TI-99 4/A full set-up with 300 baud modem
Osgeld replied to lushgirl_80's topic in TI-99/4A Computers
back in the days I used to patch modems together and run around telling one to start handshaking then run across the house telling the other to start listening, so its possible to make a network just using a modem, its just not that elegant I have dead 4 wire phone lines now, meaning they are not connected to the phone network and am considering using them to bounce low speed RS232 serial around meaning I would not have to deal with the whole modem aspect, but its just a thought -
got mine in today (we live in the same state) and I dont think anyone will be disapointed, suprised and confused maybe, but I got some interesting things that I will make use of! Thanks AX

Why was the IBM PC so successful?

and like beta many machines were a closed proprietary machine that was difficult to develop for -
you listed systems a whole leap above the cv in terms of video hardware ie why cant a NES do mode 7 like a SNES??

you the same MarkO on the comp.sys.apple II group? just pm me your zip code and a email address (its such a pain getting email addresses off of google groups) desiv, its not really that hard, there is nothing super fine pitched, just a little fiddly getting the parts lined up and soldered down on two corners, everything can be drag soldered very easily, I have made 2 of these things so far (1 on home made laser etched board) and swapped every chip out on this one using nothing more than a soldering iron, but if you dont have a programer, or an arduino to act as one (as I used) then you will end up with a board that does nothing
-
I will have new boards soon enough so no worries, just trying to recoup some cost on a "OMG YOU DUMBASS" moment
-
eh I am only a month and 30$ out, its not like I just took a kick in the balls ... stuff like this happens all the time ( I work in electronics development, least I didnt order 1000 of them) which part kicks you out, the smd part or the programmer part?
-
I assembled one to continue software development, and after a week of debugging I have the stupid serial connector wired up backwards I got to spin off new boards, that will take about 3 weeks to receive meantime I am going to patch the one I have made up and make sure everything else works fine (all indications point to yes) and if so I will be open to offering the screwed up blank pcb's at cost if your willing to gather the components, solder it up, and patch the serial connection via wire. US residents only, blank board, no components, BOM, schematic, and current software which only supports Virtual Serial Drive from ADT functionality via download. you will need to be able to solder SMD parts, and have an avrisp programmer to load firmware please respond if interested.

it also is repersentitive of the 3 products you got within 123, spreadsheet, charting, and database all integrated into a single package (remember sharing data between programs was very iffy back then) and yea it was leading edge, they copied everything, ultimately killed them as they had a direct copy of the pc rom bios in their machines -
my only wish is that it could autostart a rom since I tried jstella last, it barfed quite quickly on java 1.7 yea 1.6 is better, but the world will march on via auto update

people by then had invested a bucket ton of money in those serious applications, its hard to say "buy wordstar" and the very next year "buy wordstar again cause we totally changed architectures, but now have more games" 300+ $ a pop and here these yahoos are breaking compatibility every 4-5 years it may be stupid to not get the cutting edge when your computer is just for entertainment, its not stupid to anchor down to a solid foundation when your making an investment ... in our production area its not impossible to find xt's replaced with 386's replaced with pentium 3's doing real work 24/7 running nearly 30 year old software cause the machine's they are hooked to (like a though hole pick n place machine) work perfectly ... commadore, amiga, even mac to a lesser degree cant even claim compatibility between series, nevermind none were around long enough to settle down. its kind of like that story on slashdot a week or so back, a IBM industrial control machine (not even a computer) made in the 40's still running a plant to this day, if that was replaced by an atari in the early 80's it would have been replaced a few times by now to a x86 machine, but no, they made the investment in IBM and its still running over 65 years later, no major issues, cant really make that argument for a company who sold machines at toys r us -
What is the best second Generation console?

Ditto, I have not played an intellevision but from what I see its not much a step up from the 2600, both splat big chunky pixels up and basic sounds, CV on the other hand was running a slimmed down version of the real arcade hardware in many cases I will admit the controls on the ole vcs seem just a tad more responsive vs the CV, maybe design, maybe from the CV having to work harder to produce what it did -
Good place to buy potentiometers at?

my co-workers teas me "that I must own stock in radio shack", and I buy a lot o stuff from there, but 9 out of 10 times they wont have what I want unless its simple and their prices are pretty bad, so I end up ordering from digikey or mouser most of the time (unless its 3:30 on a sunday afternoon and I just HAVE to have something radio shack does carry) on that note though prototype supplies are actually cheaper at radio shack (though not ebay if you wanna wait weeks for mail), like perfboard, digikey wants to kill you on prices -

my only memory of the atari 2600 (which constitutes the atari 8 bit option if you wanna get into it) was how disgusted I was in how poor it was (keeping in mind I was so young I only have a scarce memory of it), the only other versions I have played was arcade, apple II and coleco so for home ports I would say coleco, apple II, then atari 2600 honestly thanks to the CV port and arcade,... I hate DK rather play CDi zelda -
its ok, its a decent space shooter, but I never felt it was nothing more than the 100 other 3d space shooters at the time between the consoles and PC

shouldn't NES resellers put new 72 pins in?
Osgeld replied to toptenmaterial's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
its a very hard to measure amount that is not evenly dispersed against the contacts, I think you have a plecbo effect, and the multiple insersions to scrape and crack the oxidation off the cart has more to do with it cause you dont just blow on a cart, you insert it, see its not working, blow some more, pop it back in, still funky, blow on it, pop it back in and bam , contra! nevermind the pathetic amount of PSI you apply to metal it has to be blowing in to them, not the scraping of metal on metal to remove atomically bonded crap from the leads I work alot with card edge industrial control, same contacts as a game system, you can nail the contacts with 90 PSI if some funky old machine doesnt wanna work you gotta pop it in and out a few times, maybe with a wiggle and it will run PS coming soon, erasers, vs a calibrated ESD meter -

Retroware TV's Video Game Years series is AWESOME!
Osgeld replied to ComputerSpaceFan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I dunno, I started to watch it when it first started, its the usual talent making random comments about stuff, nothing relevant though. I would like it more if they spent more time on history and impact, rather than having local (to the website) talent making random, mostly uninformed, and sometimes ignorant comments. for example "everything had woodgrain in the 70's durh hur hur" ... well we may not feel that a woodgrain laminate with sharp edges and chrome accents is a style fashion now, but the designers of the late 70's did not like the round bulbus style of the 40's and 50's which is quite in style now (everything is rounded, and fat just like the jet age, paint it silver and black and bam) I found little value in the show, as I am an self professed computer and electronics historian, its just random people saying random stuff about things they did not experiance in the proper time while doing absolutely no thought or research on the subject. when the hit the NES / SNES age though the show will undoubtedly get overly fanboi political as the core audience is nintendo oriented, to the point I was outcast for having a reasonable argument against a few points in design theory ... though you wont see that now as their site crashed and they started fresh again (for the 4th time within 3 years, how damn hard is it to download a gz web host backup ... click dammit!) -
How come there hasn't been any new Apple II games in like 10+ years?

apple II's produce a quite not right signal that most monitors will deal with, if they are old
