How would you go about removing the glue?
-
I believe this is caused due to exposure to light and humidity.
Most recently, I received a lot that contained several Activision cartridges that had minimal-to-no acti-plaque spots. All of the cartridges, in general, were in excellent condition.
I inquired with the seller, who had been the sole owner, how he kept them so well-preserved. He said he did not deliberately do anything special, but after I asked several questions, I got the details on how they had been kept. The cartridges had been kept loose inside a Video Game Center storage unit (opaque plastic, with a clear-smoked top), which was enclosed inside of a wooden TV cabinet. The seller lived in Minnesota, and mentioned that there was typically very low humidity where he lived.
I have also had good luck with Activision games that were kept in the original boxes. This seems to slow the deterioration process. About half of the games I get that are in the original box have very little spotting (though about half are just as bad as your typical loose cart).
Using what I have learned, I have started storing my Activision cartridges in 4x5" plastic zip-lock bags with a packet of dessicant. I then put them into the original box (if I have it), or keep them in a Video Game Center storage unit (if I don't have the box).

Sounds like a good game, but I'm not particularly interested until it works on my Atari 2600.

If it isn't too late, I would like one, as well. CIB

is the color set correctly on your console & your TV ... I hooked my latest heavy-sixer up to my 55" rear-projection TV & split it to my old 19" & discoverd having it on a "movie or sports" setting affeted the colors greatly .... I did have to adjust the pot inside the console as well .... but first needed to get TV right (Pitfall 1 was one of the carts I used to see if colors looked right.
Yes, all other games on that TV and console look normal. It is an anomaly with that particular cartridge. (I have multiple Pitfall 2 copies, and none have ever behaved that way.)

to bad Pitfall Harries strips didn't come .... did he look more like a fugitive or a mime ?
He had thin horizontal black stripes, so you could say he was like a fugitive in that regard.
The things is, though, he had the stripes on his head, too, so maybe more like a performance artist.

I've just uploaded some videos of these cartridges in action.
Here is the malfunctioning Yar's Revenge:
And here is Pitfall 2. Harry isn't wearing stripes tonight, for some reason, but the colors are fun:

Seems strange. Since they published other titles after the two Bally games, it seems like they would have offered one of their newer titles as a substitute.
Doesn't mean it didn't happen. I would have been one angry kid if I would have gotten that letter.
Dino: Can you post a scan of the letter?

I would participate in a Kickstarter project to buy Atari's name and IP (Asteroids, Pong, Centipede, Gauntlet, etc) if there was equity with voting rights.
I would not participate if there's a backdoor of starting a new company that is not branded Atari and does not own their IP. I would want my funds returned in that scenario.

I just recently acquired this game, and I plan to invest some serious time into it. I need to earn the patch.

With my latest purchase, a Harmony cart, I might sell off my small physical cart collection (save the homebrews and those new ones) as the Harmony does it all and then some. I'm always on the look out for better joysticks and paddles.
I think this is something you may regret, later, if you do it.

I consider carts with glitches to be an asset, as long as those glitches are interesting.
I have a Pitfall 2 cart that has weird colors. The colors are completely off and Pitfall Harry has stripes. This sounds like a joke, but I am serious. I can post a photo, if anyone is interested.
I also have a Yar's Revenge cart that doesn't play, but displays the text "ITARATARI" in a small font.
That Asteroids cart sounds kinda neat to me. I will swap you a working one for it, if you want. I am willing to risk that the rocks will appear.

As much as I would like to own Atari, bankruptcy does not mean "going out-of-business".
This is usually just a way for a company to shirk their debts while they restructure.
My impression is that they are trying to become independent of Infogrames (long overdue), and will likely re-emerge as a powerful little company focused on mobile gaming (the best move for them).
Looking at what Namco and Taito are doing (using characters and images from their iconic classic games in new ways), it has seemed to me that the Atari brand and "content" associated with them could and should be used similarly.
"Casual" gaming (I hate that term) is back, and the game companies can just focus on the games instead of the hardware (given the ubiquity of smart phones and tablets).
In Japan, Taito and Sega also have big amusement centers (a.k.a. arcades). Tokyo is full of them. It would be great to see a new, independent Atari corp do something similar here. I would love to see Nolan Bushnell's ideas about bringing back arcades (uWink) done under the Atari name:

Did this game ship with the poster/stickers to record levels of achievement, like Tac Scan and Sub Scan?
The copy I have just has a booklet inside with instructions on one side and a mini-catalog of Sega games on the other. I'm left wondering if this equals a completed copy or not.
Put another way, did any other Sega titles come with the "Performance Tracking" poster/sticker combo besides Tac Scan and Sub Scan?

..when you buy games you already have, just to get a better condition copy, or a variant..?

Well, either my friend read mention of "Maddeness" somewhere, or he actually received the game and didn't know what it was.
Sounds like the former. I don't know how someone could confuse a football game with a ska band.

When I was in junior high, around '83 I think, there was a CBS Electronics promotion where you mailed in proof-of-purchase of all of the CBS games that were out at that time (Gorf and Wizard of Wor, I believe, plus maybe 1 more), and they'd send you (or allow you to buy) a mystery game. I recall a TV commercial for CBS Electronics with John Madden (who was their spokesman) mentioning this, and that the game was "Mad, like me!" or something like that.
A friend in school told me he got this game, and that it was a game about the band "Madness". He wasn't a fan of Madness, and he seemed to think it was uninteresting/lame, so in retrospect, this seemed somewhat credible.
The problem, though, is I have never heard or seen any other mention of a "Madness" game for the 2600, so I have to assume he was making this up.
Two questions:
1. Has anyone else ever heard of this game ("Madness")?
2. Assuming my friend was wrong/lying/crazy, and this promotion did not enable you to acquire a "Madness" game, does anyone know the actual game that you could acquire through this promotion?

Hi everyone.. My first post on this site...
I made the painful mistake of donating my Atari 2600 games and accessories to Goodwill when I left home around '89. I had continued to buy games from my friends during high school, after they had moved on to Nintendo, etc, so I had accumulated about 100 cartridges, including many choice games, like all of the Starpath cassettes, all of the Xonox double-enders, Subterranea, and lots of other good stuff (with boxes for most).
I'm pretty sure they left it all outside in the rain.
When I got on eBay in around 1999, I started rectifying this terrible mistake. I almost feel better about it, now.
