  5. If you are an early adopter of technology, you risk getting stuck with an Edsel or Betamax and you always get screwed by paying way too much for the privilege of taking a chance.

True,  but you balance Risk-Reward scenarios, just like in other aspects of life.  It will vary by individual,  but many times the risk is worth the reward;  Example,   PlayStation 2!   Everybody wanted one on Launch Day,  Very few available.  We had no idea how reliable they would be or not be,  But being a Sony fan,  I'm glad I took the risk!  The one I bought on Launch Day still works like a dream and I had the privilege of being an early adopter  :)

I'm usually a "laggard." That's seriously the real term marketers use. But it's nice stepping outside of the hype zone.

  6. Gazoo, you've been gone for a while now, but your presence is still felt.  I'm so glad much of what you were and the things you've done for us all live on here.

(And to those who would say "but social media is just a tool!" ... I would disagree.  McLuhan said that "the medium is the message," by which he meant--among other things--that the real impact of a medium is what you have to become in order to use or consume it.  Social media is not a neutral tool; using it changes you.)

Had a civil political conversation on Facebook a month back.   I started it by saying "Curious... w/out comparisons to other candidates & respectful to all posting: What Presidential candidates do you like and why?"    With that in place, we had a great discussion from those voting Republican, Democrat, and Libertarian.   People were astonished.

  13. Emulation has it's uses but the real thing is best because you do not have to continually upgrade to new versions or tweak settings.

    1. ClassicGMR

      ClassicGMR

That's why I like loader solutions. 1 console, 1 cart, all the games. PS1 with PSIO. Dreamcast with GDEmu. Everdrive carts.... all great solutions.

    2. John Stamos Mullet

      John Stamos Mullet

You don't really need to continually upgrade though. Unless there is a new feature in the emulator you want, or a new game supported that you like that wasn't supported before - the constant stream of updates are mostly unnecessary. The vast majority of Arcade games have been accurately emulated for over a decade now. the last few years worth of MAME updates are adding nothing but bloat to support obscure Japanese Casino Video Slots, and not actual arcade video games. Same with most Consoles. Except for the newest systems, pretty much every classic console has been 100% emulated for years, and the newer emulator updates aren't adding games or consoles. Just extra features you probably don't need.

The version of MAME running in my Arcade1up cabinet is from 2003.

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

With emulation updates there's always something new and interesting. Even new host features which add richness and convenience to your classic experience. In some cases these eliminate tedium and headaches. And they just plain allow you to have more fun!

  14. You say you want my stuff, "on the cloud"?  You say you want to charge me monthly for "my own stuff"?  Well, I say, "Stick it!".  What's mine, stays mine, and on my machines.  You can try to make money off of me some other way.

I don't usually have much to back up on my computer, so all the files I want to keep backed up are on a couple USB thumb drives. Simple, hard to hack (when they aren't in the computer) and I get a very good return on the money spent on them.

Yeah, if they are not attached it does not get more secure than that.  I use a USB hub with push button switches to turn things on and off like external memory devices, web camera and a couple of other items.

Yeah, it's probably why I usually don't pay too close attention to people's WIP's. Too many projects left unfinished, be it books, games, whatever. And then there's preorders that take forever or worse - never see the light of day and you wonder if you'll even get your money back.

Water - One of the most plentiful things on the planet, you can quite literally get it for free.

However, some people still pay more for it than the equivalent amount in gasoline on a daily basis.

My step-grandparents had a hand operated water pump in the back yard. That was literally free water (after putting in the hand pump, of course). I vaguely remember using different ones a few times in the 70's.

  19. I'd like to personally thank all the hoarders of the more rare classic computer items.  Because they drove the prices up to insane levels, it encouraged others to develop and build modern replacements with more capabilities at much lower prices.

So, feel free to hold on to those older failing cards now, many of us no longer require them.

    1. Keatah

They've made getting anything a pain in the butt. Not like I'm looking for much anymore, but there were a few small items I still wanted. Oh well, greed has to ruin everything.

@John Stamos Mullet Actually, it was at E3 with reference to the Xbox One launch and was about, as I said, used games, not operating systems or utilities, which used to come on physical media, as well  So, next thing will be requiring non-transferable licenses for all games.

    3. John Stamos Mullet

      John Stamos Mullet

Yes. Would that be so terrible? Secondary markets in most industries range from frowned upon, to outright illegal. Not really sure how this is any different, either the exception that places like Funcoland and GameStop exploited the industry by creating a grey market they were never really entitled to. Again, it's all about licensing. They're not selling a physical product, they are selling a license to install and use their proprietary game code. Most other license types are non-trasferable.

@John Stamos Mullet Yes it would be so terrible.
