  1. Play pac-man collection (pacman) on colecovision, then play the nes version of pac-man.

     

    There is no question which is better. Pac-man on colecovision is code-perfect. It also does not require a super game module either.

     

    I really wish someone would make a 'code-perfect' pac-man for nes, so I could better compare. There is a lot of flicker in coleco pac-man that I don't think nes would suffer from quite so drastically.

     

     

    However, I am thinking that the colecovision isn't suited for a game like 'mike tyson's punchout' or 'super mario brothers'. Big lovely sprites. I wish I had a perfect side by side comparison of 'mega man 2' on both consoles. Those giant hopping things in mega man 2 might not be possible on coleco.

     

    I love collecting for colecovision these days, the recent games really are arcade flawless (Mario Brothers for example). I wonder if 'code perfect' arcade games are possible on nes in fact. If you have an example of a home-brew that is code-perfect for nes, PLEASE tell me.

     

     

    In the 80's, if colecovision released opcode's flawless donkey kong (unreleased), we might have an interesting discussion. Bottom line is: what system does better regardless of the era it was in? (and the games released at those times).

     

    I would rather play Dintar's 8k pac-man for Atari 2600 than Nintendo's pac-man also (nes). :P I thought I'd put that in. The sound effects are amazing in that. It is far closer to arcade than nes.


  2. Atariage should have its own 'patch department' so to speak. They can pick up where Atari left off (um, like 30 years ago)...

     

    Someone needs to be in charge of validating high scores, and reproductions of the patches needs to be done :P

     

    I think it would be neat to see in the Atariage Store. You can buy a patch, but need to somehow prove your score :) The patches would be as close to the originals as possible.

     

    If you can't prove your score, then the patch will be slightly different colored, and on the back, in tiny text, it will say YOU SUCK! (in Atari font ofc) :P It will also cost 3 times more.

    #1: Pac-Man 8k Homebrew (by Dintar816).

    It is simply amazing. (The most recent version in March 2015, where pac-man starts in a ball)

    I would also rate this as my number 1 favorite game of all time original and homebrews included.

     

    #2: Donkey Kong (DK VCS) Homebrew

    (the one where it slowly scrolls upwards). Those giant sprites are incredible.

  4. Ice Hockey is my favorite two player game. I know it is 'primitive', but if you get into the game seriously, it has a lot of skill involved. Do you go at the other player hardcore, or go for a quick bank shot? Do you risk knocking the guy out? And then of course there's no 'time limit', so it just ends at a random time, increasing the tension :)

     

    It reminds me of double dribble a bit. At first double dribble has some bad mechanics, but it is the ONLY basketball game that I know of that simulates the stress of a 'full court press', where you can have a really tough time getting the ball across halfcourt.

  6. Oh ya, my parents got rid of my first Atari 5200 without even consulting me (it was about the year 2002)...so I got it back and much more. It catapulted my interest in Atari even further. I even collected Atari 2600, and Atari 7800 at the point. So perhaps I should consider that event a 'favor'. It is sure a fun interest. I collect games each year at Midwest Gaming Classic. It is pretty much my one and only video game shopping day of the year (except for the occasional home-brew colecovision game :)

  7. Atari was my first system ever. It will always be very special.

     

    I have an AV modded system (it has composite/S-Video), and I LOVE it. I also have a multicart.

     

    Space Invaders is my very favorite port of that game, it compares to no other.

    Kangaroo has these hilariously distorted sound effects (wait till two monkeys throw apples at the same time)....some times I just stand around ducking and dodging apples for pure fun.

    Missile Command/Centipede are incredible with the trackball. Again, NO other system comes close to this.

    I have a very fun prototype of super pac-man.

    And the pac-man game is the first one I was able to get to past the 7th key (where the ghosts turn blue for the rest of the game).

     

     

    If you are a fan of Atari 5200, make sure to try out the 5200 emulator on the Playstation 2...hook it up to a CRT tv (you must), and then try Robotron.

     

    You can actually use the analog thumb pads! I can't tell you how fun it was to play like that. Left analog moves, right analog fires.

     

    So count me as an official member of the Atari 5200 Brotherhood! :P

    The sound effects, and ghost logic are insanely awesome.

     

    It was released even after the last comment on THIS thread, so it is pretty new! :)

     

     

     

     

     

    Nukey Shay's pac-man is also quite nice. Blinky gets faster towards the end of the stage and everything :)

     

    I love any and all work done by the amazing coders for this game. They are all fun to try!

  10. I'm not sure how much more tweaking can be done to it :P I'd love to see an attract screen tho (I don't think I've seen an update with that).

     

    Can the power pellets in the 8k be bigger like the 4k one? Just curious.


  11. Oh ya, I forgot to mention the AI. It is incredible! I watched as Pinky actually went in the direction pac-man was pointing (it tries to ambush basically). And blinky follows me correctly. I'm wondering now if other logic is in it also, such as ghosts not going upwards in certain corridors. This version of pac-man has my vote for the best so far on this site! :) CONGRATS!

     

    Edit: The logic with the corridors is accurate also (ghosts can't go up). The slowdown in the escape corridor works great.

     

    Blinky gets very fast at the end of the levels (awesome).


  12. I like the size of the power pellets in the 4k. Perhaps due to limitations of the hardware, you have to choose 'solid yellow' pac-man (8k), or 'bigger power pellets (4k)', because of scanlines. I'm just guessing here tho :)


  13. Incredible work. I like the 8k version the most, where pac-man lights up 'more yellow' when away from the ghosts. I like the compromise, where he only flickers around the ghosts.

     

    Did I mention incredible? I love this stuff. Release it in a cart already! hehe *throws money at screen*


  14. I once did a timing test using an nes emulator on crt television (xbox classic) vs. a real nintendo on a crt television, with the game Super Mario Brothers.

     

    I started both at the exact same time.

     

    The music and everything was perfectly synched for about...10-20 seconds. Then the emulator started running behind. By the end of the time limit, the emulator was slower by about 1 whole second (I'm just estimating here-as I can't recall exactly), but it was significant.

     

    I didn't move mario at all, he just stood in one place on both.

  16. It is always awesome to see active development in this emulator! :)

     

    If you had to guess...how many years/decades away is 'machine perfect' emulation of Atari 2600, just a random question? And is this even possible?

     

    What if a 'supercomputer' was used? :P

     

    I think pong has a machine cycle perfect emulation, correct? Takes a pretty powerful computer tho, I think.


  17. And another one...do a Super Mario speed run on an emulator + flatscreen vs. the real hardware.

     

    Emualtors don't do too bad for 'input lag' on a crt monitor/tv. It is the upconverting to the flatscreen's resolution that makes the biggest difference.

     

    Classic Xbox mame plays great on a crt for games like pac-man. On my big flatscreen, pac-man is fairly annoying to play. The turns are just not responsive enough.

    As mentioned before, Mike Tyson on NES Punchout I think is a pretty good lag test (forget about Battletoads tunnel stages.. yikes :lol:) .

     

    Easy way to check is play it on a real NES first.. go straight to Tyson, and practice dodging punches the 1st 60 seconds of the fight if you're not already good at it. THEN.. try it in an emulator and see if the experience translates. :)

     

     

    Yes, you have it exactly right. Considering this is likely in my top 10 games, it DOES make a huge difference to be able to play it correctly. Mega Man 2 also requires very quick movements at times. A few milliseconds lost because of resolution upconverting issues (input lag) means you fall off a platform while trying to jump (dr. wily's 1st stage especially).

     

    To those who are wondering what input lag is, perhaps they aren't playing the games on the real hardware. If they DID, they'd notice a pretty big difference. I suspect some people never played on the real thing, so they never know what the game is really supposed to feel like.
