is 36,000, not 33,000. Not that it matters much... :-).
-
Congratulations and all the best!

Dark Cavern AB: 36,000 For Bonus: Dig Dug. I'm a geologist, so every now and then I do some digging. Sometimes I'm even underground. However, I must admit that I rarely meet creatures I have to pump up till they explode. I hope this little detail doesn't disqualify my choice :-).

Got to fly over them at low altitude. Which makes it pretty hard. I tend to miss most of them, or worse, crash while trying to pick them up.

Refueling over the river section is hard... River Raid II (A): 20,250. I see what they tried to do in this game. It kind of works. I have this cart for some time now and never bothered to sink my teeth into it. Now at least I know how it's played. I'm not good at it, but that's just me :-). Thanks again, High Score Club!

@ Vocelli: My name is listed twice in the Spacechase list. Once with my actual score of 18k, and once with 4,475. That must belong to someone else.

This leads me to suspect that all the Time Race versions have never been converted from NTSC at all. NTSC games do run on PAL systems, albeit slower and with another colour scheme. It's the other way around that causes problems with vertical hold etc. It could be that they just didn't bother.

Space Chase: 18,625. I started up Space Jockey again, but after 7 or 8 k decided that I'm comfy with my 60k score and the 3 bonus points :-)
-
Really? The one that says "Video Game - Time Race" and the number "SS-001" on the label? That's the Suntek version, and it's supposed to be PAL. How did that end up across the pond?

The reason why I have soft spot for "Space Jockey": Back in the early 80s, I owned a game called "Time Race", which is a hack of Space Jockey. Completely identical gameplay, just with different sprites. It was one of those low-budget hacks that was sold by the huge german mailorder company Quelle back in the days. I never liked the game back then. BUT: See attached photo. The second cart from the left is my original cart from back when I was a kid. This cart, plus Q-Bert and Grand Prix, are all that is left from my original Atari 2600 setup. So, as crappy as this game is, I cherish that cart as the core of my current 2600 collection. Enter my own little guilty pleasure: I discovered the bottomless pit of Atari hacks/clones/variants, but want to keep it limited, so I don't swamp myself. My goal is to collect everything that has to do with Time Race. On the photo, you see part of that - On the left of course the original "Space Jockey". I think I have more in some other boxes which are currently out of reach. The sinister part is that one of those carts isn't actually Time Race, but a game called "Time Warp" - which was sold in some regions with a 1:1 copy of the "Time Race" title, manual and cover art. That's why I love collecting for the 2600. It is complete and utter anarchy. Clones and hacks, labels, cart designs, everything. There are stories to be told even in shovelware titles such as this. Nintendo with their uniform boredom can go f*** itself :-).

Glad to hear that. Biggest challenge was fiddling with my very old and clunky camera while not getting killed on screen. Hence the 1,295 points overshoot. Needed to get that sixth life back :-). Space Jockey: 61,295. Too tired to go for 80k right now, and probably short on time during the rest of the week. I must confess that - even though it's crap - I actually don't mind playing this for some time. I have a very soft spot for this game in my heart, for reasons I might be able to show you later this week. Need time to rummage round in my collection and take a photo or two...

Frostbite 1BB: 108,490.

Atari 2600 Beamrider: 25 min Commodore 64 Archon: 18 min Galencia: 50 min Mr. Robot: 6 min Played for some participation points in the 2600 HSC, got my ass handed to me by the computer in one round of Archon (I was never good at that game) and made it past the halfway boss in Galencia on easy difficulty. That translates to level 28 out of 50. Still a long way to go...
