S-video to composite adapters are only $1.50/shipped if you ever needed to go back. Having s-video available will vastly increase your picture quality if you get a scaler, high-end CRT, or AVR that accepts it.
-
Yes, more details on Wednesday.
-
I would suggesting going with s-video instead of composite. I have both on my system and s-video is light years clearer. Composite is a nice step up from RF, but it's still blurry and suffers from ghosting. I'm with Classic Mac, Food Fight is where it's at. You're going to love the 7800 Galaga. I would probably put Joust and Centipede at the top of your list too.

Great, thanks! I sent you a PM to set up the transaction.

Thanks for the response Yes, I'm keeping that list current (I took off a bunch last week after finding them locally for $1/each at a game shop) and am still interested in finding the games listed in the thread at low prices. Please shoot me what you have and your prices. I appreciate any help tracking them down!

S-Video Modded 7800 Project: With Pictures
Smoke Monster replied to Smoke Monster's topic in Atari 7800
I ended up removing the RF box and replacing it with a hefty on/off switch for the TIA-9 line. The switch is overkill of course, but it's what I had on hand. -
I'll definitely be picking one of these up when it's released. What a great time it is to get in to the 7800

This list and the links are incredibly helpful. Thanks Trebor! If anyone has all of them, I'd love to have one zip file with everything.

Disabling the RF box without removing it
Smoke Monster replied to Smoke Monster's topic in Atari 7800
Thanks Shawn. I just disabled it. -
Can the RF box be disabled by cutting the four pins that connect to its PCB? I'd like to disable RF without physically removing it.

Awesome product! This definitely looks easier to install than other methods. Is the s-video quality the same?

S-Video Modded 7800 Project: With Pictures
Smoke Monster replied to Smoke Monster's topic in Atari 7800
I doubt you'll have any problems I have a list of further plans for the 7800 as soon as some parts arrive. I'm going to replace the internal video wiring with 75ohm video cable, remove the RF box and add a TIA-9 switch in its place. -
S-Video Modded 7800 Project: With Pictures
Smoke Monster replied to Smoke Monster's topic in Atari 7800
That video makes me feel so much better! Sometimes it's refreshing to see a pro struggling with things too. I ran in to a problem after installing the mod initially and Joe (AKA longhornengineer) offered to look at my 7800's motherboard. He was able to fix it, which was a godsend because I must have spent an hour installing the board and four or five trying to diagnose the problem. I don't think Gametech should write off all 7800s because of his nightmare experience though. From what I could tell, it's built like a tank and really easy to work on. I tried using the included connector but failed, so you must have more skills and/or patience than I do. Even after I trimmed the included s-video jack to fit, it seemed like the plastic was too thick to screw on the big nut that keeps it in place. -
Awesome, thanks for the lead. I PMed him. It is probably out of my price range, but who knows.

I knocked another project off the list today by finishing up my 7800 s-video mod. I also recapped it and added RCA AV jacks. I bought longhornengineer's video board on eBay and highly, highly recommend buying from them. The s-video quality is absolutely superb. It's crisp and colorful, and still glows with that original warmth. The 7800 went from being the absolute worst video quality of any console I own, to nearly the top of the list. So far I've only been able to test it plugged straight to my TV, and it will improve when I'm able to run it through my Extron DVS-204 to a T-SLG. The mono audio is also excellent, but the composite video is nowhere near as good as s-video. Both are a huge improvement over RF obviously. I mounted the AV jacks on the back of the console, which is something I hadn't seen done before. If you go this route, make sure to get the exact s-video jack that I used. There isn't enough space inside that area for standard s-video jacks.

The brushed aluminum on my 7800's case is pretty scratched up and I'd like to restore it. Please PM me if you have the upper shell of a 7800 with the metal in good condition

It looks like my original pictures at postimg went down. These should stay up: As stated above, this design contains elements of Stone Age Gamer's IP (the center Super Everdrive Logo) and is not for sale or redistribution. I didn't realize that the center logo was theirs or I would have made this explicit from the start, and I can no longer make edits to the first post.
-
This is a personal use label that I designed and is not for sale. pboland has no connection to the design of it, nor will he be offering these for sale. His service is simply a label printing service. I actually grabbed the center logo from the Super Everdrive manual, and was under the impression that it was the official logo. Do you have a link to your own label printing service SAG?
-
I saw a thread about pboland's label printing service, and comissioned a few for him to print. He responded and asked if I would test out two new label materials that he wants to offer, and to give my feedback about their quality and comparisons to stock labels. I made some templates for a few damaged SNES carts that I wanted to replace, along with a design for a Super Everdrive label. I ended up testing his original print material, a new paper based material, and an extremely high quality polyester label that isn't even paper based. They're printed directly on to the polyester and are really spectacular, although they will cost a premium. I would highly recommend the polyester labels for projects like Everdrives, where you're going to be seeing the label a lot and want something special. I'm not sure if he wants his email posted publicly, so to place an order you can PM him. In short all three materials were spectacular. I chose to apply his new paper based label on my Super Everdrive, and the new polyester labels on my two games. I'll eventually be painting a cartridge gold and want to save the premo polyester S-ED label for that. I also had him print an Everdrive-MD cart, and will post my results after I find a mint Genesis cart for it. He also offers to die-cut the labels for a small fee. His die is exactly the same size as a stock SNES label, and the result is better than what I could pull off using an exacto knife. In short, both of his paper type labels are of nearly identical quality to a new Super Nintendo cart label. The polyester based labels look and feel like they're higher quality than what Nintendo used themselves. But don't take my word for it: Also, my artwork for the Super Everdrive and SD-Card labels are here.(Artwork/template links removed by request of Stone Age Gamer) And here are the Super Ghouls N' Ghosts and Super Mario Kart labels/templates. I left subtle differences between them and the real labels, so they can be identified as reproductions. They aren't exact replicas!

Nice work Dracon, and thanks for the writeup. How does the quality of the s-video output from your mod compare to scart RGB output?
