Perhaps the topic keeps being reborn because the answer is never fully realized. There's too much bitching and fighting and programmer dick-waving getting in the way of a definitive conclusion. To me the question really is this; given the proper resources of time and money, what is the most complex/advanced 3d game that could be realized on the Jaguar/CD? Unless that mythical game already exists (Battlesphere), the best way to discuss the topic IMHO, is to point to similar tech on 3do and PS1/Saturn. Tomb Raider was argued about alot, and I think the consensus is that no chance on the Jaguar. So, is there say, a PlayStation game that is the closest approximation of a theoretical 'ultimate' Jaguar game?

Donkey Kong 1994 (Gameboy). I have been working on this one a long time. Although, not since 1994. I can't remember when I first picked this game up, but it was in a used game store. It's probably been atleast 15 years. It was done on the Super Gameboy. I had just soldered in a brand new battery on it a few weeks ago, and decided to finally go for it. The hardest stages overall are the ones where you have to make your own platforms and ladders. Also, I think it's stage 8-12, this lava stage, I lost around 30 lives on that one. World 9, the Tower, was actually easy, but the final battle with DK was irritating. But I did it, with no help, so I feel good about it.

What NES Game(In your opinion) Has the Best Theme Song?
Cobra Kai replied to bluejay's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I don't want to derail this thread, but I was wondering about Silius. Is it really more well known now? I bought it new when it was released, and like you said, it was not popular, but I loved that game. I always assumed it was still an under-the-radar hidden gem of the NES. On topic, I have to give it to the entire Castlevania trilogy. By the 3rd game, it was almost like Konami was just showing off with the tunes. -
Donkey Kong Pie Factory on DK Classics for NES
Cobra Kai replied to CaptainBreakout's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The NES DK games are pretty good, but you have to give props to the excellent 7800 ports. Heck, the 7800XM version is better than the NES game now. Pie factory and arcade difficulty, much much better. -
I bought Taito Legends 2 so I could play Gun Frontier and Metal Black. Those are some pricey games on Saturn, so this'll have to do.

Yeah Escape is a great little game.

I never even heard of Sega Age. I did visit Nintendo Age a couple of times before it was ruined, but wasn't impressed. Did those two sites name themselves based off the success of the Atari Age website?

Yes! I finally beat Gameboy Donkey Kong! No cheats, and no looking up on youtube. Finally!

You're right, the remark I made early this morning was out of line, and for that I apologize. I woke up cranky but that's no excuse. I pop off like that sometimes.
-
Look, I think I remember now you having helped breath new life into this project, and for that you have my gratitude. I also think that a thread titled XM has shipped!!, is not the place to bring up more revision suggestions.
-
You didn't need to make that proposal because that naturally would have occurred anyway, because that's what beta testers do. If beta testers get a fully functional unit, there's no need for further tweaks, no matter how much sense it makes. That has been the same excuse given for 10 years, "we're just making it better you idiots!" . Well enough already, what I want is already in there. I didn't help produce crap for this thing other than money if you want to know, but that's money unused elsewhere all this time, are you going to pay me a dividend for another delay? If I sound irrational, thats nothing new, I'm often that way.

I've seen so many people recommend new features for this thing over the years, most of which don't have pre-order money in, so they essentially have nothing to lose. If I didn't want to get banned from the thread I would really let you have it. I think you should just be quiet.

Aargh! I made it to the final battle with Kong on Gameboy Donkey Kong 1994, and couldn't win! How unfulfilling! I've never finished this game.

I understand and appreciate the work ahead of you. I'm not trying to sound like a simplistic fool here, but I hope you will be contacting us through our emails, because I'm pretty sure my forum name is different even from when I updated my info with your form about a year ago.
-
Great news that some finished units are shipped! Thank you for allowing us to fill out that form to update our addresses. My only issue with that was there was never any confirmation that the proof we provided with the form was 'acknowledged'. Would have been nice to get an email confirmation acknowledging that our information was updated. Now I'm kind of anxious of my pre-order honestly.

Yeah, I just want to clarify that I think generally the graphics have aged terribly, but some of the gameplay still holds up. I hate Tomb Raider graphically, but it's still a solid game. That first round of PS1 games look terrible though, Twisted Metal, Warhawk etc... Those are so ugly I think it detracts from the gameplay. I feel differently about FPS though, I think Wolf 3D and Doom actually look nice still today, but those have some sprites and not full 3D. Sometimes graphics can hinder gameplay, like if you can't distinguish interactive objects from non-interactive objects. For instance if you can't find a switch on a wall because the textures are so bad they camouflage the object. There's also the issue of the 3d camera. That took quite a while to flesh out, probably into the PS3/360 generation before it was bitched about less. Heck, I just played Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 a few weeks ago for the first time, and that game has a terrible 3D camera I think, and that is a celebrated title. Just gives me more and more appreciation for beautiful 2D graphics, another reason 2D doesn't age.

Lol. There is no 'issue' here. This has to be a gag or the biggest overreaction of all time.

You think the Orphans ain't down? They got a heavy rep!

Could Sega Save The Saturn?
Cobra Kai replied to Magmavision2000's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I sold my original Jaguar to buy a Playstation. What I thought about the Saturn at the time was that it was expensive, and that my opinion of Sega as a whole was that I really soured on them from the 32X. I didn't buy the 32X but I thought the entire contraption of Sega Genesis/CD/32X was the most ridiculous video game console I'd ever seen, and Sega made such a cluster f*** out of it, that there was no way I was investing in the Saturn, especially when I could only afford one of the systems available. -
Fact: Tomb Raider looks like shit. 2D has faced the hurdle that it is old tech and therefore not as good as 3D. This has born out to not be true as we all know, and hence the crazy amount of 2D revival indy games available that people buy. Nobody is clamoring for 1st generation 3D to make a comeback.

Could Sega Save The Saturn?
Cobra Kai replied to Magmavision2000's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Ah, what a trip down memory lane. Just reading the replies is raw nostalgia. I don't really remember all the circumstances about Sega during the Saturn launch, so it's fun to freshen up on it. -
Sounds great man! You can wire a player 2 Start using the same controller pcb? I was just concerned if you would need a second pcb to do it. You're stuff looks fantastic by the way. It's an exciting prospect to have an opportunity out there to get a good quality stick for the Jaguar. I tried to get MAS to make me one but they just wouldn't do it.
-
It seems you have your answers! You can trust grips. Regarding the dedicated thing, I just meant the second stick obviously. But, if you can make the second stick have varying functionality, that would be something indeed. One thing to keep in mind with Llamatron is you need to press player-2 start to enable twin stick mode. That means the user would need to do a hot swap of his controller after hitting start OR an additional Player -2 start button installed on your design. I will still test Total Carnage later just to verify.
