Yes, you have it exactly right. Considering this is likely in my top 10 games, it DOES make a huge difference to be able to play it correctly. Mega Man 2 also requires very quick movements at times. A few milliseconds lost because of resolution upconverting issues (input lag) means you fall off a platform while trying to jump (dr. wily's 1st stage especially). To those who are wondering what input lag is, perhaps they aren't playing the games on the real hardware. If they DID, they'd notice a pretty big difference. I suspect some people never played on the real thing, so they never know what the game is really supposed to feel like.
-
Those who use flatscreens...how can you stand the input lag? Mike tyson's punchout or Super Mario Brothers need razor perfect fast timing. I guess if you don't play 'twitchy' type games, it doesn't matter tho. Play Mike tyson on a crt tv/monitor vs a flatscreen...I promise you there's quite a bit of difference. It is way easier to dodge his punches on a crt. I've beat him on a flatscreen monitor with an emulator on a pc of course, but it is quite a bit tougher than it needs to be.

I notice myself playing on the REAL hardware much longer than on emulators. Emulators for ps2, dreamcast, or even n64 feel like they are a few steps from crashing/freezing/glitching. Some of the older emulators, tho, are almost perfect. Nes, snes, genesis, atari 2600. I wish Atari 5200 got some more love tho, why can't PENGO ever work on emulators!

Wonderful, I can't wait! Thanks for the update Eduardo

Last post on this thread was July 20, 2012... I'm sad they keep releasing Atari Flashbacks, WITHOUT legacy engineering. *rocking in the corner* why do they do that? arrgh. I LOVE the Atari flashback 2...the only thing better would be a real 80's atari modded with composite. We are now on Atari flashback 5, and it is still emulator based (FB 3-5). I hope Atari flashback 15 comes with a cartridge slot. I hope Curt Vendel designs it from start to finish. As previous people have said, he IS Atari. I am sad that it seems like he was just shoved aside, and they made further flashbacks with very little input from him.

"Concerto was plodding along well until last October when I hit a snag. It was basically working but there was a mysterious bug that seemed to corrupt every ten-millionth byte fetched from RAM. I tried every angle I possibly could, soending hundreds of hours and several months to no avail so I set it aside last month in frustration. Then I discovered that there is a different brand of memory chip with the same specs and footprint (although the chip is obsolete and no longer manufactured) but I managed to find one for testing, and found everything was working 100% with the new chip." ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I'm a complete newbie here, but if you have a failure on every billionth byte or something, does this mean you could use the cart to play 3-4 games, and then it would suddenly crash or something? If this was the scenario, what's the big deal? (You'd just power down the device every so often or something) I obviously don't understand what's going on here, perhaps the billionth byte glitch thing makes the whole device fail... Can someone explain it? Like dummies books explanation hehe -Kaz

How do you guys have the resources to make a pcb? (I'm not talking about just the pre-order funds either). It just amazes me. Do you send the schematics somewhere to get it made? Incredible stuff.

Wow, thanks for the information Nox I'll fire that up really soon. -
I signed up also, this is gonna be so fun! Can't wait for all the new releases!

I wouldn't mind if Donkey Kong was static on one of the levels, if it makes programming way easier. The rest of the game would be so wonderful, I would not even notice. I've been watching this thread quite closely! The work you guys do is so awesome!

Do you by chance have a youtube link of this event? I'd love to see it! oh wait...

Eventually, one of these 'worst' lists will have pitfall/pitfall 2 on them. At that point, I shall say: "stop disliking what I like!" But in my picture-I'll be playing "Go" instead of "Chess". ATARI!

bump! I love Donkey Kong!

I saw the NIB vectrex also. I definitely didn't have $700 to drop on it tho

The layout of the convention was very nice. Although the tent setup was less than optimal for the vendors themselves (standing water etc), it was absolutely AWESOME for consumers. People could wander around without standing right on top of each other. Even during the busiest parts of the day-shopping in the tent appeared to be very smooth. In other conventions you literally couldn't MOVE without having to wade through a sea of people to get to vendor tables. Because of the setup-I spent more at the convention than any other year. I'm sure that helps the health of the convention to have consumers/gamers be relaxed/not stressed out.

Which port would you like to see next for the SGM
kaz321123 replied to opcode's topic in Opcode Games
I would personally love to see either: Karate Champ or Kung Fu Master. I played Karate Champ TO DEATH in the arcade back in the day (I could go all the way through all the 'dans' and back to the first stage a second time). I still can't wait to get my hands on Donkey Kong when it is released. To say I'm excited about it-is an understatement! -Alpha -
I really liked viewing your pics-thanks for sharing I have quite a few videos/pics from the convention also.

@bikeguy, I love to buy all complete in box items including intellivision. I'm sure you'd get plenty of people wanting to buy your stuff (if they are like me ofc) I spent alot of my money already, but when I get some more (next month or whatever) I'd like to pick up some of your common intellivision games if possible. -Alpha

Ya know, fire fighter's box is really cool. If I saw that cart back in the day-I would've gone bonkers to get it. When I was really young-I absolutely LOVED watching fire trucks coming out from the fire house (I don't care if that sounds silly or not-but I thought it was the coolest thing to happen in the universe). I think the packaging itself would have made the game fly off the shelves (but of course I just assume other people will have the same interests/loves as me). Seeing the firetruck on the screen and being even slightly associated with the action (even if it sucked), would have also been fun for me. Games of this era are often about imagination as much as the actual gameplay. The art and commercials were often FAR FAR better than what you saw on the screen. It is one of the endearing qualities of these games. -Alpha p.s. I guess I should get some sleep for the convention this morning. Signing off

I'm typing this at 3:13am, I just collected a ton of stuff from the Midwest Gaming Classic. I managed to buy from vendors on friday night before the crowds...and I managed to haul in a ton of stuff. I don't know if this is impressive or not, but I'm thrilled I got a cart of Chase the Chuckwagon for atari 2600, as well as some others I had literally never heard of. Ok, well onto the topic at hand... I think Stan's ultimate goal has been achieved with this thread. I'll bet he secretly LOVES starship, and masterminded this whole scenario. How many people on this thread have recently fired up this game? I have no idea about the game, but I'm even tempted to try it out (tho I'm sure I've played it at one point). The best way to get games played is to make a top 10 worst game list! And watch as all the collectors try to get these games (like me) hehe. My wife thought the game 'I want my mommy' sounded cute-so I ordered it on ebay. How gangsta is that? Ya-yer jealous now Please keep on doing game reviews, Stan, I laughed out loud several times reading what you wrote-you are quite entertaining in your writing style. I envision a young kid bringing their new cart 'i want my mommy' to school the next day-and then witnessing the ensuing chaos -Alpha

I'll be there this year. Last year I got to play the Retron 5 people in street fighter (taught one of the guy's how to do the 'shortcut' zangief spinning pile driver), where you don't have to go all the way around in a circle

B-Flat Minor that is all I wanted to say.

This game actually FEELS like donkey kong-I don't care if the platforms aren't inclined. Perhaps that isn't even possible with everything else this game does awesomely. The jumping does remind me of atari 8-bit-but that's ok with me I can't say enough good things about this donkey kong version! It is just plain fun. I played it just today-and went all the way to the part where donkey kong falls. That quality is incredible! -Kaz
