    PAL Boing!

Does anyone know how rare the PAL version of First Star's Boing! is? I ordered Boing!directly from First Star and they sent me the PAL version by mistake and I never bothered to change it. Now I need a NTSC version of the game! Leonard Herman ABC To The VCS

  3. Yes, a game called Snowplow. here's a description of it from my ABC To The VCS: In Snowplow (Sunrise) you operate a snowplow which must clear the eight horizontal rows of snow. Snow is cleared by merely moving your plow through it. Somewhere in each row you'll uncover a car which will then move across the row that it is in and must be avoided at the risk of losing a turn. When all the snow has been cleared, one of the six cars will flash on and off and you must get to it before time runs out while still avoiding the other cars. When the car has been reached, another car will begin to flash. After all six cars have been retrieved, you'll move on to a harder screen where you must again clear the snow.

    VERY MAD

Marc mentioned to me at the show that he was curious how long it would take the Combat Two carts to get on Ebay. However he said only a few people bought multiple copies of the cart. He also told me that he had several left so it might be possible to buy them directly from him. Leonard Herman
  5. Sunrise showed off Glacier Patrol at the Winter CES 1984. The game was completed, and therefore may exist, although I haven't seen one. Leonard Herman
  6. Both Meltdown and Fall Guy were shown at CES (probably 1983). Here are their descriptions from my book ABC To The VCS: In Meltdown (Fox), you must cool down the radioactive atoms in order to avoid the dreaded meltdown. In this game the screen displays sixteen atoms in a 4x4 grid. You control both a horizontally moving cursor (X) at the top of the screen and a vertically moving cursor (Y) at the right border of the screen. The object of the game is to cool down radioactive atoms is they go wild. If you allow them to be wild for too long, meltdown will occur. You can cool down a radioactive atom by placing your X cursor over the vertical row in which the wild atom appears and the Y cursor alongside the atom's horizontal row. When this is accomplished, press the red controller button and the atom will begin to cool down. Unfortunately, no sooner can you bring one atom under control then a second atom will begin to turn radioactive. You must quickly change the coordinates of your X and Y cursors in order to cool down the second atom. Eventually a number of atoms will turn radioactive and you must jump from atom to atom in an effort to cool all of them down as much as possible in order to avoid a meltdown, which will occur if you stay away from a radioactive atom for too long a time. The game, in a manner of speaking, is similar to Dishaster **************************************** In The Fall Guy (Fox), you must get to the top of the skyscraper to obtain an important suitcase. As in Crazy Climber you must avoid flying creatures and falling objects as both will knock you off your feet and send you to the ground where you'll lose a turn. Leonard Herman

  9. To say that if Ralph Baer didn't invent videogames, someone else would is true. However if Edison didn't the light bulb, someone else would have. If Bell didn't invent the telephone, someone else would have. Give the man his due!! In 1949, when he was hired by Loral he was told to build a television set form scratch. He wanted to add a game but his managers weren't interested. This is completely ridiculous to say that he made this up just so he could 'better' Willy Higinbotham. And to say that Baer contributed very little afterwards is also ridiculous. The man has over 150 patents in his name. He was working with random access storage on videodisks long before CD-ROMs were available. He invented the technology used to take a digital photo of someone and insert it into a game (that technology was used in the arcade game Journey). And he had nothing to do with the O2. He also told me the story about his brother-in-law seeing a demonstration of a videogame back in the late 40's/early 50's but he truly doesn't remember this. He did not make this up just so he could better Higinbotham. He couldn't care less about Higinbotham. And he'll be the first to admit that Nolan Bushnell was the father of the videogame INDUSTRY. But let's call a spade a spade. If Bushnell had not attended that Odyssey demo and got the idea for Pong, you have to wonder how the industry might have evolved.
