In a way in speaking in terms of looking at the Atari Jaguar in a different way from a developers stand point. If I ever get around to making Jaguar game, and I will eventually, I want to make arcade games for the Atari Jaguar in the spirit what makes for a really great arcade game. I suppose it's more of an attitude then it is a specific arcade game I'm referencing and that is to make the kind of games one would like to see in an actual arcade for the Atari Jaguar in the spirit of the arcade. I think it's a neat way to get people interested in making games for the Atari Jaguar. The Jaggy has some short commings, but it also has some benifits from a programmers stand-point in the since that older arcade machines like the "Atari System 1 & 2" (which is my personal favorite) that did become successful didn't have the power that the Jaguar have. So if you had a chance to make your very own arcade game for the Jaguar 64, what would it be? That's the attitude I'm talking about. It's all about getting into the spirit... of game making that is. I think the Jaggy deserves it.

Well... I like to think of the Jaguar more as an Arcade system more then a home console. I remember my first impressions of the Jaguar as being the next arcade console; at that time it was hard to think of Atari with thinking about all of the arcade games they made... I think if game makers approach the Jaguar and think of the Jaggy as an arcade system at home, it might bring the Jag-64 to a new light or a new way of looking at the Jaguar system. A lot of people download emulators and ROMs to sometimes get or re-live that arcade experience... Well the Jaguar is well more powerful then the Atari's most popular arcade hardwares like the Atari System 1 & 2; certainly more powerful then the Neo Geo MVS. What if there was an incentive or a competition for the one who can build the best arcade game for the Jaguar? What better way to bring the arcade experience home then arcade sticks for the Jaguar... It's a good way to keep people pumped about making Atari Jaguar games. Atari Arcades Inspirations http://www.system16.com/

There use to be a website that had instructions on how to build a Joystick for the Jaguar. I got a hardcopy of it somewhere, however the last time checked, that web site doesn't exist anymore. You know what would be a neat project? If we made Jag games just to accomidate the use of a Joystick for the Jaggy. It could be something to get people stired up about making Jaguar games. The only thing is, who would actually make Jaguar joysticks? Anyways... It'd still be a neat little project.

How long has your Jaguar passion run? How far has it to go?
philipj replied to justclaws's topic in Atari Jaguar
Maybe that's the whole mystique about the Jaguar and that's the human will to conquer and overcome the challenge kind of like how people do in extream sports. Who in they right mind would want to bongy-jump off of a cliff or ride a mountain bike off deadman's incline; yet people do it anyway and it get's glamorized on TV. That's the way I like to think of myself when I'm brainstorming ideas for the Jaguar. Look out Tony Hawk, there's a new Jaguar programmer in town. -

I think that the more games released for the Jag, the more likely people will have a reasons to be motivated if they see that the system is getting a lot of support. One of the things about the Jaguar community that I think is needed is a boost in moral. I think I've come up with a millions reasons why I should program the Jaggy just to keep myself pumped up about programming the system and each time I write those reasons down just so I don't forget why I want to make games... It helps me to remember why I started in the first place. -
That was the first game I ever brought for the Atari Jaguar. The game just doesn't match the awsome graphics. Here's a good question... If you had the chance to do Crecent Galaxy all over again, how would you make the game better? To me the game has a kind-of Starfox quality when I think of remaking that game.

Writing ideas down really is the best to come up with new concepts. I have so many ideas the only problem I have is getting them all organized. Whenever I come up with an idea I always try and think of ways in how I'll use it in a game concept. I really like the Joust concept for the Jaguar; I thinking about that game last night after I'd saw this post and I think it's an excellent concept. Just the whole idea of a Joust game for the Jaguar to me switched on a lot of lightbulbs in my head where as I was thinking of ways of how a Joust game would look on the Jaggy. I'm kind of inspired by that concept.
-
I agree... "Joust", to me was one of those classics that has all of the whistle and bells of good arcade game. That game sometimes reminds me of TRON because of the sound effects... I guest that's because I remember playing a Joust arcade game that use to sit in between a TRON game and a Dragon's Lair game back in the days when there use to be arcade machines in grocery stores. I think I'm having a flashback. I think I want to make a Joust game now.

I think the game would've looked excellent if there was picture of a futuristic city or a some futuristic battle going on in the background.

I never thought I'd see a homebrew for the "FM Town Marty". That's a hard system to come buy these days. I remember reading about them back in the day but I never actually seen one. That's great.

Luckily my game won't require major horse-power, so the 68000 should work fine. If I was doing textured 3D graphics, etc. The GPU would almost be required, I think. It's also convenient, since 3 other systems I'm working on are 68000 based. Learning the GPU, and it's issues, would eat up quite a bit of time. 845696[/snapback] What kind of game you're working on? I've been planning on making a simple Street Fighter 2 style game.

How long has your Jaguar passion run? How far has it to go?

Ever since I ran into that "Barry Bankhead" website back when he was supposedly making games for the Lynx system, I accidently ran into that "Native" screenshot site at "JI2" just when I was looking up more info on the Atari Lynx. I've been wanting to make games for the Atari jaguar system ever since thus I've prepared a lot of composed music and art works in preparation. I really didn't get the system until around 2000 or 2001, but I've been keeping an eye on the Jag community a long time before then. To me it's mostly what the Jaguar represents future tense as far as development goes that's kept glued to the Jaguar more then anything else. -
The screenshot looks just like the arcade. I can't wait to give it go.

Atari Announces Flashback 2.0

That box design looks great. It's very old school. -
I downloaded the 7800/2600 OS, however it wouldn't work on a Krocodile Cartridge. Since the source code for the OS is available there's definetly room for improvement for future game developmwnts.
-
The second CC2 run is already sold out! Wow! I think the DIY version you are think of is Eckhard's 7800 dev system. Graham Percy also has an newer version of the RAM cart plans on his site. Mitch Has anybody ever used Eckhard's utilities using the CC2 or the Krocodile Cart?
-
I missed out on the second run of Cuttle Carts 2, however there seem to be other avenues to developing for the 7800. I seriously thinking about using the 7800 OS that can be downloaded from www.atari7800.com . I'm considering designing my own cartridge from the ground up because those CC2 are too expensive for me. So I brought myself books on basic electronics and power supply so that I can begin the process. There's a website some where out there where they show you how to burn the 7800 OS into the 7800 bios chip where you can extract games/ROMs from your cartridge directly from 7800 via a PC connected to the second 7800 joystick port. I still have a ways to go, but at least this way I'll have the opportunity to get to know the 7800 better this way even though I don't yet have a clue as to how i'm going to get all of this done. To be honest, the reason why I'm doing it is becuase I have a lot of ideas that I would very much like to try out and I sometimes get the feeling that I'm not the only one.

If you right-click on the file VCSBASE.MDB and then change then uncheck the "Read-only" checkbox, does it work then? ..Al I right-clicked, selected properties and checked the read-only box and left the box empty then clicked "Apply." I couldn't get Krocodile commander to work. I have Access 97, but I was unable to open it the database file that came with the Krocodile Commander CD or the file at the Internet download site.
-
I can't get Krocodile Commander to work in Windows 98. I coppied it to my hard drive and the error message still pops up.
-
I just got mine today and that error message popped up when I tried... I'm going to copy that file to my hard drive to see if it'll work.

I'm trying my luck out with BJL... I've been having a time trying to get the address to my printer. Over at "Jaysmith2000" I started a thread over there in the homebrew section on "Everything BJL" to try and get as much BJL info as one can get. The Ehternet card looks to be a much faster and easier solution kind of like the Krocodile cart or the Cuttle Cart; just plug-n-play. http://jaysmith2000.ipbhost.com

I hope they release a version of this cartridge soon... I think the time is ripe for a new way of programming the Jaguar with the release of the Krocodile Kart and all. I have a feeling that 2600 development will sky rocket when the Krocodile cart is finally released. It would certainly be the ideal time to release something new for the Jaguar while game development is still fresh; we may as well strike the iron while it's hot.
-
I'd often thought about making a custom card for the 7800 because I got two 7800 systems; one to play on and another to develope on in the event something was to happen either one. If there was a way for someone with a "Cuttle Cart 2" to use their cart to help them accuratly emulate the 7800 that would be a real big plus. I believe over time something will come about for the 7800 if developments like the 3D engine continues. I'm still waiting on my "Krocodile Cart" so that I can learn how program the "TIA" because if I get a Cuttle Cart now, the first I know what I'm going to do is to jump right on the "Maria GPU" and from what I understand the 7800 is a lot harder to program then the 2600. If I can just get a handle on the "TIA" the "Maria" might not be so hard to program.
-
I played "Ballblazer" for the 7800 yesterday and just looking at that game I think 3D is very much possible for the 7800. That system handles Ballblazer like it aint nothing, yet some of these guys here make 3D engines for the 2600. It'll be very interesting to find out.
-
One thing I'm sure most would agree is that the 7800 is somewhat uncharted territory I'm just glad where discussion is leading to because we'll never know exactly what the 7800 is capable of doing unless we put the 7800 to the test. I would like to see some more homebrew 3D images performed by the 7800.
