  1. Not news out of E3, but over in Japan, Retro-Bit's distributor, JNNEX (apparently pronounced "Jaynecks," according to its katakana rendering) announced on June 15th (Japan time) a Retro-Bit Generations II, due for release this summer in Japan at an open price point (i.e., no MSRP). The publishers represented this time around are a bunch of companies I've never heard of: Capcom (okay, I might have heard of them before, once or twice), Athena, Woodplace, and Coconuts Japan/Soft Vision. The press release I linked above includes a 42-title game list broken down by publisher, even indicating which games are arcade/8-bit/16-bit/handheld--but given that the original Generations had a fluctuating game list up until release and never got a true finalized list until I made one, I won't bother replicating their list here. I will note, though, that the Coconuts Japan/Soft Vision list includes a whopping 13 titles in a "Pachio-kun" series, Pachio-kun apparently being a pachinko/gambling mascot character. And, the Athena list has 3 mahjong titles; this is one weird mix of genres on this system.

Of note, it will only come with one controller this time, and the press release says they plan to release separately sold "Genestick" (name not final) controllers, also at an open price point. Of even more note, the last sentence in the press release says they have plans for a third and a fourth entry in the Retro-Bit Generations series. Because sure, why not, you know?

So, anyone hyped to import this? I imagine this is a must-buy for the Pachio-kun superfan.

P.S. Varth is in their list. No mention of whether they plan on having it rotated 90 degrees again.

I got a sample of the V2 model; VArth works vertical now.

  2. Heh, "besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?"

The emulator is the main thing. People crap all over the Sega Genesis reproductions because of the bad sound, despite it being loaded with Sonic the Hedgehog.

They have fixed everything or mostly everything. the revision I played will play snes at correct speeds, and genesis works very well. I didn't noticed any missing or weird music on NES, and GBs didn't have much of a problem.

But I've been told they are moving in another direction in terms of content. They won't even support those platforms it seems. So I think I can do a couple of good PnPs my self with new/other content.

But I want to start hardware based with HDMI upscaler (kind of like the new Retron)

  3. The only problem I saw with the Generations (besides the emulator) is that it had no face mascot. Megaman, Ryu, Ken, Bison, Someone! It had Son Son, the Ghouls N Goblins guy and Captain Commando.

And to appeal the mass market is going to be difficult with those faces.

I think one key aspect has to be a popular and familiar face; even Bubsy would do it as it is a known character.

  4. Overlooked games, and a lot of them, in an enclosure that is easy to use, at a price competitive with emulation. Expandable storage.

It's getting harder and harder to impress this old timer, and plug and plays bring diminishing returns.

Can you give more detail on what do you mean price competitive with emulation? Expandable storage you mean SD or cart slot?

  5. So, I have been wondering what gives value to a plug and play? What are the features or games that would make go "This is a nice deal for 50 bucks; Let me recommend it to my neighbor for his kids"

Both as a hardcore retro gamer and general consumer. What do you think would be the features that have been overlooked by Retrobit, Atgames and Nintendo for their plug and plays?

  6.

It's odd to think Sega would have let their old arcade game go like this. They've included the arcade Zaxxon in several Sega Genesis compilations as a bonus stage, and they released a mobile game called Zaxxon Escape a few years ago. Maybe it's just the ColecoVision version they don't care about?

Remember Atgames have close relationship with Sega, so may be they got it from them.

IIRC, Retro-Bit does not have any official presence at E3, but like a lot of companies that don't, they have a strategic announcement planned for the week.

They will be at E3 on Indicade booth though, I sent two of my games they wanted to display there. Pj Gumball Hero and Iron Commando.

  8. Just to "mind your business" how do you go about when purchasing those rights?

In specific how do you make sure that not only the code is correctly copyrighted but also the in game music, artwork etc....

For example even if you could buy Outrun for Genesis from Sega you wouldn't be able to use the artwork for the iconic Ferrari in it as that licensing deal ended, but how would you know? Same for music, look what happened with the Jag port of Xenon II Megablast (blessed and authorized by Bitmap Brothers) .... there was no Megablast music due to licensing .... bummer.

Research and asking people that worked on the projects, if they are alive.

  9. I know for sure they have the snes timing issues fixed, which was #1 problem. Dont know when they release the new firmware to the public. Dunno about genesis frame rate. That is for generations, if they do a new one they will upgrade the processing power. But I dont know about this.

  10. The chicken scratch that AtGames would pay would probably not cover the cost of spinning up EA's IP lawyers who would grant the license.

The last time I've seen vintage EA console stuff was this small collection of SNES and Genesis games on a PSP disc. They never bothered to do a digital release in North America, so I suspect it wasn't a big seller. It was OK but unremarkable.

Most of their good PC stuff is on GOG. I wonder what the secret sauce is?

I doubt very much they own BOB lol. It is made by Gray Matter guys; but probably they thought they could use it anyways.

  11. They just meant the usual bonus games. Not homebrews in the sense that we know. The HD model will have something different, but still not homebrews.

Yeah that's what I thought, the mini games they normally include. UI is very good btw, they are stepping up their game.

  12.

It's just Good Deal Games stuff on the Atari products like in previous years. On the Atari portable, it's one of the Pac-Man homebrews instead of the original (which can of course still be played via SD card).

I'm talking about Genesis though, It says Homebrew Games on the Genesis.

  13. The Atgames hd teaser video showed a category with homebrewe games. I wonder who's they licensed or if those are their normall additional minigames they throw in.

I've been told that there may be a fix on the way to fix the snes timing issues on generations.

I guess generations should have been a holidays 2017 product instead of 2016.

  14. My Gmail purges anything more than 5 years old so this is all from memory.

The Colecovision portable was a one-off commission job for a private individual back in 2005. A long while afterwards River West Brands emailed me about it, saying it was their brand but they would authorize my use of it. (Checking my contact data (which doesn't get purged) it was Mark Thomann thanks enoofu for reminding me)

They also asked if I could email them the vector files of the Colecovision logo. At the time there was nothing usable on the web so I had re-drawn it from scratch.

That part might sound weird, but see, I used to be a graphic artist. You'd be shocked how many businesses have no logo art besides what's on their business card. And I don't mean the files used to make the card, but the ACTUAL CARD ITSELF.

River West claimed to be the new holder of the trademark so I just figured they had no access to original materials. Was happy to help. I do have the Illustrator files of what I sent them, dated 3-16-08. This is how I know the general time when River West contacted me. A good two years after I built the thing.

I seem to recall there was an agreement drafted but can't remember specifics of it. I can't find said document in my project files or my collection of printed legacy contracts. I do know that I didn't actually pay the $1 fee.

This is all I can remember. If they still have the contract maybe they could produce it.

You don't actually pay the fee? Interesting...

  15. I stumbled across this retro gaming convention called the Classic Game Fest in Austin Texas. I didn't know this existed. I'm pretty sure this has to be way better than whatever Cardildo put together. Here is a link to their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ClassicGameFest/?hc_ref=NEWSFEED&fref=nf

    The website is here: http://classicgamefest.com/

It is probably the biggest one in Texas, it is not bad but not great as it is mostly a front for the owner's stores. Like the Stores he owns has a bunch of booths. Pricing is reasonable for vendors if you reserve with time. I skipped last year because they made some demeaning public statements towards another really good convention in Oklahoma (bitcon) But it seems like they have changed their marketing strategy since then. Over all, it is well organized.
