Why was the IBM PC so successful?
Osgeld replied to toptenmaterial's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
I never found that "it just works", and my first job at age 15 was as a pc tech in the "386 is still a pretty darn powerful machine" days BUT, you could buy random crap and eventually make it work by plugging it in, or fussing with it for hours on end, other companies had a lot more limited selection but it was going to work out of the box at a premium cost... cheap, powerful, easy pick 2 for example, after the PC "won" ...I remember back when looking at radio shack papers selling 386 SVGA systems on credit for less than 100 bucks a month, then turning around and looking at a macworld where they were hocking 8 bit greyscale graphics cards for nearly 800$, almost the price of a tandy box (no monitor) -
Airbuster, not the most technically impressive thing ever on the SG, but a heck of a game that keeps real tight with its arcade parent course I am a thunder force junkie edit: maybe a lot less traditional for a SHMUP, target earth.. its really more like super contra as its a side scroller mainly stuck to the ground, but if your a fan of shoot em up its a good assult of constant bullets and oh crap, 3 lives doesnt help either

I know on my electronics machine win 7 is snappier and more responsive than XP (notice I did not say faster) course it consumes 4x the resources doing so just for the record the machine is a athalon II x2 2.5Ghz 4gig ddr2 800mhz ram, IDE disk drive and onboard nvidia 7 series video (which sucks, but I dont need my 9600GT to look at a pdf)

I think they go much easier post 486, less exciting as well, but by then everything was standard, cpu, bus, video, hard drives ... anyone can go out, buy random parts from a store and have it work, no so much in the 386 days when you might have bought a hard drive and needed a new controller card cause it was IDE or RLL and you got a SCSI drive or you bought a new video card to find out it was not compatible with your practically brand new EGA screen -

NES Advantage

I know, but I spent a whole 10$ to retrobrite an entire computer case, keys and all the do-dads, and it went from really honestly MUSTARD yellow to about the color of a 5-6 year old apple, over 4 years, its fine thats 10$ for like 8 gallons of the crap and a candy bar, no splotches and just some patience, THATS the point this to brand new, and back to this Aint bad for crap bought at the dollar tree, and no protective coating sitting out in daylight for 4 almost 5 years -
though I own a Wii, I am surrounded by every place that has ever sold video games and cant give them away for 9.99 brand new in box, why would I buy scratched used games for 12.50 a pop + postage?

that 64 is the first time I have seen one in over a decade, but its just not worth it, I would spend more collecting crap just to find out if it works... then spend time and more money if it doesnt In this case its an old boat

since this thread popped up to the surface, with regards to retrobrite many of the horror stories I have seen is due to the stupid strong mixes and pastes on their site, I have done a moderate number of items using nothing more than direct out of the bottle "drugstore" h2o2 from dollar tree and some generic oxy clean (adding until it stopped disolving). From sun up to sun down it totally restored my mustard yellow IIc, reminder, you gotta watch those hot days so it wont warp the plastic from heat course a few years later its settled into a light tan but whatever, its not mustard yellow -
place down the street that never sells anything (why its gone out of biz like 3 times in the last couple years with new owners) has a C64 no cables, power supplies instructions, box is water damaged, letters on the keyboard are almost worn complete off, and the case is turd brown 50 bucks LOL

Who is looking to acquire an ADAM Computer package?
Osgeld replied to NIAD's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
it really should be no challenge to take a power supply from digikey or mouser that provides the correct voltages and current, add a cable, slap it in a box, and add a power switch for less than 75 bucks .. for instance http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/LPT24/454-1079-ND/521198 -
Tano Dragon 64 games question...
Osgeld replied to ataridave's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
have you tried just emailing the company that's selling them [email protected] -
I am 100% sure the check engine light that is on in my car is not causing problems, but without actually troubleshooting it I will not know, it just acts grumpy so you have a boost circuit that is more than likley self regulating now going to dead air, first thing I would try is to measure the output voltage of that circuit

Atari XEGS: Console or Computer?
Osgeld replied to BassGuitari's topic in Classic Console Discussion
tape drive in 87, how cute I actually would not mind having one of these machines, IMO is a sexy design minus that cart slot in the worst place imaginable I think the whole problem with the machine was no one knew what it was, it just appeared one day between the nintendo's and sega's and the commies at toys R us not quite a computer, not quite a console, doing neither particularly well, in competition with its better bretheren under the same banner, while boasting the same old same old game experience post the Nintendo revolution. Its just kind of there, between toy computer and video game machine, with not much more going for it than its well designed and attractive box -
looks good, but the splotychyness on the side is why I avoid the high powered stuff ... dollar store mixes and plenty of patience is worth it
