  1. I was asked a real STUPID(my opinion) TI-99/4A related question today.  The question was, "Can the TI be interfaced with a spare CD/DVD device to read and store programs or watch movies?"

The first things that instantly popped into my head were...

    1) WHY would anyone want to watch movies on the TI at a drastically reduced resolution and a degraded image?

    2) The TI cannot process fast enough in "real time" to pull it off.

    3) Why would anyone want to store programs on a CD-RW when we have fast, cheap and much larger SD cards to play with?

The drivers alone needed just to store and retrieve programs seem like they would be a nightmare, I figured it would require new hardware as well.

I immediately answered, "No" and I should have ended it at that, but then I added, "Why would you even want to try?"  His reply was, "Well you seem to hook everything else up to that old obsolete pile of junk".  Sigh... sometimes senior citizens drive me NUTS!

That is the last time I'll ever demo Dragon's Lair to anyone!  Sorry @Tursi!

It's got 4 dedicated GPIO for doing your selects, that could be decoded to 16. Most of the UberGROM devices use the entire "slot" of memory (6k) for device access so that you don't have to reset the GROM address every read or write - speeds things up a bit.

So the UberGROM really could easily track temperature, humidity and barometric levels (with supporting circuitry and components).  +1

    But it's $59 I can't handle that.

I think that's me though, I find everything expensive.

You know, I was pondering what you said there, and I realized it's not really that bad.  I'll use 1977 as an example, only because that was my peak P-Box building year...

But this is for the whole kit with reusable stuff like Arduino or RPi frames, mounting brackets, on a much improved and larger build platform.

Now say for a second you wanted to permanently use one of these tops for a project...

Now if you simply wanted to make an "official sized" recreation of a kit, you could order the small sized one in red...

I think that puts it into perspective a little bit better.

My kit should arrive in a couple of weeks, so I'll be posting a video on it shortly thereafter, so I'll address the hole spacing and other stuff as well.

Scratch that!  It's currently set to arrive on the 27th... MY DAY OFF!  Yessssssss, so the video might be done and posted by the 28th! 🤞

I like it a lot, the more I look at it.

Agreed!  One of the draws for me is that the entire project can mounted on it at one time and easily moved for storage when not actively being used.  It's also good looking enough to keep a completed project on for display.

HA! Well, it's still cheaper than some people are selling those old Radio Shack P-Box kits for on Ebait.  That $59.00 is for the starter kit, you don't have to buy that kit with all the pieces.  In fact he also sells a smaller one more reminiscent of the original P-Box << HERE >>

  7. From a strictly nostalgia point of view you can relive your youth by making some of those old projects.  It's larger than those old P-Box kits though and looks a heck of a lot better too, but there are quite literally hundreds of projects a person could make with this thing, in fact there are people who download the PDF's of the old P-Box manuals and make some of those same old projects.  For instance << HERE >>.

One thing, what is the hole spacing on this P-Box? How do you put an IC on it?

The board itself lends itself quite nicely to point to point soldering of discrete components as well as switches, knobs etc., and has mounting hardware to support RPi's, Arduinos, protoboards, small LCD monitors and the like.

I think it's a holder, and it can hold test boards??

Yes.  It even has mounting holes on the back for assorted power inputs.

  9. Most of my electronics activity was mid 70's to mid 80's before computers took me away.  So I'm more of a point to point to point soldering kind of guy, with very little breadboarding experience.  I like this thing because it supports entry level construction techniques as well as being a supporting platform for more in-depth and modern projects and even hybrid designs.  The fact that it can match the TI is another plus.

You can check it out << HERE >>

Gotta blaze for now, I have to run to the store.

Yeah, I'm not versed in it either.

Either...damn that sucks. Gees, well, your pico only understands snake.

Yeah, but we are surrounded by geniuses here on AA.  If someone wanted to design code for a project, I'm sure we would suck it up like we have everything else.

  11. I'm short of ideas at the moment, but it occurs to me, one practical or useful project could be a board that plugs into the UberGROM with a temperature sensor or possibly even with a barometric and humidity sensor that works with a program on the 49F040.  It could all fit inside of a special 3D printed case.  I bet many of you have some old tech like this hanging on your wall at home.  It might be kinda of neat to have the TI do it!  I bet it could be done on a spare bare bones TI you have hanging around the house.

  12. Over the years there have been some electronic projects developed for the TI-99/4A.  Some of these projects are massive in scale, like the TIPI, so beyond the capabilities of most here.  Then there have been some simple projects, like Vorticon's model rocket launcher for the TI.

I'd like this thread to become a combination repository for projects, and a place to hookup, discuss and even make some electronic projects that can interface with the TI in "ONE WAY OR ANOTHER".   And in the hope of more active participation, I'm asking the electronics engineers here to "please dumb it down a little" so others not at your level, or just starting out can feel free to get their hands dirty, learn and build along with us.

So, to hopefully get the ball started, does anyone have an idea for a low to moderately priced project?
